Dwight

Post by jedi_master » Wed Dec 28, 2022 12:11 pm

I was curious how he was doing at Everton after watching highlights of the Wolves game. I saw he grabbed an assist with a good corner, and I had seen him score a couple earlier on in the season. Whilst Everton are doing garbage I had perceived that McNeil was doing OK overall there comparative to what was playing around him. I thought I would check out 'Grand Old Team', Everton's messageboard, to have a read.

Wow. I was pretty wrong.

https://www.grandoldteam.com/forum/thre ... 4/page-136

I was a huge fan of McNeil and was gutted when we sold him, so I don't want this to be a slagging off thread, but the words on that thread are a real shame to read. Will he ever get his mojo back of the first 18 months or so when he broke into our side? He looked destined for the very top. How much did we really get for him, as there was talk of £15m, £20m and even £25m! How do people think he would have done under Kompany?

McNeil's problem is he has no pace.
That will always find you out in the Prem.

He'd have done fine this season for us. However he was beginning to be found out last season, and I think we sold him at the right time

I think it was outstanding business getting 20m for him.

It would divide opinion but I’d be open to the idea of rescuing him from that toxic club if we are promoted so long as the fee was quite low.

He’d thrive in this VK team in the number 10 role.

Right, time to get the tin hat on. For some reason, some of our fans can be really unpleasant to Dwight, much like the Everton fans on there.

Everton are in big trouble this season, the fans were booing and groaning all game against Wolves, they weren't getting the ball forward quick enough, Tarkowski was one of the main culprits. Funny that the one time Tarkowski finally hits it long, they concede from the following counter attack.

Personally I'd love to see us pass Tarkowski on the way up, they were fortunate last season and after Tarkowski's interview about taking back his career, it would be a hilarious example of the grass ain't always greener. You should be grateful to be playing for a club like Burnley and liked by the fans.

I'm the biggest Dyche fan in the world but the impact he has had on McNeil is borderline criminal. Making him into a scared, defensive player.

I think Dwight should have a great career in the Premier League but what he needed after Dyche was a good manager to get him his mojo back. Instead he's got a crap manager who is only in the job because he was a good player. There's a serious chance from here he never becomes even the player he was when he first came into our team, never mind the player he could have been.

He has shown glimpses of quality at Everton, but his contribution in total has not been good. He might be lucky to keep his place once Townsend is fully fit

I would stay well clear of that toxic messageboard.

Thankfully most Everton fans are nothing like that.

Is it 2 goals and 2 assists in not so much playing time? If he got 6 and 6 it would be a very good season for him.

I'd trust the most hopeless poster on here before I'd listen to any Everton fans

They are a toxic fanbase that are great when things are good, but they turn terrifying quickly and have about as much grasp on reality as your average Russian Duma member

Henry Winter of The Times did an interview with Dwight over Xmas, which is pretty good and does rather suggest that he's happy there*

*I wouldn't read it if you think Marcus Rashford should stick to football mind!

I know a lot of Evertonians and they are all questioning why Lampard ever bought McNeil. If you don't get off to a good start at Goodison you have a very hard job turning the fans around, as Dwight will find out. What he needs is a great solo goal in the Merseyside derby to change his fortunes.
Tarks is doing OK but they are still leaking goals. Lampard should have signed Sir Benjamin Mee as well IMHO.

I’m not sure where to start with this. Firstly, I was very disappointed to see Dwight leave, but I understood and the money that was tabled was very good value for a relegated team.

I think my main concern is that at the time of leaving, I actually didn’t know what to expect of him as a player anymore. He wasn’t a winger and wasn’t playing as effectively when given a central role. Remember how well he played away at Crystal Palace when playing in the middle alongside Erik Pieters of all people? (We win 1-0…Ben Mee scored).

For me, my main reflection is this… When I think of Dwight at his best, I see him picking up the ball deep inside his own half and interchanging with Charlie Taylor, who also went through a phase of bombing on in those earlier day’s of Dwight’s senior career. It was exciting to watch: it got us up the pitch quickly and it made our left side look really threatening. His ball carrying was excellent and certainly offered enough Premier League pace.

But then Charlie Taylor picked up an injury, and Erik Pieters came into the side, and, as a result, Dwight‘s role appear to change. We hardly ever saw any overlapping runs from that day on and Dwight seemed to change as a player completely.

Now I don’t know if you can attribute that to the manager at the time or to his own mentality as a player, but something switched off when Charlie Taylor got injured.

Would I have Dwight back? Yes, absolutely. I think Vincent Kompany could work absolute wonders with him .

What Dwight needed was a year in the Championship with a coach like Kompany to get his confidence back. Instead he chose money and jumped ship at the first opportunity, no surprise he's fell flat on his face. People in football have no patience, they jump at the first chance with no consideration for the long term.

I fully agree, he needed a year down here to find himself again. I thought he would rip this league up in a more attacking setup, and likely post double digits for goals and assists (as the player within him IS capable of that, at this level - easily). You see the Indian summer that JBG is having with the shackles off and he's 32, you could easily see something similar with McNeil at only 23.

He's contracted to Everton I see until 2027, so whilst he will be an incredibly well off young man by the time that ends, if he does 'fail' at that club you do wonder what his career trajectory is. I wonder how much we wanted rid though to get a good fee in to your point of him bailing at the first chance, it may have been something Kompany/Pace wanted as much as the lad himself (particularly if Kompany knew he had Benny and Zaroury in the bag anyway).

I'd be shocked if we weren't pushing strongly to sell him once the offer came in. As said I think he's a top player but that fee covers Zaroury, Benson, Twine and Churlinov with change to spare.

Bet Pace couldn't believe his eyes when twenty million for McNeil dropped in his inbox. Overrated by Burnley fans, but you can't blame us for that, he was all the attacking intent we had for so long.

He'll be on loan at Celtic soon.

I have a strong suspicion that (with £20m on the table) he would be given essentially no choice in the matter.

We received £20m for McNeil, and we spent £20m on an brand new squad. I think (no disrespect to Dwight) that we got the better value for money.

There have been posts on here before that the £20m was a pay off to withdraw our complaint, which we did. I have no idea if there was any truth in it but he hasn’t been a £20m player for a long time. He was his first season+.

Honestly I suspect that Dwight ended up as part of the compensation negotiations between the clubs. Not worth £20 mill and seemingly not much interest from other clubs. I reckon it was a case of ‘OK we’ll give you £20 mill for McNeill if you agree to stop pursuing the FFP stuff’

This deal was Wayne Thomas on acid or whatever he was called when we sold him to Southampton for £1.5m.

Said to my Everton supporting mate we have had your pants down with this one.

Benson cost what? , £1.5m 😳

Nothing against the lad but that was an absolute genius bit of business by someone at the club.

I’d love Everton to fail. They think they are as big Liverpool or manure. They are absolutely deluded.

And I wouldn’t want McNeil back either. He lacks the one thing we use at every opportunity. Pace. As we all know, it’s needed massively at PL level, and he just doesn’t have it. He’s slower than a week in jail.

Had so much potential when he got his chance (I would like to use the phrase “broke into the side” but he only got near the first team due to injury) his natural instinct to attack with the ball caught many teams napping, but eventually that threat disappeared.

Some say it was coached out of him, some say his problems were in his own head. Whatever it was, he’s never realised the potential he showed in those opening ten or twelve games or so.

He got found out because he doesn't have a right foot, at all. Opposition players know that he is going to have to use his left which makes it easier to defend. Kompany seems to be finding players who can use both feet. That's why we cause so much trouble on the wings. The Rovers player was covering Zaroury's strongest foot and he whips in the best cross I have seen for years with his weakest.

Most of what the Everton fans were saying is true. He's not quick and so one-footed he's having to go backwards when pushed onto his right foot.
A 23 years old PL footballer that can only use one foot is pathetic. How it's been allowed to happen when he's been coached from being a kid at United and later at Burnley is beyond me. If he really wanted to though, I'm sure he could've spent extra hours on the training ground improving his right foot.
I prefer Zaroury and Benson who can go past defenders either side to one that is easily nullified.

I have said this often. Dwight is a poor player. He is one of the main reasons we got relegated. In a side with few creative slots if one is permanently occupied by someone who neither creates nor scores then you are in deep trouble. We were last year, now Everton are.

Would he have been ok in a VK side? Who knows but I think think all the replacements are better than Dwight. And as for the price difference it is almost scandalous.

He had a good 6 months is a very sound but unadventurous team. He stood out because we had no other creative players. But he is totally one sided… has no pace and apart from an occasional sharp turn no real trickery. Added to that he can’t shoot and rarely crosses… so for me I was delighted he went.

I just don't understand why some of our fans need to be quite derogatory towards our ex players or managers etc. Dwight had a really good 18 months or so for us after breaking into the first team and along with Heaton returning in the sticks was probably the biggest factor in staying up that 2018-19 season.
As time went on opposition teams did their homework more thoroughly and often put 2 or 3 players on him meaning that he had no other option but to go inside or backwards. Teams realised if they stifled Dwight they had a good chance of stopping us as he was our only creative player. This was an unbelievable amount of pressure for someone so young to handle in which his confidence and performances suffered greatly. Compare that to today when teams have Benson, Zaroury, Tella, Gudmonsson, Brownhill, even Maatsen, Vitinho or THB etc to create something out of nothing.
Saying all that I don't really miss him as I am not sure whether he would fit in this side or even where he would fit into this side. However I wish him nothing but the best for his future except when he plays us of course.

The comments are horrendous, but to be honest he was starting to stall here when running around in circles and cutting inside & running in to trouble. His main attribute was his wicked crosses. Had he stayed out wide and focussed on that he’d have done much better for us & would be delivering at Everton.

to be fair it's Everton fans, a more dis-likable toxic fan base you wont find. Just a shame they had Richarlison to bail them our last season

The idea that he wouldn't fit in here is as laughable as the claims that he was bought by Everton so we didn't sue them

Dwight was just incredibly inconsistent and struggled with confidence, he had Alexander Arnold on toast one week and then refused to take on his man the next :?

Technically a good player…

Too one footed, too one paced for the Premier League.

Some of the comments on here are absolutely clueless. Stick Zaroury or Benson out wide in a Dyche setup and see how successful they'd be. McNeil would have thrived in our current team and been one of our best players.

All three outfield players we sold for big money last summer have struggled.

I can see McNeil & Collins coming good under the right coaches, but Cornet always has the whiff of a one-season-wonder to me.

I liked him but we’ve moved on and so has he. The grass isn’t always greener unless your sole focus is money. We could pass some former players by if we go up but that’s life.
