Whatever happened to the ‘School bus’?

Post by Mala591 » Sun Dec 04, 2022 10:33 am

Did councils around the country withdraw them to save money? The number of cars outside schools in the morning and afternoon is ridiculous. I remember catching the bus (I think it was the ‘contract 4’ bus) from Pike Hill to Burnley Grammar School, no parents drove their kids to school then.

We are useless eaters. Anything that costs them to provide for us is taken off us.

Still get dedicated school services if you live in the sticks

Not free though (unless you go to the nearest school)

Still one or two that go through Padiham but I agree about the cars and traffic outside schools. It doesn’t help with the council doing yet more roadworks on the main road a few hundred yards down the road either! Bloody nightmare they are.

The number of noisy, chavvy kids on public transport now is horrendous. I purposely avoid the times the annoying pillocks travel to and from school if I'm off work and need to go shopping or whatever.

When I was a lad, the only time you caught the service bus was if you were late for school or were kept behind for detention!

A consequence of this is parents, inevitably mostly women, sitting outside schools in their cars with the engine running, which is illegal and immoral.

The school buses are outside contracted and the parents from the Padiham area who send kids to St Augustines are always complaining about them.
They cost more than a normal service bus (but obviously get you right to your destination) and aren't the most reliable.

Seems like the bus companies don't want to run them though. Probably too much damage and hassle for the profit they can make.

Cost is a huge issue. If my eldest gets into the school of our choice it’ll cost over £800 a year for her to catch the school bus.

As mentioned, all now run by private companies. There's queues of the bloody things around here between 3 and 4pm, each bus serving a different school and some look to have only about half a dozen kids on - I've no idea how that's meant to be cost effective.

Just a small part of the services that councils have been forced to withdraw.

The school bus must have been a bloody nightmare for the conductors, none more so than the poor sod we nicknamed Pin Head, who used to get the **** taken out of him something awful.

We'd been told at school that double decker buses could lean over 28 degrees before they would tip so as the bus went round corners we used to rush to one side to see if we could tip it, never did.

Other favourite was to just jump off the back of the bus whilst it was till moving. One lad in particular used to jump off right outside his front door but as we were going up Manchester Road it was probably only doing 10 mph.

One of my biggest gripes is seeing dozens of cars parked outside schools. You should walk your kids to school. I know that's not practical for everyone, but I would hazard a guess that most are only 5 to 10 minutes drive from the school to home. Walking to school was a big part of the educational experience for me. Meeting your friends en route, running home swinging a pump bag over your head. Happy days

You’ll soon find out that it isn’t ‘the school of your choice’ it’s ‘the school of your preference’. But that important and contentious issue should be left for another thread.

Society has changed that's why, from one where cars were a luxury to being easy to own, so parents got into the habit of driving their kids to school, even when its a very short distance

Most schools operate with their pupils required to live within a certain radius, so in theory buses wouldn't be needed these days for most places, apart from rural areas.
I understand young kids getting dropped off by parents, but not high school kids.

My two teenage lads walked/cycled/skateboarded to their high school, about 1.5miles ish, unless it was torrential rain, in which case their mum/Nan dropped them off.
As an 80's/90's kid I walked to both primary and high school and they were about a mile from my house, but we didn't have a car so I had no choice.

Still buses round here along with top of the range Range Rovers, Jags, Porche etc, sat outside schools blocking the roads and pavements with mummy driving, sat in her designer gear saying “look at me and what I’m driving” .

Same. We used to walk just over a mile to school, it was the best bit of the day, chatting, playing football etc on the way back. A few of the lads I used to walk back home with I'm still mates with now even though we live all over. I make both of mine walk to school and back whatever the weather, keeps them fit too.

"Most schools operate with their pupils required to live in a certain radius ".Very much not the case in Lancashire. David Cameron's National Planning Policy Framework delivered in 2013 pretty much allows any developer to build wherever they wish with little regard for matching up housing with available infrastructure. In a nutshell, too many houses, too few school places within a given locality.
Any parent looking to relocate to any big shiny new housing estate should check school place availability before they dive in. LCC education department are having an increasing headache when it comes to finding school places, dealing with appeals etc.

Down here they're knocking up the homes but also adding schools where required.

People have too much money and spend it stupidly. We need a "correction" - cost of living crisis, eh?

You may well be right ( I’ve genuinely no idea ) though much as I try I can’t find any of your “ 3 tenets “ in the post ? As for “ mainly women “ doing the school run/ picking up etc I’d stake my life on it that the statement is true factually . Maybe 75/25 ish . A bit like saying perhaps that “ boxing is mainly men “ plenty of cracking women in the sport but it’s “ mainly blokes “ Anyway the football beckons !
