John Connelly song
I was having a conversation with a utd fan recently and John Connelly came into the conversation. He could remember a song at utd, “John Connelly, John Connelly, the winger to watch” based on a tv advert “John Collier, John Collier, the window to watch”. John Collier was a tailors, like Burtons.
Now although I can remember the original advert, I’m not sure whether we sang the song at Burnley. I think we did, but hopefully someone on here will confirm it.

Re: John Connelly song
Aye, we originated the chant long before he left for Man Utd in '64. Probably around '60/'61.

Don’t think the singing and chanting came in until after JC had left.
Willie Morgan and Willie Irvine were the first two I can recall.

Singing wasn't invented until 1953 but it was banned at football matches until the repeal act of 1962 came in.

Re: John Connelly song
I drew a blank searching for the 'John Collier, John Collier, the window to watch', so here's another catchy jingle instead, though I don't recall it ever morphing into a footy chant.

About the same time, Harry Worth used to stand at the corner of a window and lifted an arm and a leg up.
The reflection in the window mode him look like he was floating.
You have had to seen it to understand !

Me and my eight year old were doing that in the mirrors at clothes shops yesterday as we waited for my wife to ‘have a quick look round’. It’s a classic!Nonayforever wrote: ↑Sun Jan 29, 2023 8:46 pmAbout the same time, Harry Worth used to stand at the corner of a window and lifted an arm and a leg up.

Used to do that as a kid but grew out it. Now I’m 70 and entering my second childhood it’s probably time to give it another go

Re: John Connelly song
When i saw this i had to play it, in the 70s i rember the advert and that on a holiday in devon my father had been in the sea near a sewage outletand was quite ill, one oth things that happened was he was delirious for several hrs shouting out hold me down hold me down, when he was better Mum asked him what he could remember and stupidly he replied hot air ballon , mum went ballastic accusing him of fanatasing about the young woman on the advert. for several years if i wanted to get him in trouble all i had to do was sing out the line ''she flies like a bird'' and mum gave him crap all over again.cricketfield73 wrote: ↑Sun Jan 29, 2023 8:13 pmI drew a blank searching for the 'John Collier, John Collier, the window to watch', so here's another catchy jingle instead, though I don't recall it ever morphing into a footy chant.

Football fans were singing long before the 1960’s, but most think it was around then because of the TV exposure.Tricky Trevor wrote: ↑Sun Jan 29, 2023 7:45 pmDon’t think the singing and chanting came in until after JC had left.

Then beat Tottenham before going out in the most contentious manner to Man Utd.

I knew the traditional ones Pompey chimes, Brums Keep Right On Til The End Of The Road and WHU Forever Blowing Bubbles but I started going on in early ‘62 and can’t remember any organised mass singing before the two I mentioned above in about’64.Claretforever wrote: ↑Mon Jan 30, 2023 3:56 pmFootball fans were singing long before the 1960’s, but most think it was around then because of the TV exposure.

What a coincidence. Just found this on Facebook from A Swedish follower. Reportedly as being from the Burnley Express in 1952. His query was regarding the first use of Up The Clarets.Claretforever wrote: ↑Mon Jan 30, 2023 3:56 pmFootball fans were singing long before the 1960’s, but most think it was around then because of the TV exposure.

But, just for Claretforever, to go back to 1908/09.Royboyclaret wrote: ↑Mon Jan 30, 2023 4:54 pmWe won the replay 9-0 on the Turf.

Grandad maintained, 'til the day he left this earth, that we were robbed in the FA Cup that year.
The original game against Man Utd was abandoned after 72 minutes on the Turf, but Grandad always said conditions were no worse at that point than they were at kick-off. We were leading 1-0 at the time of the abandonement.......skullduggery perhaps ?
Anyway we lose the re-arranged game 2-3 and depart the FA Cup for another season.

Royboyclaret - from what you say there, it sounds like you were actually there at Maine Road to see us win the league.
