In amongst the football a bit of cricket.
Early start and England currently 126-0

158-0 off 23 overs. Just short of 7 an over for test cricket. Bonkers.

Crawley reaches 100. Survived an lbw review on 99.
England’s 200 is the fastest, double century, opening stand ever.

Both openers out after making tons, Pope and Root carrying on the fun however, and yes as you' might expect in Pakistan it's a batman's paradise, so clearly a good toss to win.
273-2 after only 43 overs.

Thought it was a one day game when I first looked that scoring rate is crazy for a test match

Scoring rate is bonkers, but England are going so quickly that losing the odd wicket isn't really a problem.Sheedyclaret wrote: ↑Thu Dec 01, 2022 9:56 amThought it was a one day game when I first looked that scoring rate is crazy for a test match

Superb stuff from the England batters.
Crawley should get a bit of leeway from his critics for a short while.

Ton for Pope now in 90 balls, Brook also rattling along at 1 per ball. Stokes, Jacks, Livingstone to come!
When I played I was always up for a bowl but I might've been tempted to keep a low profile in the next couple of hours

BBC website coverage just pointed out that Brook is in the running for an England fastest 100. Current rankings: Jessop from 76, Bairstow from 77, Stokes from 85.
Brook currently 90 from 68.

4 tons in the first 5 batters. That is some going, even on a wicket like this.

Brook's ton in 81 balls (I think)- 3rd fastest ever for England then. Stokes isnt going to hang about either 30 already- from 13. Beginning to regret potting SkySports now but I guess highlights will be elsewhere later.

Geoff Boycott will be doing his nut. He expects a batsman who makes a ton to get his head down and turn it into 150 or 200.
Who's this Joe Root fellow, anyway? 23 on this pitch? Can't be much of a batsman!

500 would be a huge total in 90 overs; in 75 it's mind boggling- especially for first day of an away test series.

What do you do now? What the hell do you declare on if it goes well tomorrow? 800? 1000? Keep batting till you're out? It usually burns most of 2 days to get to 500. Loads of time left..

Re: Pakistan v England 1st Test
I’d be looking to keep them out there until about an hour after lunch.
Assuming we bat for that long. With this style of batting it’s not going to surprise anyone if we lose wicket’s extremely quick now and then.

Re: Pakistan v England 1st Test
Let’s go for some records! Another batter reaching his century would equal the record for centuries in an innings so that might be doable.Stanbill05 wrote: ↑Thu Dec 01, 2022 7:50 pmWhat do you do now? Re: Pakistan v England 1st Test
I think I'd keep them in the field most of tomorrow if you can and try and break them some more. Few overs before tea and then attack( if you can on this pitch) for the final session.

Keep them out there until halfway through the first session on the third day. 8 and a half sessions should be enough. Apparently the wicket is not expected to deteriorate much.

Re: Pakistan v England 1st Test
Not a bad 1st day for England ,and you have to feel for Pakistan's bowlers who will resume tomorrow against a set Brook and Stokes who have licence to play their strokes, mind you the way England play test cricket they seem determined to be positive no matter what the state of the game.
There was the question over whether England would smash 500 in an ODI, but no one expected them to plunder 500 in a day of test cricket, and certainly not in 75 overs.

Re: Pakistan v England 1st Test
England end on 657, Pakistan 106-0 in reply.
Brook getting his 150 before the tail had some fun.
Mahmood on his test debut finished with the bizarre figures of 4-235.
Currently it seems to be heading towards a tame draw, however there is still plenty of time left for either side to push for a win.

Sounds like the Indian pitches of old. Everyone gets a century and then it ends in a draw.

A test for the batsmen to fill their boots this one, and it should be a nailed on draw from here.
2nd test at Multan might be a different story hopefully.

Re: Pakistan v England 1st Test
Another day of toil for England, both Pakistan openers completed their centuries, and Babar is poised to bring up the 7th ton of the match.
383-3 after 108 overs, 2 wickets for Leach, and a wicket for Jacks, but it's hard going for any bowler on this road.

Re: Pakistan v England 1st Test
411-3 at tea, Babar did get his ton, but I sense it might not be the last 100 of this game.
Pakistan well placed to potentially gain a 1st innings lead and perhaps put England under pressure 2nd innings late in the match.

499-7 at close, those 4 wickets in the last session make it England's day ultimately, and given they still lead by 158 if they can quickly wrap up this Pakistan innings in the morning then a victory push could yet be on.

Time running out
Don’t want to bat well again and set Pakistan a total that they can chase and get and if lose a few wickets can shut up shop for a draw.

This England side don't play for draws and they've said they will attempt to win the game if possible even if that means potentially losing.DAVETHEVICAR wrote: ↑Sat Dec 03, 2022 3:01 pmTime running out

Certainly not boring England 264-7 at tea, runs for Brook, Crawley and root, and the RR is crazy again England have racked up that total in under 36 overs breaking further records in the process.
I guess they'll carry on swinging after tea, then hope to get a few overs at Pakistan tonight.

Yes, a bold declaration, but credit to Stokes who yet again has taken the attacking option to try and win the game.
