Brownhill

Thought he was brilliant playing deeper in the second half. Personally think this is his best position. JBG comes in for Cork on Friday?

So was Cullen at Ballmouth.
All 3 are better in the deeper role where they have more time on the ball to pick their passes.
Cullen and Brownhill have more energy than Jack so VK has them where he needs them.

He was excellent second half - the space he found and the amount of times he linked up play. But not convinced it was the change of position that made the difference - everyone was off it in the first half and of course the conditions had a bearing on that.

Took on the roll of Jack Cork in the second half (al be it slightly higher) and always made himself available to gather the ball.

Another string on his arrow

Love how we are finding a way to win these tight games. Manure won many a title under Fergie by not being at their best but finding a way. Brownhill was excellent in the second half yesterday, and one of the reasons we nicked it.

Brownhill was excellent as you say because of the changes VK made, particularly the effect of Guddy's trusty left foot giving them plenty more to think about.
Add Tella's pace, causing them to drop deeper and it's a different game.
Oh and the gale force wind and rain swirling behind us second half.

Big shout for Joshs goal saving tackle. Look at his starting position as Gyokeres bears down on Muric. With two other defenders back some wouldn’t have bothered chasing him down.

Can't really agree with this. Agree the conditions were terrible but that's taking away how good Coventry set up.
They were better than us first half because they stifled our passing out from the back game.
It wasn't until we moved Brownhill back and put JGB on that we could cope with them.

The last 3 league games we've been nowhere near our best, yet we've won all 3 by the odd goal, that's what makes Champions come the end of the season.

Brownhill's tremendous tackle on Gyokeres was a real game changer, if that huge chance had gone in the 2nd half might not have panned out as it did, and after that Gyokeres was much quieter, whereas prior to that he was a constant menace.

Coventry were ok in the first half attacking into the JMc stand - we were better in the second half than they were in the first though. The fact that pretty much every single one of our players performed better in the second half suggests that the weather was a factor alongside the changes. I agree Brownhill and Gudmundsson were key to the victory.

He’s so much better when he’s in the thick of the action and has the game in front of him.

He will never be a ‘number 10’ as he doesn’t have the touch or vision for that role.

His tracking back for that poor Beyer back pass was great to see. To be fair 3 or 4 of the players got back like they life depended on it.

Brownhill's greatest strength is always going to be his running off the ball - not only the fact that is a very good athlete and genuinely quick, but also the fact that he reads the game well and so uses that speed and athleticism intelligently. That's valuable in covering defensively and in pressing opponents, but it's also valuable because he makes really intelligent supporting runs when we have the ball that create space for others and provide passing options - the classic "water carrier" role. He's perfectly decent on the ball and has a cracking shot on him, but that running ability is the area that he really stands out.

I think he's been doing that well as the most advanced of 3 central midfielders (it's not really been a "number 10" role, more a roving role) and that triumvirate with Cork and Cullen has been a huge strength this season. However, if he's playing as an "8" and so coming onto the play more, he can use his speed and intelligence to make really top drawer third man runs, coming onto the ball from deep. Assuming he plays there on Friday night, it will certainly be interesting to see how often he's given licence to make those runs, because they can certainly add an extra dimension to our attack against resolute opponents.

I posted recently regarding his interceptions. There was a stat about the number of interceptions he'd made. He can clearly read the game well and I don't think that's down to chance. It seems clear he'll be asked to play a deeper role on Friday - get JBG in as the number 10 and we're laughing.

Totally agree with this. TBH he's an all round central midfielder at top end Championship level. As you say, a fine athlete.

I think the quality of his running off the ball when we're in possession is a really underrated facet of his game and deserves a bit more recognition - he's been a lot more effective in that "roving 10" role than he's given credit for, for this reason.

But it will come into its own as an 8. The challenge for Kompany will be how to square the extra attacking running power with maintaining our security against counter-attacks - if Brownhill bombs on, as well as the full backs, that will just leave Cullen and the two centre halves to mind shop - unless whoever is at "10" is encouraged to drop in (just as Brownhill has been doing when Cullen steps forwards).

We may have an insight with Cork out.
Much as I doubt this will happen I'm hoping (at least interested to see) that Twine comes in as the furthest forward midfielder.

A home game with the crowd behind him, not the worst of suggestions. JBG has to start, but Twine coming on later in the game. Totally depends on how the game is going.

In this team Cork has to play in front of the back 4. He's 6 foot you know and the tallest on the squad excluding keepers the new cb and THB and a McNally, who VK clearly doesn't fancy atm.

He's been a very good player for us, and is having an excellent season.
Like many before him, he has suffered under SD, as the team ethos prevented him from showing all his qualities.
All of the players are growing under VKs coaching, and I hope, and expect, that Josh will continue to improve, and it sounds as if VK thinks the same.

I'm lost that people can call him out, and claim he is a top end championship player at best. I know we all have opinions, and I don't want to stifle free speech, but this is one of our own, we're supposed to be supporters, that means being supportive, not dismissive. Maybe it's just me, but I just don't understand it.

Makes sense to get him to sign a new deal if we can, and if as some claim JB isn't up to PL standard why are Leeds and West Ham expressing interest.

Doubt he'll join either of those clubs in this window anyway as there's every chance we'll be swapping places with one or both in a few months time.

I still harbour some doubt6s over whether Brownhill can nail down a regular PL starting berth, but under VK he appears like the rest of our squad to be enjoying his football again.

I guess it does raise the question do we cash in this summer if he won't pen a new contract? as we can ill afford to allow players to walk for nothing if possible.

It’s football, it’s all about opinions.

Definitely a player we need to tie down - you’d think that’s a formality after promotion. He never gives anything but his all. It doesn’t always come off for him, but he’s constantly involved and really ‘gets’ this club.

I very much remain in the unsure camp about Brownhill, particularly at the level above and especially where we are using him currently.

His contributions have been much improved (I’d expect them to in the Championship). I just think there’s something missing from his game to really own his current role long term - that isn’t to say that he hasn’t got qualities that are valuable.

There is though a world of difference between voicing an opinion about what a player brings to the team on a message board, than not supporting him when he’s wearing the shirt.

Class act is Josh. I hope he is given a rewarding contract to sign and he signs it.
Such a likeable player and his connection with his team mates and the crowd are first rate.
Not a bad player into the bargain and still remember him bossing one or two PL games against top sides at the Turf. Liverpool comes to mind if my memory serves me right

It’s football, it’s all about opinions.

It would be a boring place if everyone agreed.

Totally agree it would be boring if we all had the same opinions but, surely, even you can see how good a plyer he has been this season? Add to the fact other PL clubs want him tends to point to the opinion he's a PL player.

Be a handy squad player to have but I hope he isn’t given too large a contract (in terms of salary). I hope he is not a starter next season.

Brownhill has had a steady season, and he's worth his place in the team, with his best attribute being his pressing, however, He does sometimes lose his composure as he's constantly going at 100mph which lets his passing down, and we all know that with a dead ball, he's no Kevin Hird.
As mentioned, he does well at championship level, but there's a massive question mark over whether he is good enough for the premier League. If Leeds & West Ham are interested (which I doubt) then I'd cash in and trust Vinny to replace him with an upgrade.

Kompany could probably sign two better players for the 10m we would probs get.

I haven't a problem with people having a different opinion, I just feel sometimes the descriptions are ott, especially when talking about our own players. There are ways of expressing ourselves without resorting to slagging .

And the lesson to all new signings is that when Newcastle holds that piece of cardboard up asking for a shirt and it’s got your name on make sure you fulfill his request.

Failure to do so will result in a campaign which will run the length of your time here criticising everything you do.

Why would I want a players shirt that I don’t rate? Your logic is stupid

You rated him for a bit though

Maybe you wanted his shirt after this performance?

Tbh he remind me of Defour.

A bit of a metronome in the middle of the park. He just kept the ball moving for us

Think they call it jilted child syndrome

Bit like when you like a girl and she says no then you tell everyone non stop how much you dislike her anyway.

This board is so strange. The only place you will ever get grief for not rating a player.
