Remembrance Sunday Debate
Noticed a few comments on social media about the 12pm kick off for the Derby game on Sunday 13th November ...
The local British Legion aren't happy about it being so near to the traditional 11am time of Remembrance, any thoughts ?

I do see their point, drunk, loud football fans in the town centre as well when ex veterans will be wanting to go to pay their respects at the memorial. I doubt it was ever even raisedClarets4me wrote: ↑Mon Sep 26, 2022 1:37 pmNoticed a few comments on social media about the 12pm kick off for the Derby game on Sunday 13th November ...

Re: Remembrance Sunday Debate
According to Labour Councillor Sue Graham, both Clubs asked Sky to reconsider, she goes on to say ..
" The Council and the Police are now faced with how to manage the annual service in ways which make it safe for the veterans, clergy, uniformed services and families to attend the service safely. "
She seems to think Football fans will be rampaging through Burnley, attacking Vicars and old soldiers wearing their medals !

Discussed this with mates over a curry at the weekend. One suggested 'surely they'll have to move the rememberance service'.
Bad planning by the police/football clubs, you can't really ask them to cancel the service in town even if there is another at Towneley Hall.

Can you pay your respects anywhere else, or just up Towneley/Town centre?AGENT_CLARET wrote: ↑Mon Sep 26, 2022 2:47 pmRemembrance day is Friday the 11th at 11am

Re: Remembrance Sunday Debate
One o'clock kick off would solve the issue. A Remberance service would be over and time to make way to football.

It wouldn't make one bit of difference, both sets of nutters who want trouble will be in town drinking from early door's weather it was 11, 12, 1 or 2 ko

Re: Remembrance Sunday Debate
I don’t think some of the lowlife of both clubs have any idea at all, just what sacrifice has been made in past conflicts. Will they respect those who traditionally remember these sacrifices on rage eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month? Or on the nearest Sunday to that? No they won’t. Very poor scheduling by Sky.

So what day? If it was Saturday the club would do the minute silence, where on earth could they move the game to?Guitargeorge wrote: ↑Mon Sep 26, 2022 5:45 pmI don’t think some of the lowlife of both clubs have any idea at all, just what sacrifice has been made in past conflicts. No, it doesn’t. And nor should it. And the RBL isn’t asking for the world to stop on its behalf.
Remembrance Sunday should be carved in stone, and every kid in the country should be made aware of just how important it is to remember those who gave EVERYTHING for us.
Rearranging this game to this day and this time is weapons grade ignorance. It should have been left where it was and managed accordingly. There should be NO games on Remembrance Sunday. It should be protected.

A minute silence, and trumpet on the game will reach more kids than the 100 or so that attended services in Burnley at 11am.bobinho wrote: ↑Mon Sep 26, 2022 6:27 pmNo, it doesn’t. And nor should it. And the RBL isn’t asking for the world to stop on its behalf.

Remembrance Day, is a day where 2 minutes silence is upheld.
Remembrance Sunday is the day of a memorial service, for all who gave their lives during tough times. Where families and friends come together to remember the times they had with people who paid the ultimate sacrifice, also to remember those who went before us in previous conflicts.
If you are trying to imply that 11/11 @ 1100, will suffice, you are sadly wrong.

A two-minute silence is held at 11am on November 11, which marks the day the armistice was signed between the Allies and Germany that brought the end of WW1.
It was a tradition first started by King George V in 1919, and initially called Armistice Day.
The armistice took place on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918, which is why the UK holds two minutes of silence at 11am every November 11.
However, after the outbreak of WW2, many countries changed the name of this day, with some members of the Commonwealth choosing to call it Remembrance Day. In the UK, it is now known as both
In the UK, Remembrance Sunday is held on the Sunday nearest to Armistice Day and marked by ceremonies at war memorial across the country.
A National Service of Remembrance, which is attended by members of the Royal Family, the Government and representatives from the armed forces, is held at 11am at The Cenotaph in Whitehall.
The Royal Marine buglers signal the start of the silence by playing The Last Post and The Rouse, and it is ended by a gun salute by the Royal Horse Artillery.
It more than suffices if you want to pay your respect and it's far bigger than the "where 2 minutes silence is upheld" you quoted.

My post was aimed at backing/understanding those who consider Remembrance Sunday to be one of the most important dates in the whole yearly calendar.

Re: Remembrance Sunday Debate
We absolutely should remember those who have served and made the ultimate sacrifice.
What I don't like is the subtle imposition that if you don't take a full day remembering those people that you are somewhow disrespectful.
Life goes on, football happens. Pubs open, shops open- can't blame either club, or even Sky for wanting the game at that time.

Re: Remembrance Sunday Debate
Only it isn't. It kicks off earlier than that so that the service gets to the silence parts at 11.00. I sang in the thing four times and well remember Douglas guest sweating with his watch to make sure that we reached the silence just before big Ben struck.AGENT_CLARET wrote: ↑Mon Sep 26, 2022 6:54 pm
