Would be handy to have a keeper though! We may as well play another holding midfielder!Lancasterclaret wrote: ↑Wed Jan 25, 2023 10:51 amMuric essentially gives us 11 ball playing outfield players against everyone else only having 10
Its a huge advantage and its absolutely key to how we play, and why we've been so successful this season

Re: Nick Pope
I think it's safe to say that with the way Muric plays for us, and with the way Pope plays for Newcastle then opinion will be firmly divided as to the way football should be played out from the back along with the relative merits/weaknesses of both.
That will never change until either keeper leaves.

Good point.kentonclaret wrote: ↑Wed Jan 25, 2023 11:07 am£10 million may have been a steal for Pope but £25 million for Wood goes a long way to redressing the balance.
Re: Nick Pope
This is my point, really. As incredible as Pope is, he wouldn't fit the system as well, so we had to sell as VK couldn't have dropped him.Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Wed Jan 25, 2023 9:56 amIf Kompany dropped Pope for Muric he would have got lynched.
Re: Nick Pope
That's because we have 70+% of the possession. Whenever there is a chance at our end, most end up in the net. Muric is as weak a keeper as there is. Superb footwork for passing. Gets dominated by the opposition, despite being 9 foot 8.
Re: Nick Pope
That would be great. Is Alysson available?arise_sir_charge wrote: ↑Wed Jan 25, 2023 11:10 amHow about if you have someone who is 6 foot 5, can pass like an holding midfielder but keep goal like a keeper?

Re: Nick Pope
Short arms will still get picked by Southgate before Pope even when he's playing for Everton in the Championship next season
Pope must be in the top five of keepers in the World, and I mean goalkeepers not those that get plaudits because they can pass a ball about at the back....

Re: Nick Pope
What do you think is a crucial element to having 70+% possession? Who do you think serves a pivotal role in that, especially when closing games out? I have faith you'll get there eventually.
Also, I thought we'd lost this nonsense about him not being able to make a save. He's made some very commendable ones this season. Anyway, I feel this is wasted time.

Telling boomers that they are wrong despite all the evidence being right in front of them is a complete waste of time

It gets more and more preposterous if Pickford keeps his England place.

I'm defending Muric and I'm a 'boomer'. It gets annoying when people assume all people of a certain age-group are of the same opinion. Especially when those opinions are really stupid.

I'd have guessed your age as between 45-50. You might've told me before. I think there's half a generation between us.

Re: Nick Pope
With all due respect there is a massive difference on knowing why we got £10m and being happy with £10m. I can appreciate why we only got £10 but it was an absolute steal at that price. People were making all sorts of comments about his age and the price being right for it.RVclaret wrote: ↑Wed Jan 25, 2023 8:12 amNot sure on that exactly. I could see why the deal was done, at that time, at that price. Hoped for 15m+.
What I found hard to believe is how some posters couldn't see that you need several bidding clubs to be able to raise the price.
Like I said at the time, Newcastle held all the cards, yet inadvertently, despite the lower fee, it helped kick start our outstanding summer window (we signed 3 players within that week including Twine).
In the end a win win for all parties.
I can't say Pope's sale led to the financing of our summer deals when we made the amount of money we did on sales over that window.

He wouldn’t fit in with our new system any road.
