James to Collins and Fletcher, Dobo and Casper
You've probably all seen it before, but it was absolute goose bumps for me.

Re: James to Collins and Fletcher, Dobo and Casper
A trip down memory lane for me. I was trying to pick myself out on the Longside that day but I was a bit further back from the camera angle. I was standing next to "Woodleyclaret" that day I recall. "Great result eh Neil?"

Thank goodness for slow motion replays, Fletcher's and Casper's goals in real time were just a blur.
What a team Adamson was building back then.

I knew this was the Villa game before I even clicked on the link.

Didn't we play them in a cup match round about that time (maybe a year or so later)? and beat them 4-1 again? I remember them trying to kick Taffy off the park.

Yes we played them at Turf in the 1974 FA Cup 5th round and won 1-0 with an early headed goal from Paul Fletcher at the CF End. Happy days.

In the season 72-73, we also won at Villa 3-0.
Villa finished third that season but us and QPR were the two outstanding teams.

Must have been the 4-1 game above I was thinking about then. Thought it was a cup game though. I was only 9 at the time in my defence. Remember sitting in the Bob Lord?? Can't think why we would have done?

Fao Capt John it really was but the good times are coming back, top by Christmas then pulling clear to win the league by a mile. Hopefully the clowns at the EFL will actually have the trophy at the game not like the balls up at Charlton.

Couldn't hear it on the highlights, but this was the first game I can remember singing 'No Nay Never' on the Longside.

Pure and simply that was just the perfectly balanced side.....not a weak link.....destined to become Champions, and what a superb performance that was against Villa.
Re: James to Collins and Fletcher, Dobo and Casper
I was devastated when Thomas was sold shortly after this match… However if anything the balance improved as Geoff Nulty added some steel to an abundently skillful side.

It's amazing how fortune has fluctuated for us over a relatively short period of time. Ten years prior to this in '62/'63 we kicked off in the First Division with arguably our greatest ever side and then ten years later in '82/'83 we were relegated from Division Two and the start of the big slide.

All those collars and ties on show. Those were the days, I think that was the game I went to on my Honda50 and came off on the way home in Nelson, after hitting some road works. Worth it though

I've already booked to take my Dad to the Brum match on Boxing day. It's his birthday and he'll be 98

There's a man who could head a ball. Not the height that Fletcher could attain, but awesome power.
Re: James to Collins and Fletcher, Dobo and Casper
Has Fletcher actually landed from jumping at his most recent corner yet?

Re: James to Collins and Fletcher, Dobo and Casper
Semi-final defeats are tough to take, and those in 1974 and 1961 x 2 (FA Cup and League Cup in the same season) were very difficult to accept. But, from memory, the worst journey home was from West Brom in a League match in 1967......We lost 1-8 and the one we scored was a late consolation goal from Arthur Bellamy......a horrible feeling.
Sorry, wrong thread, should be worst defeat.

Cracking side that.
The football they played was often superb.
If we'd just kept it for another 3 or 4 years.....
