Re: Southgate
Based on his record as manager of England, presumably.
Re: Southgate
For missing that pen
Re: Southgate
Regardless of peoples opinions on him. He is the only manager to come as close as he did to winning a trophy in decades.

Re: Southgate
Put into context he had a tremendous amount of luck with easy paths.
It’s like Anthony Joshua winning a world title, fighting absolute no marks then the first decent opposition he faces he gets beaten.
He’s just not very good as a manager. But he’s very PC and says the right things to the right people, in life that usually gets you by even though people can see through it.

Re: Southgate
talking out of your arse like everyone who discredits England.
Croatia, Czechs, Germany, Denmark, swept aside. Go on lets discredit those opponents too.....
Croatia WC finalists, almost knocked out Spain in the Euros. took em right to the brink.
Czechs knocked out Holland.
Denmark were probably the most impressive side to me, pretty sure they were also ranked inside the top 7 in FIFA world rankings.

Prima donnas that cant play together
Re: Southgate
As for Anthony Joshua, suggesting the first decent fighter he ever fought was Andy Ruiz is pure unknowledgeable horseshite.
Re: Southgate
I agree, so why this big expectation on England to win tournaments? People were acting like Southgate failed at the WC for not winning it.... and the Euros too. A tournament we haven't won in history, suddenly Southgates a failure for taking us as close as we'll ever get.

Re: Southgate
It's news to me, and I'm sure to them, that Germany are 'absolute no marks'.

Id like to see someone else take the reigns though. They bore the life out of me
Sounds familiar close to home too
Re: Southgate
England have always played boring snails pace football mate, doesnt matter who the manager is. No elite manager like Pep is taking that job

Unfortunately for Southgate you don't get trophies for coming close.

Re: Southgate
We actually did a bit better in the Euros, although I'm not sure anyone could say we 'swept aside' Denmark. Or anyone else really, other than Ukraine. We ground out results and then found a way to lose the final. Fair enough, better than we usually do.
The World Cup path was ludicrously easy. Losing to Belgium twice, losing to Croatia, drawing with Colombia.. scraping past Tunisia. So results, until falling off a cliff recently, have been fine. But the football is absolutely awful, almost unwatchable.

Sounds familiar to me, which makes most people slagging off Southgates football complete hypocrites. Burnley fans whining about England's dull football and only winning 1-0 The world has goneNottsClaret wrote: ↑Tue Oct 04, 2022 1:12 pmWe actually did a bit better in the Euros, although I'm not sure anyone could say we 'swept aside' Denmark. Highest compliment you could pay Southgate as a manager is that he'd make a great assistant manager.

Re: Southgate
We haven't had a successful England manager since Sven and his 2002 and 2004 campaigns but Southgate has been a breath of fresh air both on and off the pitch. I tend to think two tournaments is about the limit for an England manager although Bobby Robson managed to do well in Italy for his third tournament finals (albeit with a lot of luck).
If anyone can get success with England then its got to be Gareth Southgate and if he doesnt go all the way I hope he at least gets us into the last 8 so he can go down as the 2nd greatest England football manager of all time.
Wont be long before he is rightly made Sir Gareth and I really hope when he departs as England manager he takes on the kind of role that allows him to continue the great work he has done with the English game on both respect and anti-racism but with the bandwidth to take it to a much wider and far reaching level.
I think everyone bar the crackpots want him to succeed and I think the whole country will be enthralled by him and his teams efforts to do the unthinkable this winter.

Re: Southgate
Southgate bores the pants off me! But in reality it doesn’t matter who you put in charge with England we will never look like Man City, and Southgate as a semi and a runner up last two tournaments which is a great achievement on paper.Although they didn’t turn up in the two games they lost imo.

Re: Southgate
Southgate has performed a decent job with England, but inducted into the Hall of Fame seems a bit OTT.
Now if he was to deliver the WC in Qatar then yes absolutely, he'll have earned his stripes,

Re: Southgate
Difficult to compare club and international football, a club manager has the luxury of being able to buy in players, whereas an international coach has to make the best of what is available to them at any given period.
However GS does have the likes of Bellingham and Foden to name just 2 who have the talent to grace this arena, and if England are to get anywhere he needs to allow them freedom to play.
Dyche was pitting himself against the riches of most of the PL and he kept us there for a good few years while spending a relative pittance in comparison to the rest of the division.

Re: Southgate
I'm still of the opinion I havent seen entertaining football from England since Sven's Euro 2004 but again, we were turfed out by a decent side.
Southgate has unquestionably on paper achieved the best progress in tournaments, however with his resources and better decisions you do have to wonder what the team were truly capable of. Certainly you couldn't see him getting a PL job, based upon his England exploits, which would most likely suggest what others think of his ability.
If he'd have gone after Croatia in 2018 when we took the lead, instead of sitting back would we have beaten them? (We'd have been decimated in the final by France anyway)
If he'd gone after Italy, instead of inviting pressure, would we have done better? Even then, his use of substitutions was (at best) mediocre.
Southgate now has the issue that not only is his team not playing well, they're also not churning out results. The media seem to have turned and now even players like James Maddison are beginning to publicly call out his policy of picking players who 'have never let England down' in favour of form players.
As for the World Cup, I've already said I think we'll eek out of the group and probably get knocked out by the Argies in the first knockout round. Would we do better with a better manager, who knows. Will we be able to attract a better manager, probably not.

I don't know about you or some of the other grumps on here but I fkn loved the Euros, it was all about getting through no matter what, 1-0 or 4-0, just dig in and get through to the next round. Socially it was brilliant, before that Euros run I was out of love with Englands national side, I was nervous as crap throughout the Euros, probably the first time iv experienced nervous excitement with the national team. That matters alot to me.tiger76 wrote: ↑Tue Oct 04, 2022 2:37 pmDifficult to compare club and international football, a club manager has the luxury of being able to buy in players, whereas an international coach has to make the best of what is available to them at any given period.

That's why ill support Southgate regardless, I dont think he's the greatest manager ever but for once in my lifetime he built an England team I felt an emotional connection with.
Sure if you went into the tournament anti Southgate and sat alone during the Euros deeply analysing how good the quality of attacking football was whilst willing him to fail to be proven right then you probablyont support him regardless and dig at him constantly. Socially and emotionally 10/10, he brought out a feeling I thought i'd never get with England.
