Re: Hilsborough semi ‘74 question
Me aged 17ish in what was the open Kopp opposite.
Due to ticket cock-ups by BFC.
Leppings Lane end looked full. Imagine 25k plus?
Load of Mags fans were in there too...but were marched down to their end.
I was too far back on the terraces to try get to the front & escape Burnley end.
Anyway, I'd been 'adopted' by a big group of Mags fans.
They were brilliant.

It was really tightly packed, as said. Remember drinking Mansfield bitter out of paper cups and cursing Maconald
for scoring.
for scoring.

I was there as a 14 year old, most disappointing result in my life after being at ER the previous week when we won
1-4 which was up there with the best

Me, also aged 16. It was absolutely rammed and tbf extremely dangerous even then, before the fences and cages which would eventually precipitate the disaster there.

I was there with my grandfather aged 11 (me not him ) . I remember being in awe at the geordies in the kop behind the goal . It was absolutely packed and one or two were suffering because of it . We were by far the better team and we'd of certainly put up a better show than they did in the final . Well done red rum .

I was there, 18 year old. We footballed Newcastle to death but could mot restrain MacDonald.
How many Burnley fans? There were a lot of Geordies but I would say (guess l) 25 thousand.

Re: Hilsborough semi ‘74 question
Possibly one of the saddest days in my footballing life. I was convinced we were going to win. Travelled directly from Sheffield to Heathrow to catch a flight out to Bombay to join a ship. Loads of Geordies on the ship who were amazed I had a programme from the game. They were bouncing I was distraught

Re: Hilsborough semi ‘74 question
I was the only driver for 4 of us coming down from Catterick. I’d thrown a sickie as I couldn’t get any of the guys to work for me. Spent a lot of the match with St. Johns ambulance not well. To totally screw up my weekend The Big Match comes on Sunday afternoon and there’s my beaming face on the opening credits. Monday morning straight in the office with my union rep. The gaffer had seen me on tv and I’d had previous warnings about sickness for Clarets games.

Re: Hilsborough semi ‘74 question
I was actually probably as squashed in the quarters on the Beehole as the semi in the Leppings Lane.
Re: Hilsborough semi ‘74 question
I was in my last year at Uni in the Midlands. I missed the Grimsby game (don't know why), hitch-hiked up the M6 and back three times to Oldham and TM ( Villa, Lincoln) and caught the train to Sheffield so as to deffo not miss the semi.
Was so upset when we lost.
Sure, worse things happen at sea/ twas only a football match but boy, after nearly 50 yrs, it still hurts.

Re: Hilsborough semi ‘74 question
I was 9. Convinced we were going to wembley, an unbelievable prize in those days. We were sat in the main stand. I walked out crying and a geordie came over and said "thats football man".
Biggest disappointment of my life.
So pleased in later life to see us win at wembley.
Once asked by a wigan fan if id swap relegation for a cup win. Said i would kill the Mrs for a cup win. She was sat next to me!

Re: Hilsborough semi ‘74 question
I was 9, sat in the big cantilever stand with my dad & grandma. Leppings Lane end was to our right and the entire ground was rammed. had never seen so many people in one place before. 0-0 at HT and remember the Grand National result coming up on the big scoreboard they had on the Kop at that time. Red Rum's second win.
The Mags were our nemesis that season as McDonald's goals took them to Wembley. Then, to rub salt into the wound, they beat us 2-1 aet in the Texaco Cup final at Sid James' Park. A tie reduced to one leg instead of the two legs throughout the competition. And finally, on the last day of the season, a late McDonald header secured a 1-1 draw, preventing us going into Europe on goal average as Stoke took our place.

I had a genius Union rep and he got me off with a hand slap. He used the fact that I regularly got lads to cover me and could have done so(even though I couldn’t) but I was ill. I was working up Stockton on a 28 man watch so 1missing wasn’t Earth shattering.

Re: Hilsborough semi ‘74 question
I was 16 as well.
About 3 -5 rows back, just to the side of the goal post.
Well crambed in and you knew it, but I'd been just as squashed a few times on the Fulwell End, especially when they played Man U. One of my mates passed out, at Sunderland, and they passed him down to pitch side like he was body surfing.

I was sat on a wall about half way up to the right of the goals. Newcastle fans made way so I could see. I wasn’t that tall, still ain’t, didn’t get much taller.

I was 20 and already living in London. So I thought I would make a weekend of it and stay in Padiham with my parents. So, decided to go to the match on one of the special trains laid on by the club. Unfortunately we were on the first train out and that meant on leaving Sheffield after the match we were on the last train back to Burnley. And of course someone kept setting off the communication chord. Not a great day in the end and I was hoping I would get back to Burnley in time to go to Blackpool Mecca. No chance!!!

Just back from the corner flag, right in the apex of that triangle shape.
Seats there today.
Back then it was raised above the terrace below.
Didn't know it was the FA that cooked up the tickets.
Re: Hilsborough semi ‘74 question
I was 19 caught the train and got there just before ko. The tunnels were just a wall of people. I settled on a place above the corner flag looking down on the leppings lane terrace. I wasn't surprised about the tragic event years later

Me too, as were quite a few others, still not sure how that happened but it wasn’t pleasant. Couldn’t leave at the end either until the geordies had come back out and celebrated. Really really odd.
Re: Hilsborough semi ‘74 question
Seem to remember the 18,000 tickets allocated figure. I was on One of four special trains from Burnley central And three of us had tickets for the Kop end with the Newcastle fans. Looking across at the Leppings Lane end I remember it looked dangerously overcrowded with fans swaying all over the place.

Re: Hilsborough semi ‘74 question
Nobody has yet mentioned that Njcassel shouldn’t even have been there. If the FA had any balls they would have thrown them out after their fan invasion changed their QF against 2nd division Forest. 1-3 down they won 4-3 but the FA made them play again at Goodison and after that they get a cup final appearance. Gutless as usual.

Re: Hilsborough semi ‘74 question
You are dead right. Their 6th round tie v Forest went to three games and Forest didn't get one game at home. Some of their players were physically attacked during the pitch invasion at St.James Park.Tricky Trevor wrote: ↑Sun Nov 27, 2022 3:32 pmNobody has yet mentioned that Njcassel shouldn’t even have been there. I never will. They beat us in the cup, beat us in the Anglo-Scottish cup final(which should have been over 2legs but ended up one at St. James and they needed ET to beat us) and to cap it all they got a draw ont’Turf last match of the season that cost us European football. Effing McDonald scored in them all I believe, you can’t beat pace.

Re: Hilsborough semi ‘74 question
I was desperately, desperately disappointed and have never really got over the feeling I had at the end, largely because I never, ever thought we'd lose it. Consequently I've never, ever thought any Burnley game was a foregone conclusion since! I was so peed off I always thought we'd played really poorly, but with hindsight if you watch the highlights we actually had numerous more than decent chances, but couldn't put the ball in the net. The difference on the day was bloody the two Macs. Bloody Mcdonald and bloody McFaul who both had blinders. Mcdonald got his cumuppence in the final where he never touched the ball and Newcastle were trounced. And as for the ridiculous treatment of Forest in the 6th round and what the Geordies had got away with there, don't get me started!

Exactly, we were comfortably the better team. I felt sick for ages after - and how bad they were was highlighted in tne drubbing by Liverpool in the final. It did lead to that brilliant comment immediately afterwards I think by MacDonald of “ we know where we went wrong? Can we do it again”!

I had the exact same experience and effects - I was very young but absolutely convinced we were going to Wembley. Like you it has affected how I look at every big game since. Btw I was in the stand above the terrace at The Lepping end and my older brother was in the paddock - he also said it was frightening.Dark Cloud wrote: ↑Sun Nov 27, 2022 8:25 pmI was desperately, desperately disappointed and have never really got over the feeling I had at the end, largely because I never, ever thought we'd lose it. Re: Hilsborough semi ‘74 question
I remember all the above but I think we should take off our rose tinted specs with regard to our support. Unless I’m very much mistaken we were a bit of a laughing stock because we were I believe the first team to ever return tickets unsold for an FA Cup semi. Think we got 22k and sold 18k. I remember standing in the Leppings Lane end just before kick off and thinking bloody hell they have three quarters of the ground. A sea of black and white. We did of course play them off the park and even scousers said we would have given them a better game in the final but support wise it was a bit embarrassing.

Re: Hilsborough semi ‘74 question
At the time I was really annoyed with Frank Casper who declared himself fit when very few people thought he would be fit after suffering a bad knee injury. It might have been as recently as the previous game but I’m not sure about that. I wanted Ray Hankin to play as he had been playing well which makes me unsure as to when Frank was initially injured, but as a senior pro he was going to be selected if he declared himself fit. I still think that a fit Ray Hankin would have made all the difference.
