Cardiff info

Post by Leisure » Mon Sep 26, 2022 3:29 pm

Apparently there's a big rally/march on Saturday with 5000-10,000 people expected, and that getting from the centre to the ground or even finding a pub to drink in may be hard work.

Used to live in Cardiff. Lovely place, lots of pubs in the town centre, you shouldn't have a problem. Few more crafty pubs like Brew Monster, Tiny Rebel and there's a Head of Steam. Another is a spoons called The Prince of Wales which is massive. Contrary to a lot of belief on here, Cardiff folk are amazing and v welcoming, never had a problem and many close friends are still there. Not many pubs near ground mind so prepare for a 15/20 mins walk/5 min taxi from town.

Pontcanna Inn and The Cricketers are good as well if you want to venture that way and the Mochyn Du down by Sophia Gardens is a Brewhouse as well if you want to get slightly out of the centre, which might be a better bet.

I live in Cardiff and will be heading to Canton and Pontcanna after the game. It’s about 15 mins walk and there is a cheap car park here

Gray Street Pay and Display Car Park
Cardiff CF11 9NJ

The first two hours are free.

Close to the river but not on it. The ones mentioned on Cathedral Rd and Sophia Gardens are close to the river An alternative is Cardiff Bay (Mermaid Quay) which is in Cardiff Bay obviously and easy to get to.

Is this easy enough to get away from after the game?

Yep, should be, nice name btw. mega coincidence. Whereabouts are you in Cheshire?

If you head out the route past Llandaff Fields (Pontcanna) you'll get onto the A road out fairly quick, otherwise it's through the centre which is a pain in the behind. Make sure you go on the road past The Cricketers and Pontcanna Inn as the smaller road gets busy through Canton and has numerous traffic lights.

Mochyn Du is your best bet for riverside pubs and if you want a rogue shout there's also the Robin Hood which is a weird looking pub on the end of a residential street, probably 15 mins walk as well, decent coffee shop called Brod next door as well, highly recommend for a coffee/pastry pit stop!

:D up there with the roughest away days I’ve been to was the old ground, that walk out of the ground to the coaches wasn’t for the faint hearted, you just tensed your jaw and waited for the sidewinder

Hahaha! It's hard to be intimidating these days when your stadium is next to a Costco! Saying that, plenty of places to eat down the retail park if you want something quick. Massive Asda, Costa, Maccies, Harvester pub, Greggs, the usual.

Great city, crap retail park stadium. Saw us play in that minging 2-1 a few years ago, arguably one of the most horrible wins I've ever watched. Tin foil kit included.

Always enjoyed the "old school" atmosphere at Ninian Park though. Much better than yet another soulless Lego ground.

Never understood why they held the away fans back , giving time for the home fans to fill the car park which was opposite the away end

Everywhere will be busy but you can leave at the car park exit, turn immediately right up the back street, left, then right. That’s the easiest way out. Then it’s just head for Western Avenue (dual carriageway) all the way out to the M4. Plenty of places to eat near the car park if you want to avoid the traffic

Has anybody any further info on parking? May try the pay and display mentioned, and also looking for a pub that’ll be showing the North London Derby if anyone has any recommendations?

I remember my first trip to Ninian Park. I asked one of fine gentleman of the Welsh constabulary where was safe to park, and his reply was 'England'.

That set the tone for what you might call an interesting day, to misquote Pratchett's vernacular.

Blimey two Cheshire Clarets! I guess I make three. Which one of you came down to Chelski with me for the League Cup game all those years ago?

A trip to the old stadium a few years ago and made that ace walk across the road to our coaches crossing through Cardiff fans taking the opportunity for cheap shots as they passed to regroup further down the road ready to Chuck bricks……. Why don’t you do something about them was the cry to the local constabulary…….f’off back to England was the response.

Ahhhh them we’re the days! Thank God is not like that these days!! Enjoy travelling clarets!!!
