75 hours to Moscow. Who's been to a world Cup?

Post by JohnC » Sun Dec 04, 2022 11:31 am

Have any fellow Clarets been to a World Cup? And what were your memories? I've seen a few mentions on here of the one in '66.

I've been sat on these pictures on my phone for four years intending to make a short video. With the World Cup on, it seemed as good a time as any. Don't know if it's of interest but it's the build up to the semi-final against Croatia in 2018.
After England beat Sweden on the Saturday and euphoria taking over the country I managed to get a ticket from FIFA the following day. Flew to Helsinki on the Monday and onto Moscow on the Tuesday. In time for the semi-final against Croatia on the Wednesday.
With Tripps scoring early on it was turning into the best day ever. It was a fantastic experience, ultimately with a sad ending.

Went to 2006 World Cup.
Had tickets for the last 16 game in Munich.
But for an injury time equaliser in the final group game it would have been Germany v England !! Instead it was Germany v Sweden.
Still a great experience. Stadium was fantastic. Only been recently built. Fantastic atmosphere. Germany won 2-0 but it should have been 7 or 8 nil.

Stayed in Munich for 3 or 4 days I think. The fan fests were brilliant. Remember watching Mexico v Argentina in the fan fest and couple of great goals in a great match and the place was bouncing.

I’m planning on going to next World Cup

I also went to Germany in 2006. I was trying everything to get a ticket. In the end I got England v Sweden in Cologne from the FA. Then I got one off FIFA for England v Paraguay in Frankfurt. Then I won a competition with Coca Cola to see England v Trinidad in Nuremberg. They were all group stage matches and because I got tickets at separate times I booked 3 return flights in a short space of time. I’d have stayed out there had I known. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Another one for Germany 2006. I went with work to accompany corporate guests and was based in Stuttgart. I saw three games - Spain/Tunisia; Australia/Croatia, and fortunately England/Ecuador

I got to see the Mercedes museum, but the fan-fest in Schlossplatz was by far the highlight. I exchanged my England shirt for an Ecuador shirt, which I wore to watch their game against the Dutch, while on a recent vacation in Puerto Rico

I went to France v Holland at euro 96.

My dad (bigdave48) entered a teletex caption competition to win tickets for the Germany v Russia at old Trafford. He got a phone call from the women at teletex who informed him he had won two adult tickets.
My dad being a single parent with two boys asked the lady if he could possibly have 1 adult and 2 kids tickets instead of two adult tickets as he didn’t want to let one of his lads down and couldn’t afford to buy a ticket as they were very expensive and he was bringing us up on his own.

The women said “I’m sorry but there are only two tickets but they’re is another caption competition tomorrow so you never know you might win again”.

My dad entered and the same women called to inform my dad he had won again. What a nice thing to do.

The game was very dull but I remember the Holland fans being brilliant with me. I was only 9. They decked me out in Holland gear and told me to support Holland which I did

What a great story Inchy. 😁

In a similar vein, I went to Germany for 3 weeks in ‘06 and every game we had our hundred(s) of euros ready to buy tickets off touts but to no avail- they were 300+.

Then just before the stuttgart game two yanks came up asking me and a mate are you real football fans, how much would you give for these tickets? and gave us them for free.

Apparently there had been media about too many tickets for corporates and they wanted to give them to “real supporters”! Happy days.

I went to Moscow for the semi final and like JohnC had a fantastic time, somehow thinks it would not be the same now, decided against Quatar, just didn’t fancy it.

Germany 2006 , fantastic trip. 7 games in 7 cities in 7 days.
Sweden V Trinidad &Tobago - Dortmund
Italy v Ghana - Hanover got tickets from a tout at the ground stamped Ghana FA! FIFA declared a sell out yet we sat in the Italian end
Portugal v Angola - Cologne
Togo v South Korea - Frankfurt
England V Trinidad & Tobago - Nuremberg
Tunisia v Saudi Arabia - Munich
Holland v Ivory Coast - Stuttgart.

Can honestly say the football was almost secondary to the whole atmosphere everywhere we went.

Think I’ve been to roughly 30 England games but probably only 1 in the last 8 years, lost the buzz as I grew up and it helped that Burnley were doing well.

Plus getting kicked out of the supporters club didn’t help 😂

1982 SPAIN…….went via Santander on the ferry in my first car, a mini with a mate sadly no longer with us………..bizarre on the ferry, one end “northern” ie Leeds, Burnley, scousers………..the other end southerners ie Millwall Spurs……….24 hour trip with mucho beer……..scrapping between various factions on the way across……..but then coming off the ferry became the band of brothers looking to fight the French!!!

Took in the first game but decided life was more important so drove to the south of France and watched matches in various bars!

Just watched your video JohnC, great job, brought back many memories for me.
We just decided to go over for the atmosphere after managing to acquire visas by somewhat dodgy means, got there and couldn’t resist buying a semi final ticket from a Russian tout the day before, disappointing at the end but nevertheless a great experience. Our route took us from Luton on Wizzair via Budapest then Aeroflot into Moscow, all arranged after the quarter final victory.

Germany 2006, like many above.
3 of us, driving and camping. We didn't actually get to a match, but we were in Dortmund/Koln for Sweden, and Stuttgart for Ecuador.
Koln was fantastic, beautiful and lots of fun.
The sheer size of the travelling England support (100,000+?) meant that they had to hastily construct a separate fanfest area just for us. A vast swathe of land on the banks of the Rhein.
The main fanfests were amazing, as were the campsites.
As NRC above wrote - the Stuttgart Schlossplatz was out of this world.. it was 35 degrees that day, and there were lots of sunburnt topless English blokes...

Another impressive list there Targetman, you must have some fantastic memories.
Cheers Durham Claret, I'd booked to stay until after the final and managed to get a ticket. Must've been three times the number of Croatia fans as there were from France. Another terrific experience.

My brother went to every single game held in London in 1966, including the game between Mexico and France held at the White City because Wembley was needed for greyhound racing on the same night.
He got his tickets for himself and his mates one cold, frosty morning from a 'hut' close by to Wembley stadium the January before. He was a student in London and made his way across the city and knocked on the door of the 'hut' where tickets were being sold. A man opened the hatch and simply asked my brother how many he wanted. It was as simple as that. Nine games in total. Those were the days.

Euro's Poland 2012 and France 2016

Only gone to see Ireland play , now did manage to get to see a semi final and the Final in Italy and got to see Deigo play twice .

I retire in a couple of years time and it may be the end of the road watching the Boys in Green at World Cups , who knows .

Japan 2002 was the best experience for me, I loved the country and the Japanese loved the England fans. Never been made as welcome when following England in a tournament, although Kosovo came a close second in recent years when I was there for England's qualifier.

Brazil in 2014 was also brilliant, as I'm sure you would expect. Spent 2 weeks there following England for the 3 group games, didn't see a win!

In between England's games we managed to get a couple of nights at an AirB&B in Rio, England didn't actually play there.
Stayed on the edge of a favella there which were deemed 'no go areas' by the media beforehand.

Went with some trepidation to a bar in the favella to see if we could get some food. There were 3 of us, my mate was wearing a Burnley tee shirt, a bloke came over to us as we sat down and said....."Alright lads, I'm from Harle Syke and work in Rio"
He introduced us to all the locals in the bar and we had a great night there.
Small world!

My mates were in a hostel in Rio, Googled where the team were staying and checked Booking. Com

Was relatively cheap so they booked in, surprised the team weren't kept secluded they were sharing facilities with Roy and players 😁

Germany 2006, retired at the end of May 2006 so that I could spend 6 weeks in Germany.
Saw 10 games in 10 different stadia, all the 5 England games with VIP tickets plus 2 more VIP tickets plus 3 tickets on the Black Market.
Travelled to all 12 stadia with the first-class World Cup train ticket from my base in the Black Forest (visited England's hotel on the Black Forest Highway after they had been eliminated in Gelsenkirchen). Met loads of football fans including Badeel and Skinner Skinner in Berlin and in Gelsenkirchen (where their seats were just in from to mine), Champagne Willy, ex-President of Bayern München (Will O. Hoffmann who actually died earlier this year) at the Allianz Arena along with Michael Käfer (German Chef). Cost me a fortune but was worth every penny !!

In February 66, tickets went on sale and I bought a package of tickets for 9 games, 8 in the north west as well as the final. I had always thought that the north west group would be the best and so it proved. I was able to watch Pele, and Eusebio and Albert were brilliant. After watching Eusebio almost single handedly beat North Korea I left Goodison looking forward to the England/Portugal semi final which was scheduled to be at Goodison. I watched match of the day that night to hear David Coleman announce that the semifinals had been switched and the England game would be played at Wembley so that more people could watch it! I was annoyed but really felt for all the Portuguese fans who had bought tickets to see their team play. I cannot think any home nation would get away with making such a last minute change to the schedule these days!

Watched the same games but I was not even a teenager at the time but still good memories of seeing the games, none otherwise since then but I'm thinking the N. American WC I will go to a game or two, depending on where the matches are played.

I lived in the San Francisco Bay Area during the 1994 World Cup. Saw Russia beat Cameroon 6-1, Oleg Salenko scored 5 goals for Russia, I think it is still a WC record for a single player in a single game. I also saw Sweden beat Romania in a quarter final game, remember being impressed by the Romanian player Hagi.
Quick Pele anecdote. The Stanford stadium was the "home" stadium for Brazil, Pele was in town doing some sort of broadcast duty. Rod Stewart was in town during one of the games, he would show up for quasi-formal ex-pat games played every year in the area, and according to a friend of mine who also played in these, Rod was a very decent footballer. Pele found out Rod was in the stadium and sent someone down to invite him up to the booth to hang. Mr Stewart, who was a few drinks into the proceedings by then, turned to this fellow and said, "You tell Pele to f#$% off, I'm here with me mates".
