First appearance for Weghorst, first time United fail to win for ten games. Knocked 500k off his value already!!
They were winning when he was subbed. Ten Hag OUT!

I think most United fans will be underwhelmed, although hopefully they’re not daft enough to write him off after 70 minutes of football.

You have to remember they are used to watching Martial wander around as if he can't be arsed

It looked like he was asked to play pretty much a conventional centre forward for positioning but more play on the ground. I thought he was OK, some nice lay offs, a bit of pressing and a not quite good enough header on goal. The outstanding piece of work he did was for the goal when he moved towards the near post taking two players with him so creating space for Fernandes. Without that there would have been much less chance of the goal.

He did a similar thing for a Rodriguez goal in the 3-2 win against Everton last season. See from 0210 onwards:

You know how some people really hate the word moist, well Weggy does that for me (as in, I hate the word, not that Wout Weghorst the man makes me moist), but as a meme I love it.

Weggy boot

I thought if the defender made a genuine attempt to play the ball which in this case he did you couldn’t be adjudged offside even if you were standing in an offside position ? Am I wrong?

Weghorst looked lively in that 1st half, and unlucky not to have an assist to his name.

Change in offside

IFAB, football's law-making body, has clarified the offside rule, explaining what constitutes defending players "deliberately playing" the ball.

Though Law 11 (offside) has not explicitly changed, the new guidelines make clear that an attacking player who is offside will not automatically become onside upon a defender touching the ball, unless it was a save.

Though Law 11 has not explicitly changed, the new guidelines make clear an offside player will not automatically become onside upon a defender touching the ball.

"'Deliberate play' is when a player has control of the ball with the possibility of passing the ball to a team-mate, gaining possession of the ball, or clearing the ball," IFAB's clarified guidelines state.

"If the pass, attempt to gain possession or clearance by the player in control of the ball is inaccurate or unsuccessful, this does not negate the fact that the player 'deliberately played' the ball."

In addition, IFAB provides these indicators as to when a player "deliberately played" the ball:

- The ball had travelled from distance and the players had a clear view of it
- The ball was not moving quickly
- The direction of the ball was not unexpected
- The player had time to coordinate their body movement
- A ball moving on the ground is easier to play than a ball in the air

Too open to variable interpretation this!

On reflection I think it will become clear. If by season end Weggy’s half term report isn’t better than average then if he hasn’t done it in United’s front line he won’t do it in ours

Ideally he bags a couple in the final, not a bad beginning to his Utd career is it a visit to Wembley after only a few weeks.

Not at all, he’s landed on Tiger. Without doing much to earn it, he’s in a major final which of course will be where he feels he deserves to be.

I’d be shocked if United don’t pay €10m (the fee agreed with Besiktas) in summer even if he’s not prolific - pocket change to them and ETH will no doubt feel a sense of gratitude towards him - but if he hits scoring form we might get more!

Weghorst coming in for plenty of flak on the beeb comments today mind you he's not alone.

I don’t want to be mean, but I’m really struggling to see the point of Weghorst at United. He lumbers around upfront and United give him no crosses. As a fan, you are just waiting for him to come off so United can play some better football.

Some awful awful performances that first half. Dalot, Maguire and Bruno especially culpable. Weghorst anonymous as usual. Despite how poor we've been Bruno should've put us in front.

Am I alone in thinking that Weghorst is useless? No pace, and for a big man wins fewer headers than Fred? Surely he has to go off and Rashford go in at centre forward

He’s being asked to do all of his work about 30 yards into his own half though such has been Man Utds ineptitude at getting the ball from back to front.

Completely agree with this. He’s doing the dirty work and allowing the obvious quality around him to shine. ETH knows what he’s doing.

It's as if the rest of the United lads also think he's shite and just don't pass or bring him into the game,in the games I've watched United i don't think I've seen one cross played to the useless lump.

Yes that appears to be the role the manager wants him to fulfil, unfortunately doing the hard graft often goes unnoticed by fans,

That assist for Weghorst might quieten the noise around him but somehow I doubt it.

If you're expecting him to get on the end of crosses then you neither understand him as a footballer, nor his manager, nor his role at Man U.
He's Dutch, his manager is Dutch. They aren't coached or developed to play that way.

People have to realise that, like Crouch, he is not the 'big lump' centre forward of old but a quite gifted footballer with quality feet and a good brain. His off the ball movement, lay-offs under pressure and general pressing is very good. You have to play to his strengths to get the best from him. Just bunging in crosses at him isn't going to work.

Oh, right.
And there's me thinking that with Wood gone we signed him to score goals.
And United too.
Silly me, I didn't realise both clubs wanted a presser and a layer-offer.
But at 6ft 6", and playing in the centre up front, one could be forgiven for thinking that " bunging in crosses" might produce a goal or two.
