Post by Hurstwood_Claret » Wed Dec 28, 2022 5:56 pm

If you had to create a combined eleven from the last two seasons who would feature?

For me, it would be
Manger : VK

Pope

Robberts
Beyer
THB
Mee (LB)

Cork
Cullen

Zaroury
Brownhill
Cornet

Jay

Weird question because we’re playing in a completely different way. But realistically VK would happily have pope, Tarks, Mee, Collins, cornet and maybe McNeil back…

Weghorst???? Other than a cameo for the Nederlands? A case of getting better with every game he doesn't play.

The sight of Nick Pope trying to follow VKs gameplan and spray accurate weighted passes around a pressurised back 4 would make my cat laugh.

After you'd read Manger, Ben Mee at left back and Robberts?

Fair play for keeping together for so long.

Current VK team.
None of last year would improve what we have based on the way we are playing. Collins at CB would be nearest.

Pope
Roberts Tarkowski THB Maatsen
--------------Cullen Cork
Cornet ------McNeil -----Zaroury
‐-----------------Wood

Manager: Kompany.

Mee vs THB is a concession to the style of football we are playing right now, but as a pure defender he's better than THB by yards - and I can absolutely see the argument for Collins ahead of either. Cullen likewise is ahead of Brownhill or Westwood because of how he suits Kompany’s style. Whilst Pope isn't as good a footballer as Muric, he's clearly so far the better keeper that he has to be selected.

Tarkowski, Cornet, McNeil and Wood though would all absolutely fit this team and this style and would improve it in those positions - there are some short memories when it comes to them. And the first reserve striker is Weghorst.

Cullen would have moved the ball on,whilst McNeil was thinking about, would have Tarks on the bench ,& bring Pope on after Muric had created 3 of our goals just to shore up the defence.

Benson is better and anybody leaving him out is watching a different game to the rest of us.
If anything you'd have Cornet up front.

Oh dear. Ben Mee did well in the Prem - THB is doing well in the Championship. You put THB in instead of Ben Mee!

Anyway........ it's opinions. My opinion is you don't take in what you watch.

Pope is a better GK than Muric overall, in this current side Muric is clear by an absolute distance, it's not even debatable. You simply cannot play this kind of football with Pope and Tarkowski in the team, it just isn't possible.

If you're picking Pope and Tarkowski, chose Dyche as the manager. You can't have it both ways.

I understand the point about Muric. I think in doing these combined teams you have to make some allowance for the fact its artificial.

Don't agree about Tarkowski though. Tarks was a good enough footballer to play this way if surrounded by players also capable of doing so and encouraged to do so. That's what he was known for at Brentford before he came to Burnley.

In this current side, Pope wipes the floor with muric. Popes “imagined” poor footwork is no reason to keep out the best keeper in the PL. The vast majority (95%+) of Murics play is a sideways pass so to suggest he’s a match winner because of his passing is bizarre. Pope can match that AND seize the ball in his own 6 yard box.

And Tarks is so far ahead of THB it’s ridiculous. The only question mark here is Mee or Beyer.

There will undoubtedly be those who struggle to separate, and to those I say pick either Tarks and Mee, or THB and Beyer.

I very much enjoy your reasoned and considered contributions to this board, really I do. You are one of the true assets of this message board. But to suggest that the footballing dinosaur that is Chris Wood would fit into this team and style is quite frankly, baffling. He quite literally wouldn’t know what was going on, where it was happening or why he was on the pitch. And neither would we.

For as good as we’ve been this season those two are streaks ahead.

Pope is better if the opposition fire more shots at us. He's not better if the keeper spends most of his time walking around as he's not better at coming out of his box and passing.

Nick Pope and Chris Wood both started in a 0-3 Premier League win for the team who are 3rd in the league, I'm really unsure why they're being totally written off by some. Which other Newcastle players do they not think would get in our team?

Chris wood started because Wilson was out injured. Don’t try to convince anyone on this message board he started because he’s a great footballer because we all know he isn’t.

He scored because he was given a free hit at goal, not because he carved a chance from nothing, or because he used skill/guile/pace to get himself into a scoring position.

There's a bit of a gap in my mind between a player who literally wouldn't know what to do if he was playing in the Championship and a player who plays in a dominant win for a team competing at the top of the Premier League. It was his third start and he's played in 15 of their 16 games. And they're third in the league above us.

But before I go….Yes you can. Stop talking ********. Actually, stop talking…

It's not just Muric's passing in this system, it's his ability to control the football in tight spaces and remain calm. I used to have mini heart attacks when the ball was played back to Pope, he'd take 3 touches just to get it under control.

I'm sorry but Pope cannot pass the football anywhere near the same as Muric.

and Pope is a better GK than Muric, there is no doubt about that. To play like we are, you need specific tools Pope doesn't have.

He's sh1t at football.
He can definitely Ping a ball.

For me i would have Pope in a heartbeat instead Muric. I am hoping though Muric might improve his catching and cming out for high balls. Tarks would be more than useful v Sheff U for example.

I think he'd know exactly what was happening, and would just head for the 6 yard box in order to score an absolute hat full from all the penalty box chances we create.

I also think Wood is generally misunderstood amongst Burnley fans. I think we'd play more to his strengths now than we ever did under Dyche. Under Dyche we needed the centre forward to hold the ball up and create then platform for our attacking moves cos we used long diagonals a lot. That didn't entirely suit Wood because that wasn't the strongest function of his game.

Now, we don't necessarily need a centre forward to play with his back to goal, or get involved especially in our link game. We need someone to make intelligent runs and use their physicality to occupy defenders and create the space for others to play through the thirds, and who can then get on the end of moves in the 6 yard box. Those are exactly the strengths of Wood so he'd fit in just fine.

Even if you think he was used by Dyche as in a jurassic role - although I don't think that's fair, personally- that certainly doesn't make him a dinosaur himself. His goalscoring record, at PL and Championship level, is outstanding.
