6 Nations 2023

Post by tiger76 » Wed Jan 18, 2023 10:42 am

Fast approaching that time of year once more and the squads have now been named.

England https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/rugby-union/64287374

Francehttps://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/rugby-union/64311663

Scotlandhttps://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/rugby-union/64306112

Waleshttps://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/rugby-union/64301116

No word on Ireland or Italy's squads yet.

France must be strong favourites, however like all the nations they've been impacted by injuries.

I think the Irish will give Sexton as much time as thy can before releasing their squad .

Have to fancy the French i would say but it will be a massive game at Lansdowne between then and Ireland .

Yeah, I think the winner of Ireland v France will have a good shot at winning the championship. World Cup year too, so time to start finding some form.

AS per usual I'm really looking forward to this competition. Kicks off 4th Feb with Wales v Ireland at 14.15 then England v Scotland 16.45. Its always difficult to predict with only a limited number of games and not having equal home and away fixtures; often depends on which of the favourite teams has the other at home.

Considering France and Ireland to be the two best teams- that clash is in Ireland in the second round of games. Ireland also have England (3rd favourites) at home whilst France have England away. Hence, Ireland are bookies favourites.

Each year I enjoy doing the Guinness sponsored 6-nations fantasy game. Probably not enough interest on this board to get a league going but if anybody else is interested, I can set something up (no great effort as people just need to register in the league as per the Fantasy Footy competition run on here and all the scoring is automatic).

In case there's any interest, I'll do a reminder when the game is set up (presumably a day or two after the last squad is named) https://fantasy.sixnationsrugby.com/#/welcome

Following Munster I’ve been regularly impressed with Ben Healy. Surprised Ireland didn’t cap him unless they didn’t know of his option to play for Scotland, which he has taken.
Leaving Munster for Edinburgh next season, he’s been behind Joey Carberry for too long.

The game in the lower levels is being turned into a farce with the new law of no tackles above waist height...What a joke ...

Agreed. Why do they think that it is safer? Let's get the tackling players head down in amongst the tacklees legs. That's a decent recipe for players getting kicked in the head.

It's absolutely disgraceful - a unilateral decision, made by out of touch people who have mismanaged the game for far, far too long. I really do believe this will be the death knell for Rugby Union IF they stick with it and the RFL must be rubbing their hands in glee! Twice in the last 3 years the RFU have managed to show themselves up against the RFL - first by delaying the return after Covid and now this. They also managed to send many, many kids into the clutches of football whilst they were able to play and train and we were left waiting to do full contact and anything vaguely approaching actual Rugby Union.

Their statement yesterday was not an 'apology' as the headlines made out. It was a snivelling justification for their outrageous decision, that simply recognised the fact they needed to explain the imposition of their new rules on us. the coaches at grass roots level, rather than consider alternatives. if this becomes written into the laws of the game then, sadly, my son is probably in the twilight of his Rugby Union career. He is 12.

I've set one up, been doing this for the past 4/5 years with just 2-4 others but the more the merrier as far as I'm concerned as the system does all the scoring and no work involved on my part. The official invite is below. Ive already got a placer team in there but will obviously change that when squads/teams are announced for round 1 on Thursday/Friday.
No money involved - although I recall there may be some prizes if you top the national league (and that involves beating tens of thousands of others).
Rules are at https://fantasy.sixnationsrugby.com/#/game/regles
Scoring is more involved than the fantasy footy as there are points for tackles/line breaks etc as well as tries/kicks.
Max of 4 players per team and you can change teams completely between each gameweek (keeping within allowed "spend")
Players get team points as well as individual points so always good to have 4 from the teams you think will win the three games each round.
Having palyed a few times, I can give some tips on how to approach selection if necessary.

OK only a few days away so
First up Wales v Ireland , have to stick with form here even if Gatland is back again so going for the Irish by 10 points
England v Scotland , going to be very close this one not sure about England at all new Coach but has he got new ideas , England by 3 points .
Italy v France , The French are the team to beat for me so will run out 35 point winners .

Final table

France
Ireland
Wales
England
Italy
Scotland

Wales have already named their team/subs for Saturday. I think the other Saturday teams (Ireland,, England, Scotland) will be listed on Thursday late morning with maybe a wait to Friday to get the France/ Italy details for the Sunday game.

Wales team is very experienced with even Halfpenny returning at 15. Should be a good test for Ireland in Cardiff.

15. Leigh Halfpenny, 14. Josh Adams, 13. George North, 12. Joe Hawkins, 11. Rio Dyer, 10. Dan Biggar, 9. Tomos Williams; 1. Gareth Thomas, 2. Ken Owens (capt), 3. Tomas Francis, 4. Adam Beard, 5. Alun Wyn Jones, 6. Jac Morgan, 7. Justin Tipuric, 8. Taulupe Faletau.

Replacements: 16. Scott Baldwin, 17. Rhys Carre, 18. Dillon Lewis, 19. Dafydd Jenkins, 20. Tommy Reffell, 21. Rhys Webb, 22. Owen Williams, 23. Alex Cuthbert.

All the Saturday matchday squads are named now. Wales already made one change to the team above as Halfpenny is injured, replaced by Liam Williams.

England stay with Smith 10, Farrell 12 but bring in rising star Hassel-Collins on the wing at least:
F Steward; M Malins, J Marchant, O Farrell (c), O Hassell-Collins; M Smith, J van Poortvliet; E Genge, J George, K Sinckler, M Itoje, O Chessum, L Ludlam, B Curry, A Dombrandt.
Replacements J Walker, M Vunipola, D Cole, N Isiekwe, B Earl, B Youngs, O Lawrence, A Watson.

Ireland have Furlong out but a very decent pack anyway and the very good Leinster 9/10 combination of Gibson-Park & Sexton.
Keenan; Hansen, Ringrose, McCloskey, Lowe; Sexton, Gibson-Park; Porter, Sheehan, Bealham; Beirne, Ryan; O'Mahony, Van der Flier, Doris.
Replacements: Herring, Healy, O'Toole, Henderson, Conan, Murray, Byrne, Aki.

I think Wales will give Ireland a good game but expect Ireland to get the win
Hopefully home advantage will help England beat Scotland but England will need to up their game from autumn 2022 levels to overturn the recent run of poor results v Scotland.

My predictions for the 1st round of fixtures probably totally wrong but here goes.

Wales-Ireland-Ireland to win a tight encounter by 5-7 points, home advantage will help Wales but Ireland on a roll presently and will be looking to justify their number 1 ranking.

England-Scotland-again I predict a narrow away win, England will be under severe pressure due to their recent dire run, and Scotland generally raise their game against the auld enemy, plus they've won the last 2 meetings so any inferiority complex should be well and truly behind them.

Italy-France-again an away victory Italy have improved including their Autumn success over Australia, but France will want to ensure they start World Cup year in style as they prepare to host the tournament.

Italy & France matchday players named earlier today https://www.sixnationsrugby.com/2023/02 ... -v-france/

Got three entries logged so far in the league identified above & my son still to bung a team in - so we'll have 4 at least competing in our league.

If you haven't played before, a couple of take-outs Id suggest....

You can completely change teams between rounds so pick just for the round coming up each time.

Supersub is well worth thinking about- you get 3X his points but only if he is a none starter and actually comes on as sub- so you probably want one of the benched front-rows (or maybe a 9) who will likely be entering the fray earlyish in 2nd half for a dominant team.

Other subs you dont necessarily need - you only get half their points. If you've spend left for one (or even two) thats fine but no big deal if you've spent all your allowance on the other 16 players.

Dont forget to pick a captain for the double points.

Before the games take place, you can't see how your league competitors' teams are made up but you can when games are finished (so after Wales v Ireland on Saturday you'll be able to see how each team has scored so far and who they picked in that game).

The scoring during the game is pretty up-to-date (though some small modifications after the end) - so you can, say, check at half time how you're going v competitors.

There'll be some fairly decent stats on the site for each player after the first round of games so you'll be a bit better informed for subsequent rounds.

27-3 Ireland at HT, Wales have had their chances, but unlike Ireland haven't been clinical when it mattered.

BP try for Ireland to seal victory, 2nd half has been much more even, however Ireland did most of the damage 1st half.

34-10 in the closing minutes.

Ireland played really well there, very clinical on taking their chances. It did help that Wales were v poor first half but at least they made a game of it 2nd half. Very big win for Ireland. I hope the home team in this next match start better than Wales did.

Stunning score by Scotland through van der Merwe a solo score from halfway and beating several England defenders.

The commentators will big it up, but it resulted from some utterly abject 3rd rate or non-existent tackling.

Tight scoreline yes.

England in actuality almost totally dominant yet wasteful. Scotland looking for a smash and grab...as per.

A lot of work for Kevin Sinfield to do; leaking 29 points at home to a team that isn't one of the two favourites for the 6N is poor. At least England got 3 tries this time out but that's no good if the defence is sloppy.

Deserved victory for Scotland, England had most of the possession, however they struggled to convert that into points.

Borthwick will be given time but results do need to improve pronto.

Hopefully that's the last we see of Farrell in an England shirt .... out of position, anonymous, a yellow card waiting to happen, and missed some crucial kicks !
I had the usual feeling of dread when Youngs entered proceedings, his habit of picking up the ball at a ruck, taking one step, then another and then passing kills England's advantage whenever they get quick ball ...

Italy have upset France a few times in the past but I cant really see them holding France off for 80 minutes. Could be a relatively tight first 40 but I think France will overwhelm Italy in the second with their strength in depth.
I hope there are a few tries and Italy's Capuozzo gets a few runs with the ball- he's great to watch.

France win a thriller 29-24, great effort from Italy who are rapidly improving.

Italy played very well there, France hanging on right at the end.

France have lots of excellent players but played far to passively there, need to improve a lot when they go to Dublin next week or they'll be.
demolished.
Likewise England will need to improve when they take on Italy next week or they'll be losing their 100% record v Italy.

Ok onto week 2 .
So first up Ireland v France , going to be some game not for the faint hearted so with that in mind going with my heart 24 -17 to Ireland .
Wales v Scotland , now after last week can only see one winner here and the Scots to come out on top by 12 points .
England v Italy , look Italy did ever so well last week and lost can see the English getting into gear and running out 27 points winners

Saturday start XVs and replacements were announced today. Eng, Italy teams for Sunday should be announced tomorrow.

I think France will improve on last weeks effort v Italy but I fancy Ireland will win a close contest.
Wales have ditched a lot of the old guard and Id expect Scotland to win this one by 11-15 points at least.

See what 23 England name for the game v Italy before making any predictions on that. Hopefully Borthwick picks 1 fly half and 2 centres for this rather than 2 fly halves and 1 centre to play 10,12,13. Dont mind whether fly half is Smith or Farrell but please no Farrell at centre. Hopefully much less aimless kicking away of possession also.

I like this round's England team much better than last week; actually playing two centres and players in their usual specialist positions. Decent bench too, I fancy a win by 11-15 for the home team maybe more if we refrain from aimles kicks up the park for Capuozzo to run back.

Get my fantasy team sorted before 14.15 now we have all the sides. As usual, I'm looking forward to all three games, Ireland v France especially.

Italy 15.Capuozzo; 14.Padovani, 13. Brex, 12. Morisi, 11. Menoncello; 10. T Allan, 9. Varney; 1. Fischetti, 2. Nicotera, 3. Riccioni; 4. N Cannone, 5.Ruzza; 6. Negri, 7. Lamaro (capt), 8. L Cannone
Replacements 16. Bigi, 17. Zani, 18. Ferrari, 19. Iachizzi, 20. Polledri, 21. Zuliani, 22. Fusco, 23. Bruno.

England 15.Steward; 14.Malins 13. Slade 12.Lawrence 11. Hassell-Collins; 10. Farrell (Captain) 9. van Poortvliet; 1.Genge 2. George 3. Sinckler 4. Itoje 5.Chessum 6. Ludlam 7. Willis 8. Dombrandt.
Replacements 16. Walker 17. Vunipola 18. Cole 19. Isiekwe 20. Earl 21. Mitchell 22. M Smith 23. Arundell.

Ireland-France is a tough one to call, go for Ireland to edge it due to home advantage, 4-5 point for them.

Scotland-Wales, hmm! Scotland are heavy favourites which doesn't generally suit them, however they way they played at Twickenham suggests they'll have enough to overcome a Wales team still in transition, Scotland to win by 10-12 points.

England-Italy, England really need a convincing victory, they should win, but Italy displayed plenty last week to show they'll be no pushovers, England to win by 8-12 points.
