Today's footie 2/1

Post by tiger76 » Mon Jan 02, 2023 11:54 am

A packed card once more.

Brentford-Liverpool the one Prem game.

But Rangers-Celtic arguably the most important match of the day, Rangers victory and the title race might still be on, a Celtic victory though and it'll all be over bar the shouting.

Despite his late double at Aberdeen Scotty finds himself on the bench. Hart remains in goal for the visitors.

A number of games in the Championship besides our trip to Swansea, with several PO contenders meeting each other.

Barnsley-Bolton a tasty Roses clash in League 1.

Unfortunately can only see a Celtic win in the Old Firm game, Rangers have picked up results wise since Beale was appointed but the performances overall are poor and this Celtic team will be too much, hope I am wrong though.

Cmon rangers
Sort of can't really be arsed about 3rd world football ... but if Scotty Airfield scores it perks up the interests (slightly)

Can see in National League North Scarborough have an early game v Darlington, currently 0-0.

Looking at the table both are in promotion contention back to the National League, after checking where Darlington play these days after the stadium fiasco and Darlington returned back to the town in 2016 after £1,000,000 was raised by the supporters for upgrades an a local stadium.

Ironically if Darlington win promotion this season their current stadium will not match National League requirements.

Not too concerned with Brentford v Liverpool or the Glasgow derby but there are some interesting games in the Championship- in addition to our own.

Norwich v Watford - both teams been on a bit of a slide, a further defeat for one of them will dent their play-off hopes and a draw would be a disappointment to both I think- given a few upcoming rivals like WBA & Mbrough.

Hopefully QPR can find some of their early season form v Blades.

WBA v Reading 10th v 11th, both in decent form-especially the Baggies.

AS above, Barnsley v Bolton (4th v 7th) a good looking roses clash in League One

Typical of Celtic to pop up with a late goal, draw certainly suits them better than Rangers.

Interesting to see him playing on the left of a back 3 in the PL.
Weren't some people claiming he couldn't do that here 🤔

Own goal but looked like Ben Mee's goal, 1-0 Brentford.

What I liked from the goal and block by Ben Mee was the crowd with their "MEEEEE" chant, certainly seems a crowd favourite.

Listened to a Podcast with Ben Mee where he confirmed a contract was offered but the wage cut was significant.

He chose to leave as far as I’m aware. Fair play to him, has proved he’s still got the quality for the premier league.

Brentford are some side. Believe it or not there is only Ben Mee starting today who wasn’t with them in the Championship. Just shows what a quality manager and recruitment can do in the PL.

But it's whether VK felt he could play in the current system, likewise Pope and Tarkowski.

I suspect Mee probably wouldn't.

Yoane Wissa and Mathias Jorgensen both joined in the summer after they were promoted. But a great achievement nonetheless.

2-0 currently, Brentford had 2 disallowed goals and Liverpool also had 2 or 3 great chances. Going to be 2-0 at half time but could easily be 4-3, great half of football.

Only half watching Brentford vs Utd on Sky. Thought I had a stream on that was looping between 2-0 and 1-0.

I watched the Old Firm game earlier today. I'm always interested as I lived in Glasgow in the 90s and watched a lot of live Scottish football, including an Old Firm game or two. Got me to thinking what happened to the main Rangers chant of the time - 'Billy Boys'. Google informs me that it was banned by UEFA (also at Linfield) due to the inclusion of sectarian lyrics. I started reading the Rangers messageboards about the chant and came across this post that could have been written on here:

"No really half the wet wipes on this forum get offended by it anaw, prehistoric ect ect, %^*& them."

It's an interesting story, in that the tune itself is deemed sectarian, so the Rangers fans are unable to sing any version of the lyrics to it.
