Been a club legend but he's nowhere near anymore don't want this season to ruin the memory's. That being said would help if Maatson could defend a bit. This thread wouldn't exist then

Re: Ashley Barnes
It’s a tough one, isn’t it, because he wasn’t but he’s SO ineffective (winning nothing, throwing himself on the ground) that it’s like playing the last 30 minutes with 10 men.
I’m not sure that not being involved in the goal is good enough to say he had no involvement in the capitulation.

We may as well go down to 10 men as soon as he steps on the pitch these days.

Plenty of options who can stay on their feet and run with ball - and have some pace.
All important when holding onto a lead.

It's pretty obvious that all he needs is a lucky break and he'll be back to being the 20 goals a season striker he's always been.

Would rather we threw Costelloe on, at least he's mobile and would drag the centre backs around a bit.

Makes us a worse team every time he comes on. Lose any sort of control we might have. He had a fantastic opportunity to play Benson clean through but punted it way too hard straight to their keeper. Then he gets played through and he’s on the deck?

No, he needs to go out on loan.
We can pay part of his wages.
Re: Ashley Barnes
Benson....has he got a cross in him? So much good work...then stops and waits for a pass back.
Cork and Taylor excellent. So soft when we go ahead.

Re: Ashley Barnes
Barnes was poor when he came on, but he was by no means alone, however the one thing he used to be valuable for was holding up the ball and winning free kicks, now he doesn't even offer that asset.
I assume when everyone is fit he won't even feature on the bench, and why Costelloe has suddenly been frozen out of the 1st team picture is strange also.
That said if our backline did their jobs in the closing minutes we'd have bagged all 3 points.
2 clean sheets in 11 now is a worrying stat that we really do need to rectify ASAP.

He took Tella off and played Zaroury wide, so either could have gone up top, where they would be able to cause problemsJimmyRobbo wrote: ↑Sat Oct 01, 2022 5:14 pmOne not on the bench and the other 2 played/playing.

Re: Ashley Barnes
Easiest pass ever to Benson too, not even remotely difficult.
He's 1v1 at the end, the defender slips, Barnes is on the floor, just typical shite.
Re: Ashley Barnes
I'm not his biggest fan but was no worse than Jay today.
The "free kick " he gave away was never a foul, and the ref realised thst and changed it to a drop ball to them, forgetting we actually had the ball unchallenged in the corner
Barnes was no way at fault for our poor last 10 mins.
Aimless punts and a GK tied to his line were far more culpable

Re: Ashley Barnes
As much as it annoyed me that I actually felt a bit sorry for him when that happened because he’s clearly done at this level. A whole half of space to pass it into and Benson is in, but instead just makes a real mess of it. No exaggeration a bog standard amateur easily makes that pass.

Poor yet again today. His one strength in holding up the ball was what we needed to see the game out. Miles off it at this level sadly.

it's not Barnes' s fault, but he is past his best.
I blame whoever gave him a season extension on his contract.

Re: Ashley Barnes
As much as I've absolutely loved Barnes during his time at the club, for me, he doesn't make the bench anymore.
He's someone for a long direct pass to when we're trailing and we need a goal from somewhere. Well, I don't think that's going to happen enough to warrant him taking a space on the bench.

Yes, but someone must have accepted it's insertion as part of a contract negotiation

Re: Ashley Barnes
Of course a player and his agent are going to accept an option in said player's favour... But that will have been when he signed his last contract, where many on here thought he was still good enough for the PL, never mind this level.boatshed bill wrote: ↑Sat Oct 01, 2022 5:52 pmYes, but someone must have accepted it's insertion as part of a contract negotiation
I don't think I can recall a player who has gone down hill so fast.

Re: Ashley Barnes
You are right about that. Lost his pace (whatever pace he had) probably due to injury and the long period he spent out of the game.fidelcastro wrote: ↑Sat Oct 01, 2022 5:55 pmOf course a player and his agent are going to accept an option in said player's favour... I love Barnsey but it’s becoming one of those situations where a hero is lumbering in and ruining his legacy.nil_desperandum wrote: ↑Sat Oct 01, 2022 5:51 pmExactly this.
He should have been sent out on loan before the window closed.
Better to give younger players a chance.
I absolutely don’t blame Ash. It’s completely understandable that he’ll want to play and also back his abilities.
His issue is VK is playing him. Or maybe it’s ALK’s fault for not backing him with Obafemi (not that I wanted him either). I’ve yet to see him make a positive contribution in the games he’s played this season. He balloons shots over, miss places passes, falls over, etc etc.
Harsh, I know, but VK needs to stop playing him.

Is this the same Zaroury who was non-existent when he came on? The same Tella who had a nightmare running offside and conceding possession?nil_desperandum wrote: ↑Sat Oct 01, 2022 5:18 pmHe took Tella off and played Zaroury wide, so either could have gone up top, where they would be able to cause problems
They are mobile players with pace.
I'm not trying to argue that Ash is a great player. My argument is that VK is trying to keep JR available for as many games as possible and I think AB is the best option we have.

And would have offered something rather more threatening than Barnes - particularly pace, which means other teams can't push up so much.

Dont think we can blame Barnes, but why does VK persevere with him. Whats happened to Dervisoglu-he is a striker who is 22 and already scored 62 goals in the top flight including 6 for his country. We are paying Brentford £1m for currently NOT even being in the squad

Re: Ashley Barnes
Barnes didn't to any better or worse than Jayrod. Starved of service after we failed to apply forward pressure after our goal. And that was the exact purpose of VK with his substitutions. But both AZ and MB weren't at the races today and perhaps we needed to ship up shop with bringing on Beyer and moving Charlie to LB.
It's not an exact science unfortunately
