The most exciting football, the best of Coyle or the best of Kompany ?
OK VK has only been with us a while but we have had some fantastic team play as well as individual brilliance, under Coyle some swashbuckling attacking play and stunning victories, taking away your personal feelings towards Coyle what is the most enjoyable style Coyle or Kompany ?
Both followed managers who were pragmatic in their approach to football and it is fair to say the football was boring at the end, one reinvigorated what he inherited no mean feat, one had to totally rebuild a squad from scratch after a relegation with financial constraints, a massive undertaking.
For me it is so very close but under Kompany I think we have seen better possession based team play finished off with some brilliant fast decisive attacking passing unlocking the most resolute of defences. We always look like we have a plan with VK.

Re: The most exciting football, the best of Coyle or the best of Kompany ?
This current side have far more resources to dominate the opposition but excitement wise I would say Coyles football.
I'm slowly getting used to this patient possession football and wins against rovers can only help.
But we expect to win in the championship and Coyle got us some unbelievable wins against Premier league sides.
So for now it would have to be Coyle, but this is only the beginning of the ride.

Kompany by a mile. The best football under Dyche was more exciting than Coyle's.

We had Danny ings in this team and we’d have 100 points already…
Re: The most exciting football, the best of Coyle or the best of Kompany ?
Coyle.
I only saw a few Championship games under Coyle but from the first game at Watford he was a breath of fresh air after Cotterill. You didn't know what to expect. That's what made it exciting. And the promotion year with cup runs.....
With Komany I almost expect us to win now and generally it's pretty predictable. I enjoy it but it's not as exciting.
Mind you I prefer Kompany as a manager as, at least for the first six months, it's been almost seamless progress. You wonder how well he and we can do. That too is quite exciting.

Most exciting football was under Dyche in the champ. That Ings and Vokes partnership was magic

Re: The most exciting football, the best of Coyle or the best of Kompany ?
It's a hard one.
Exciting football usually appears after a period of dire football.
For that reason Jimmy Mullen has to be included. He certainly got a "thing" going.
Coyle is probably the best as he was responsible for the punching above our weight period.
VK is brilliant and getting better, but it's as though we expect it and we aren't punching above our weight at the moment.
If VK has some memorable cup runs then he will get my vote,
But at the moment it's Coyle.

Re: The most exciting football, the best of Coyle or the best of Kompany ?
Coyle looked exciting mainly because he followed Cotterball.
If you put that side (they scraped 6th BTW) beside todays champ leaders there really would be no comparison.
Blake apart I really don't think there's another player from Coyles side that Kompany would look twice at.
There's a reason we're nearly selling out atm and were getting 13k or so under Coyle BTW.

Totally agree, but the question is what is the more exciting football. Dyche's team would flatten Jimmy Mullens 4th division team but Jimmy's teams were far more exciting ( that said Dyche did have a dire record against lower level teams )Top Claret wrote: ↑Sat Dec 03, 2022 7:24 pmKompany Burnley would bury Coyles Burnley, no comparison.

But is it more exciting then say the win in the play offs at Reading, the relentless pressure to beat Tottenham at the at the Turf only to fall at the last hurdle.Vegas Claret wrote: ↑Sat Dec 03, 2022 7:33 pmThis current team would play every team I've seen in 40 years off the park, not sure it would cope with set pieces with Mee, Tarks and Wood though

For someone who really enjoys the tactical side of football then it’s a no brainer for VK. It’s been fascinating to see a Burnley team like this and I’m expecting it will only get better from here.

I was amazed at the football that Coyle brought us, particularly the pass and move stuff. very fluid.
But when this new team gets going it really is special.

It’s difficult to divorce exciting football from exciting games. There’s not much to touch that play-off season for excitement and the 15/16 season under Dyche is up there as well.

It depends how you count it. If you are counting per minute of possession, then it would be coyle, or better still, the vokes line up referred to above.
Then we had about 40 minutes possession and maybe 2-3 exciting minutes. Now we have about the same excitement but 65 minutes possession

other than Defour our midfield is far more dynamic now imho, I still think this side would play that team off the park, like I said though, the old team would probably score from set pieces ! Interesting debate though

I agree with that, but when you take into account the age of VKs squad, and the relatively short time it's been together, then another 12 months could well change that opinion.

I’d say Coyle. Kompanys side is much better but the fact there were some average players, playing above their capabilities gave Coyles team an edge. There were more Peronalities too as these were seasoned pros. Then there was Blake who was special and J Rod who was a real prospect, and the first decent player we had cultivated for a while.

Certainly more edge of the seat under Coyle because we were more susceptible at the back. Eagles has come in for a lot of stick because he didn’t cut it in the EPL but he was a very exciting player in the Championship. Blake was a joy to watch, Wade Elliott was a cracking player and McCann was very good in the promotion season. I still prefer watching the current side.

Re: The most exciting football, the best of Coyle or the best of Kompany ?
At one level it is a bit early for this. Coyle won promotion, as did Dyche mk 1. This team is on course to join them but let's not count our chickens any more than we did when in a similar position- and playing a similar way - 21 years ago.
That said if there is a comparison with the three previous promotion winning sides, it is Coyles. I agree Dyche mk 1 was in its own way good to watch but it was never as expansive as this team and didn't have the "he who dares wins" mentality that this team and Coyles had. There was a fluidity to some of the movement of Coyles team that had a bit in common with this team (Elliot overlapping on the right, McCann driving into space beyond Blake down the left).
I'm not sure the romance of that Coyle season can ever be compared to this. With the cup runs and the sense of adventure it was an altogether naiver experience. We're harder bitten now, and whilst we probably did ultimately need promotion that year as much as we do now, I think we're more aware of the economics now.
But I do love watching this side play, with its emphasis on width and passing. In a sense its probably the sophisticated version of Coyle-ball there might have emerged with a bit more money and an attitude to coaching which went beyond inspiration and 5 asides. But as I say, Coyle won something. So far Kompany hasn't, even if the signs are good.

Re: The most exciting football, the best of Coyle or the best of Kompany ?
You have to take the context into account. Under Coyle we'd never been up to the Premier League and when Barry Kilby made the 'Chairman's pledge' nobody really expected it to happen.
The cup run and the play-offs certainly added to the excitement factor under OC but most of that was in the second half of the season. We've still to experience anything like that under Kompany. The only big occasion so far was the derby and that certainly didn't disappoint.
As for promotion, it's a bit like making love to a beautiful woman, the first time is always much more exciting than the 1000th. Will a fourth promotion be as exciting now that we know exactly what to expect?
If you're talking purely in terms of the quality of the football then I reckon this team has the potential to be far better in terms of style and results and we've seen glimpses.
