NHS Dentists

Post by ceborame » Fri Nov 25, 2022 10:30 am

I've just called a dentists to try to get on as a NHS patient and the receptionist told me the NHS have put a cap on all dentists accepting new NHS patients.

At the moment I don't need urgent treatment, I just want a check up and a clean.

What's all this about ? And does anybody know if this cap is expected to be lifted soon ?

Dentists don’t want NHS work, they want private patients.

Dentists can’t afford NHS patients under the current contract to the government…

Private patients pay more, so they're not taking NHS patients where possible and it's like that across the country

The main argument against a two tear NHS… the squeeze in the public purse has taken the profession from expanding its NHS service to a steep decline. It is why we are in a general strike by any other name. People seem to want fair pay, don’t know who they think they are.

I phoned the NHS helpline to try to find one and was told there wasn't one taking on patients within a 50 mile radius.

Not necessarily true,a lot of dentists, myself incuded, were happy to work with NHS contracts. The problem goes back to the badly implemented 2006 contract which can make NHS work unprofitable. It still hasn't been resolved 16 years on.

So you are kind of agreeing with BA , you don't want to do NHS work because it's not profitable ? And that's not a criticism, profit is not a swear word to me

I'm retired thankfully now, but dentists are businesses, we fund everything ourselves so if the NHS contract proves to be unprofitable, then you simply can't stay afloat.

After trying for a number of years, I've got back on with the trainee (incorrect title) dentist, I believe the dental nurse was also a trainee and I will see the hygienist in a few weeks.

Although they are relatively slow, tutor has to check every stage, the check up and two subsequent fillings have been fine. Got to start somewhere in any profession.

I heard one of the Barnoldswick dentist were also taking on NHS patients recently.

I was with the NHS dental facility at Oak Hill in Accrington. They used Covid as an excuse to pretty much shut up shop. They had struggled to recruit dentists under an NHS contract for a couple of years prior to that.
I did write to the Hyndburn (Conservative) MP but not much interest there. Id suggest everyone lay it at the door of their local elected MP, it's yet another issue where recent Governments have taken their eye off the ball.

My last NHS check up was a weird figure like £32.68 or something. I got in at the end of October, was told I need a small filling doing and to see the hygienist, and the next available appointment is 6th February.

It's fine, I'm not in any pain or anything, but it's about 20 weeks between appointments which is far longer than it used to be.

The standard NHS fee for an examination (including a scale and polish, if needed, and any x-rays needed) is currently £23.80.

Like various other bits of the NHS via 'trusts' and the like. Privatisation of the NHS was always going to be thus, too big a monster to have a 'big bang' privatisation.

Is there actually free NHS dentists anymore ? I presume I’m on NHS but always have to pay £40-100 ish etc for whatever it is they do every year . Last time they did some deep scraping of plaque and was £200 ( 2 quick visits ) and didn’t even get a handjob , which wouldn’t have been unreasonable ( imo)

From the highly respected King's Fund:

There is no evidence of widespread privatisation of NHS services. The proportion of the NHS budget spent on services delivered by the private sector has remained broadly stable over the past decade.

I'm pretty sure Dentists remained private when the NHS was formed, along with GP's, but for years the majority of their work was NHS patients.
With a change in society, they were able to find more patients willing to pay to be seen quicker and that was better money for then.

So to say it's being privatised via the back door is a bit disingenuous

Charges for dental treatment in England provided by NHS providers were introduced in 1951.

Fair enough , they should be adding costs to most NHS services IMO , with the exception of u18 and over 65’s .

It’s getting to the point where it’s cheaper to have them all whipped out for your 21st birthday and invest in a pair of false teeth

This government (and the last to a lesser degree) really have dropped the ball with this. How can dentists expect to do work at a loss? Also it probably drives up private prices as they look to make up the losses elsewhere. It’s a lose lose lose situation

Despite this being introduced by Labour, I knew someone would find a way to have a poke at the Torie's    The problem is that whichever party is in in power, the oppostition will criticise them whatever they do. There is literally zero cooperation between opposition parties in government. There are so many benefits paid out these days and high inflation which the government and councils aren't immune from that there just isn't enough money to go round. It is an ever increasing spiral which will only get worse. Immigration alone is costing the government billions but if they try and tackle it they get criticised by all the charities and do gooders. It costs money and puts even more pressure on the NHS. The NHS is under more pressure than ever with more people using it but less people paying taxes to pay for it.

I don't have the answers but I know I wouldn't be a politician for all the tea in China.

Makes me laugh people blaming Labour for the shambles in the nhs.

Even if (and they certainly did) Labour did mess about with the NHS, how many years have the Tories had to do something about it? The issues lay squarely at the party that have been in power for over a decade.

If I smashed a hole in my roof 12 years ago and then sold and moved house, who is at fault for the continuous leaks? Me for smashing the hole 12 YEARS AGO, or the clown that moved in and didn’t fix it

So, in relation to your point that corporations and the rich should pay their fair share of tax, you might not be aware that the government has increased corporation tax to 25% from April 2023 for businesses earning profits above £250k, that 1% of earners account for 25% or more of the income tax burden, and the tax burden is at its highest since the second world war.

Still plenty of tax avoidance going on

So which is worse. Mega rich who use as many means as possible to pay less tax or the scroungers who refuse to work and abuse the benefits system. One still pays something, the other pays nothing.

I'd consider it in terms of the Pareto Principle, though not 80/20 but closer to 99/1 (currently for distribution of wealth).

So, if it takes 20% (or 1% if we're talking taxing the wealthy) of your effort to rectify 80% (99% of the taxes of the wealthy) of the issue that's the right approach. Both issues require resolution, granted, but to maximise the efficiency of the solution make quick gains first right...?

I know what I'd do for the betterment of society.

I love it when a thread on dentistry turns into politics. With someone even telling the (former) dentist that they’re wrong and obviously don’t remember 2006.

Absolute classic, and a prime reason why anything political should be banned because many posters simply can’t state facts.

I was going to post very similar comments myself. Not for the first time on here have I been told that I'm wrong/made something up, by the usual suspects who refuse to acknowledge anything other than their own views.
