To repeat my previous comment
I think a lot of people underestimate just how much McNeil did for us defensively.
Last season he was second in pressures and pretty high up in blocks, tackles and interceptions for us. For someone who was viewed as a creative player he got through a lot of defensive work.

I liked McNeil, always thought we were over reliant on him but this nonsense bumping a topic after 1 good game is cringe, shows how stupid and fickle football fans are, one great game and you’re an amazing player, one shocker and he’s crap.

He’s got 13 goal contributions in 33 games this season.
He also there top goal scorer.
Not exactly just one good game. He’s there player of the season and the reason they are going to stay up.

I will be made up if our wingers get 6 goals and 6 assists each next season.
Re: Dwight
I said he was crap last season, because he was. Properly bad. This season, especially since Dyche went there, he's been excellent. Looks quicker and stronger.

You'd be the mistaken one to claim he didn't put in similar efforts here.
His stats showed how hard he worked defensively, interceptions, tracking back etc whilst also being one of our main outlets.

Stats are for people with little else to do. Isaak for Newcastle beat half a dozen players on a mazy run that tore the opposition defence apart but was denied an assist on the stats because his final pass brushed a defender’s leg before his teammate put it in the net.GodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Mon May 08, 2023 8:20 pmYou'd be the mistaken one to claim he didn't put in similar efforts here.

I’ll believe my eyes , others can believe the stats.
Personally for anyone who went on the Turf last season and saw the half hearted performances from O’Neil and still says his performance tonight wasn’t any different I’d suggest getting glasses

Some stats are more useful than others, agreed. The point about the fact that Assists can undervalue a player's contribution is certainly relevant to a discussion about McNeil's contribution to Burnley last season, and your example of Isak is a good one.
But dismissing evidence out of hand in favour of unsubstantiated opinion - that's a different ball game.

Re: Dwight
In Dwight’s last season or so why did Sean turn him into a secondary full back by nullifying his runs forward by having him concentrate on defending which totally crushed his confidence. This season though since Sean arrived as manager why as he had him doing what he does best again, carrying the ball forward and taking his man on which has lifted his game to the level we know he can play at.

But that's the point Spice, if they can get it so wrong about something as important as an assist how can other less useful stats be taken seriously.claretspice wrote: ↑Mon May 08, 2023 8:59 pmSome stats are more useful than others, agreed. If you see a forward scoring and a player who should be marking him lagging behind him in the penalty box that surely should be enough to tell you that player is not doing enough. That was McNeil on more than one occasion last season

Re: Dwight
Played really well today - still not a massive fan of his and I don't think he'd suit our current system
He's a traditional wide midfielder rather than a sort of out and out winger but on his day can be effective.
Needs to be a bit more consistent, bit of an ott response on ere asthough he's the second coming of Bale or something

Re: Dwight
Last season's problem with McNeil had absolutely nothing to do with effort, and everything to do with him looking as poor as everyone else did in a season's worth of utterly dreadful team performances.
Unfortunately him having been good in the past made his decline stand out sharper against the general malaise that had been hanging over us for a season or so beforehand.
Anyone good enough to have stood out as genuinely good for us last season would have been too good to be playing for us. Hence they few who fit that category pretty much all stayed in the Premier League.

Dwight, works hard no matter what. Goals and assists are a bonus.
Rashford offers absolutely nothing to United and England if he’s not scoring goals. A left winger with his work rate is laughable.
I think Dwight is a bang average footballer with a solid left foot.

I enjoyed watching his two excellent goals on the highlights.
Love the all too rare sight of a footballer celebrating a goal before he puts it in the net!
Really hoping Dyche manages to keep them up. The signs are promising after today.

Dwight and Tom were the catalyst that started our recovery with the West Ham game. I have always rated him but thought in recent times he had been found out and did his 'Dwight turns' running backwards, so predictable and comic. So was last season his fault or the fault of the system he was expected to perform in?. What does this second attempt under Sean tell us?

Re: Dwight
What Dwight needed was failure, useful to all of us. He must have realised that working hard isn’t enough, he seems to have added 20% this season.
Super player, we got decent money so it is a win win. Very happy for him and for Dyche (not for Everton but one cannot have everything).

Re: Dwight
Very disappointed he didn't hammer it in from one yard or get down on his knees and head it in.
Re: Dwight
It's not really been one good game. He's played well for most of the season (and was one of our better players for multiple seasons).
This thread is full of people writing him off on, I think, the basis that he didn't single-handedly keep us up. I assume they'd watched him for multiple seasons and still thought he was a one-footed, championship level footballer who doesn't put the effort in which is the weird part

Re: Dwight
He was a player feeling the pressure last season. He had a rough start at Everton and was getting stick… a bit like he got here from fans only to keen to blast him. He’s come back strong; but unlike here where Dyche became an added weight, at Everton he has taken the pressure off. The system allows for Dwight to switch off out of possession a bit less obviously than it was here when teams were looking to exploit his lack of defensive awareness. He’s done brilliantly and may well be this seasons saviour for Everton.
Re: Dwight
Deary me.
Today, the day we lift the trophy somebody decides to insult a former players effort. A former player who was pivotal to an exceptional period in the clubs history.
Disgrace, and an insult to the lad, why his character is in question is frankly ridiculous. I might also add, as is the rubbish spouted about Dyche’s tenure and style of football under very testing constraints.
