Re: England v Senegal WC R16
Foden and Bellingham make this team tick.
If it were Sterling and Mount, the manager’s preferred pair going into the tournament, we could have lost tonight. If he is to insist on only playing 3 attackers they need to be able to conjure up the unexpected, like Foden did for goal 1 which opened them up like a tin of beams and Bellingham did the rest.
With this XI, we have a chance, but with this defence it is only a faint chance.

Senegal looked decent for the first half hour. The first goal just knocked the stuffing out of them.

If we can get that first 35 minutes out of our system then we can go all the way in this world cup.

I'm not sure why you're looking to criticise Southgate about players he didn't pick lol.

Re: England v Senegal WC R16
Everybody rattling on about that first 30 minutes, Lee Dixon especially, but I thought we were Ok but gave them the ball dangerously 2 or 3 times.
Possession was 72% in that first half hour. We had almost unlocked them a couple of times. I’ve criticised this team often. But that was good tonight.

nah, if we do that against France it's game over - that's the point. Give Mbappe and Giroud those chances and it's a different storyCrosspoolClarets wrote: ↑Sun Dec 04, 2022 8:48 pmEverybody rattling on about that first 30 minutes, Lee Dixon especially, but I thought we were Ok but gave them the ball dangerously 2 or 3 times.

No team is rock solid. I take your point and it wasn’t ideal but they had a couple of sniffs. That was it. A single good chance.Vegas Claret wrote: ↑Sun Dec 04, 2022 8:49 pmnah, if we do that against France it's game over - that's the point. Give Mbappe and Giroud those chances and it's a different story
Good performance. My only grilpe on him has been not picking our best players because they don’t track back well (Foden) but can’t gripe about him tonight, it worked.
Re: England v Senegal WC R16
It doesn't take much of an expert to see that pattern, all of our goals after the 35th minute. Top scorers in the competition. You'd be an absolute fool to criticise before the 35th minute with the score still level.

Re: England v Senegal WC R16
Impressive win in the end and another clean sheet that's 3 in a row now.
Still things to improve upon notably at the back, but with the forward talent we'll trouble any side, and I'm not that convinced by France yet, however they do have a front 2 who will pose us plenty of problems.

Re: England v Senegal WC R16
The French defence isn't that good , so hopefully he'll go with the front 3 that started tonight . Southgate will have sleepless nights dreaming of Mbappe running at Maguire , so there's a good chance he'll go with 3 centre halfs .

France have not kept a clean sheet at these finals ... lets keep it that way
Re: England v Senegal WC R16
Thought we were excellent once we scored. 3 clean sheets in a row and looking super dangerous in attack. Bellingham, Foden and Saka are so good on the ball!

Re: England v Senegal WC R16
Nonsense.
That slow, ponderous start will be our undoing one day.
A better side will make us pay.
I get that we have to have a good look at what the other side have to offer and to try and take control but we could quite easily have gone behind in this game.

Being reported on the Chelsea forum that armed thugs have broken into sterling's home whilst family members were in and that's why he was missing tonight

Re: England v Senegal WC R16
Nice clinical performance can’t fault it . Though Senegal were bluddy awful , the tactical naivety for a corner at 0-1 with 1 min to HT was like an u8 game , almost laughable .
Panned out a bit like a too prem side v mid table champ . Now it really starts let’s see what we can do vs a world class team .

Re: England v Senegal WC R16
Let’s look at the positives.
After 4 games at this World Cup we have conceded the least (after 4 full games) And scored the most.
France are obviously a very good side, however they have conceded in every game so far and are heavily reliant on Mbappe. If we are going to win this tournament this is exactly the type of team we need to dispatch.

Not in any way shape or form saying he should have to, but it does surprise me that these lads on hundreds of thousands of pounds per week don't employ security teams especially with them spending so much time away from home. This has been happening for years (especially with Liverpool players)

Southgate confirmed in his post match interview that this is correct and Sterling has flown back home to London.
