SSN saying 'in a deal worth £10m if they are promoted this season'. Hope for Forest's sake that the basic is £9.99m.

They might be. Remove the Ternents and add the Oversons. They actually played together in the same side.
I though Ray and Stan Ternent were at the club together in the late 60' but just googled and although from the NE they were not related

Looks like Agyei has been signed on a 4 and a half year contract then loaned to Mechelen to play games so that he'll qualify for a work permit next season

https://m.nieuwsblad.be/cnt/dmf20230131 ... rce=google
Ah that makes sense why we’ve spent 350k to bring him in now as opposed to a free in summer. Accelerates the work permit. Defour doing his old club a favour or vice versa?

With the amount of signings we’re sourcing from Belgium it would make sense to get a proper partnership with a Belgian club and once you take the big clubs out of the equation we could do a lot worse than Mechelen

SSN reporting Southampton in for 2 strikers, totalling £40m (one from Genk) and Bournemouth in for 2 players, totalling £45m. Huge sums for clubs staring over the PL precipice.

Yep, feels like clubs even near the bottom have gone big. Bournemouth are at almost 70m this window alone I think. Saints won’t be far off the same amount.

The spending by those smaller clubs has been crazy and does make me wonder how we’ll survive in that kind of environment, if promoted. It seems to have gone up a whole new level.

One day to go before 2022-23 #transferdeadline.

In 2020-21 season, just one PL club had a net spend of £100m+.

In 2021-22, it was 3 clubs.

So far in 2022-23, 8 PL clubs can boast of a net spend of £100m+.

I suspect our owners will make the Premier League work for us and in some ways I’m more excited by our forthcoming promotion that I was following our other promotions.
We already have exciting players that will test defences and there are clear signs we are already planning for the challenge.
I remember looking at players like Dunk at Brighton who I thought would be eaten up but weren’t. There are loads of other examples.
Good teamwork and spirit is the key for survival and we have both in abundance. It’s difficult to see Kompany walking away any time soon from what he’s created

Obviously nothing new but the PL gets further away from anything resembling a football league every year. Obscene expenditure and it really should be stopped if we want to keep what little semblance of competition there is. It can't/ won't be though.

Really highlights the importance of spending intelligently, and not just throwing bucket loads at it. I reckon if you're spending £40m+ in January while hovering around the relegation places you're just throwing good money at bad.

Agree about the teamwork and spirit point.

I was more alluding to the sustainability of a club like ours operating in an environment where the minimum cost of incoming players seems to be £20m…! And we’d clearly need a few of those to strengthen the team from what we have now. But hopefully they have a plan for that, as you say.

I know people don't like bringing these two clubs up for various reasons but Brentford/Brighton have to be our model. Brighton's entire team that beat Liverpool 3-0 the other week was a total 31m in cost. They got 25m for Potter when he went to Chelsea and hired a better coach for free.

Didn’t Brighton spend about £500m or something? Although I agree, they seem to have picked up absolute bargains of late for €5m and discussing selling them for £70m!!! Staggering.

Hadn’t realised about Potter. That’s more unbelievable business.

No - their net spend since Potter took over is one of the lowest in the league. They spent a fair bit at first, weirdly, under Hughton, mainly on rubbish. Regardless, more to the point they have shown you can build good quality teams through good recruitment and stay in the league with good quality managers. Between Caicedo and MacAllister they’ve got another 100-130m of sales if they needed to.

I have been pointing this out for years but few seem to actually listen - but now Brighton have become - The model club (which used to be ourselves, West Brom before us and Charlton before them - so god help Brighton and Brentford). It is also worth noting that Brentford owner Mathew Benham help produce the original models for Bloom before starting out on his own

btw no football club has or could even afford the set-up Bloom has at Starlizard

The 200 maths prodigies who help Brighton conquer the transfer market
Albion's owner Tony Bloom founded a sports analytics company that gives the Premier League's model club the edge in talent identification
