Just been to see this film, which was filmed during the making of Harvest in 1971. It's only on a very limited release over the next week but if you're a fan of Neil Young it's well worth a watch.

Don’t know much about him but I do recall being a boy of I’d guess, six or seven, listening to my dad’s vinyl of Rockin’ in the Free World…over and over.

I'm a big fan of the difficult, awkward, argumentative, talented old sod.

A great artist with an attitude problem. Love him to bits.

I spent ages wanting to learn a song, any Neil Young song, and chose Cripple creek ferry but now wonder in Woke-land
if I can ever perform it now. I can sing it pretty good in my car, there's a great base/drum intro and its only got two verses and another chorus.

Give his unplugged album a listen. Some great tracks on there. Superb from start to finish, but Like a hurricane, transformer man and Pocahontas stand outs for me.

Never thought Harvest was his best work personally.

I'd have picked out Stars and Bars probably, and ATGR.

Powderfinger is my favourite song mind.

What I love about Neil Young, the first decade or so of his solo career especially, is the variety and eclecticism he crammed in.

You’ve got the solo troubadour Neil on ATG, Harvest, Comes A Time. You’ve got the fantastic chaos of his Crazy Horse records (someone up the thread said they taught themselves Cripple Creek Ferry, when I was learning guitar I learned the rhythm bits of Down By The River. Then you’ve got his brilliant ‘Ditch’ trilogy of Time Fades Away, On The Beach, and Tonight’s The Night which couldn’t be further from Heart of Gold and Only Love Can Break Your Heart. For me it’s the rougher versions of Neil, but the wife loves Harvest.

I recommend the biography, Shakey by Jimmy McDonough. Young, especially in the 70’s was peerless, but an absolute nightmare to work with.

Neil Young these days seems to be about mining his archives and making money.

There is a 50th anniversary edition of Harvest that includes Harvest Time (and the BBC sessions) on DVD:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Harvest-50th-A ... 886&sr=1-1

I have a couple of live versions of some of the Harvest songs culled from one of his archives releases:

The song is pretty much as on the album except the pedal steel which I love on this.

Well he can’t sing very well and his electric guitar playing is woeful, but I have always enjoyed Neil Young and have loads of his vinyl albums, when I played in an acoustic trio his songs always featured, but his heavier stuff never made it into our rock band set.

I know Lynyrd Skynyrd aren’t fans :).

I didn’t mind him, just thought that there was a lot better going on at the time. Creedence we’re on the point of breaking up unfortunately, Cat Stevens was putting out some great stuff, the nonces Led Zep were in their pomp, Dylan, Joni Mitchell, ELP, John Prine, the list goes on

I remember watching MTV unplugged and seeing a guy sweeping on the stage to replace a brush on the snare.... I hadn't realized it was also done on the official video. I remember being stunned at the genius in the simplicity.

I don't often dance, but I will grab my wife's hand to dance to this anytime, anywhere

Absolutely brilliant video.
First line - 'come a little bit closer, hear what I have to say".
Ed Sheeran could live to be 100 and never pen a lyric as good as that.
Four strong winds is a track I could listen to all night long.

I liked Harvest a lot at the time but dont think it's aged very well (other than maybe "needle"). I prefer to listen to Harvest Moon nowadays rather than Harvest.
Still love to listen to his "Like a Hurricane" and "Cortez the Killer" tracks (not on either of the two above mentioned albums but both on the v good double compilation "Decade" of course.)

Thanks for the 'heads up', I'll check the film out. Big fan of Buffalo Springfield and early Neil Young solo work. After the Gold Rush is one of my most played albums from my youth and it still sounds remarkably fresh today.

He's sold 50 percent of his worldwide copyright to an investment company. They'll squeeze every last ounce out of it.

I wouldn't tar all Zep with the brush, especially JPJ.

Fair enough, though Robert Plant and JPJ must have turned a blind eye to Page and Bonham and what they got up to.

I agree. You can also include the music industry in regard to the 'blind eye' and society as a whole, I suppose. It was done in plain sight, and wrote about at the time in the music press. Doesn't excuse them, though.
