A lot of selective memories on here.

Let's not forget that when Mullen left in a way that was spun by the club, we were heading back to where he brought us up from. The relegation in 94-95 was truly embarrassing. Relatively speaking Mullen had decent money to spend, but chose to buy players like Liam Robinson, Mark Winstanley and John Gayle!

The following season we even had lan Helliwell leading the line and it was obvious we were only heading one way.
Good money to spend?

Teasdale admitted we couldn't afford to go up. The club wasn't ready for the 2nd tier at the time.

He was sacked to deflect all the hatred Teasdale was getting.

It was a step too far but I wouldn’t describe it as truly embarrassing.

From memory Robinson was £250,000 (a club record at the time), Vinnicombe was 200,000 and Winstanley was 150,000. There were others that season too.

Surely that money could have been better spent?

We also had the worst disciplinary record in football league history that season too at the time!

Look, thinking that Jimmy Mullen wasn't all that great is hardly a controversial opinion. There's a reason he's never come close to replicating what he achieved here in those first three years, either whilst he was still here or elsewhere.

We barely made the play offs, finishing 18 points behind Stockport.
We needed a new team really.

Probably 2/3 million spending to stay there. It was far too quick a progression.

Possibly, but Liam Robinson as your CF?

I believe a better manager would have kept us up, but I understand why Mullen was given the chance, given the euphoria of promotion via Wembley.

I was the first person to start the 'Mullen Out' chant at home which basically accelerated the process of him leaving, which I will never forgive myself for.

I'm glad you understand why a manager who had won two promotions in less than three years in charge, should not be sacked.

Wasn't the rumour that he went to Bristol City to sign Wayne Allison, but came back with Liam Robinson (who had scored five goals, and all of them against Peterborough?)

That wouldn't surprise me. I don't think he was sober all that often.

The story of him being found asleep on the bog at half time takes some beating!

I don’t really care what he did before or after being with us (much like any other manager) but that three year period from 91-94 was a much needed boost for the supporters and the town and for that reason he deserves a special place in the club’s history.

We were over stretched financially and that was never something the manager could control. No manager managed to do better than him until a bit more money became available with a change of chairman, but he still managed to leave us in a better state than when he arrived.

Nogan, Hoyland and Thompson cost similar amounts from memory later in the season. They were a step up from the players above but allied to Thompson's injury record, still not good enough

As a club we were in the football wilderness, Jimmy brought us back and made us believe.
I will never forget the Derby game ,my best ever away game ,talking to County fans after the game , they kept saying we did win didn't we ! . Would love him to come back and get the plaudits he deserves.

Nice try but not quite down to DA's standard. 😉

I meant every word I said and was relieved the day he was sacked.

He should have been sacked after the pre matcn interview at Luton 95 on RL when he was sluring his words, how he lasted as long as he did was a miracle and says a lot about Teasdale and our clueless board at the time.

Mullin would have taken us back to another Orient game if he had haved stayed , he really wasn't up to the job

Imo, it was a bit of both (Teasdale and Mullen) who were responsible for the good times grinding to a juddering halt. We'd been largely brilliant from the moment Casper was sacked at 4.55 after the Scarborough away match in September '91 until the amazing win at Wembley in '94. After that it went sadly very wrong. Limited funds were made available for much needed strengthening to compete around the (far higher) next level and what was made available was totally wasted unfortunately by Jimmy on Robinson and unfortunately Vinnicome, who got badly injured early doors and rarely featured in the relegation scrap. The signings of Thompson and Nogan were far, far more like what we needed, but it was all too late by then and Thompson was crocked anyway sadly. That season was a massive missed opportunity and Mullen has to take a share of the blame, but not actually all of it. And imo much as I was indebted to him and everything he'd brought us over the previous 3 years, he should have been fired when we went down. Hanging on into the following season just soured things unnecessarily I felt and he ended up leaving under something of a cloud which was wrong.

Casper resigned didn't he?

Managers didn't get sacked easily in them days, but you could probably say about most managers they should have gone earlier in hindsight.

Sang at the 1990’s speed as well. Not the super fast 2020’s versions.
Not to mention when it was sang in canon as well.

That sounded superb. 8-)

I stand corrected re Casper's exit, but I think we all knew it was almost certainly an ultimatum from Teasdale "resign and leave with a degree of honour or we'll fire you in the morning".
I definitely agree that managerial sackings in those days were far less common and that's a massive contrast to today.

You haven't answered my question.

How can being in the 4th and 3rd tier be an amazing time in our history after what we achieved before and since

An amazing time in our clubs history was 20 straight years in the old 1st Division, winning the league and getting to the quarter finals of the European cup.

6 straight seasons in the premier League and getting into Europe, another amazing achievement thanks to Sean Dyche

1980 - 2000 is a period of the clubs history that is certainly not amazing, I would have called it depressing for a football club who had previously such a fine and proud history

True that, when we won at York to clinch the title it was more disappointment that we were even in that league than sheer jubilation at getting out of it.

Jimmy Mullen made us relevant again after we came perilously close to falling out of the FL altogether.

And he certainly left with credit in the bank following his tenure, that said we probably should never have been allowed to fall that low in the first place.

But under Mullen we rapidly climbed back through the leagues, although in hindsight we weren't ready for the 2nd tier at that time, and due to poor recruitment, our stay at that level was a brief one.

However when you compare Mullen's record to Heath and Waddle who both succeeded him, he comes out pretty well in my view.

A thoroughly decent chap who faced his demons. Definitely deserves his place in our hearts, as do many. Had his ups and downs but that 4th Div championship brought a lot of people back to our club.
