Selling a road bike
Anyone got any experience or knowledge on how best to sell a decent road bike?
Bought during lockdown but couldn’t find the time to get out on it last year.
Would like to avoid the hassle/horror stories of selling on Facebook etc.
Do any local bike shops buy used bikes or has anyone used an online site?
Thanks

Re: Selling a road bike
It depends on the make and spec. If sought after, a local specialist bike shop may well be interested in it.
Other than that, Facebook cycling groups or eBay are as good as anything.

We’ve used Gumtree several times and found it worked for us. You could try local independent bike shops but be prepared for a figure a lot less than you’re expecting, you never know though you might get lucky. You’ve probably a good chance of selling it if you’re prepared to advertise it at a tempting price, bearing in mind the competition, sometimes it’s worth taking a hit just to get rid of it.
Re: Selling a road bike
It's probably worth having a chat with some of the knowledgeable staff in your local bike shop. Even if they don't trade in used bikes, they'll have a feel for the best channels, depending on the model/age. (Out of interest - what is it?)
You said decent, so I assume you want market rate. Selling via eBay is more likely to reach a broader audience than Facebook Marketplace.
I've moved a couple of things for cheap/free on Facebook, but there are a lot of timewasters. Your mileage may vary.

Re: Selling a road bike
Local facebook cycling groups if its a good one to be honest
Certainly worth putting it out there if you are not going to use it, but I'd say hang on to it till the weather improves and you may use it a lot more
I haven't used mine for a month, but can't wait for the weather to improve so I can out and about and lose my Xmas pounds!

Would prefer the experience of selling to a shop

Just price it reasonably, the market is saturated.

Re: Selling a road bike
That’s interesting as not too long ago there was a shortage due to factories hit by COVID. I looked at ordering a Ribble bike in July 2021 but the delivery time was nearly six months so I didn’t bother. Has the market swung the other way now?

Re: Selling a road bike
There’s bikes & there’s bikes you are looking at a very small minority who want to pay silly money for a bike, 9/10 people I should imagine are comfortable with buying budget bikes which more than meets their needs & that’s where the mass market will be especially in this economic climate.ClaretLoup wrote: ↑Sun Jan 22, 2023 9:42 pmThat’s interesting as not too long ago there was a shortage due to factories hit by COVID. Re: Selling a road bike
It seems to have done in the mountain bike world. It was nigh on impossible to get a new bike in the last couple of years, but now there’s decent sales on surplus stock.ClaretLoup wrote: ↑Sun Jan 22, 2023 9:42 pmThat’s interesting as not too long ago there was a shortage due to factories hit by COVID. Re: Selling a road bike
It doesn't surprise me stock being low in peak summer cycling is seasonally very slow in winter with people preferring to stop indoors & finding other modes of commute with the snow & ice about.ClaretLoup wrote: ↑Sun Jan 22, 2023 9:42 pmThat’s interesting as not too long ago there was a shortage due to factories hit by COVID. Re: Selling a road bike
No I think there’s still supply issues with good quality carbon and so that has a knock on affect to the market. There’s still the lockdown tax added which has inflated prices. I can’t see that ever coming off and prices levelling out to pre lockdown.ClaretLoup wrote: ↑Sun Jan 22, 2023 9:42 pmThat’s interesting as not too long ago there was a shortage due to factories hit by COVID. The second hand market is saturated because of the boom lockdown years and people now shipping bikes off to free up cash. The £750 -£2000 market is a busy place. Things aren’t moving because people aren’t willing to take a significant loss on a bike they feel has limited miles on.
It’s most certainly a buyers market in my opinion.

Re: Selling a road bike
Wait until the weather starts getting better. That'll be when the market is at its highest.
