For a big lad he’s very good with his feet so maybe second choice keeper if BPF leaves.😉

Weghorst is a professional footballer who quite rightly wants to play at the very top. He moved out on loan to preserve his ambition to play for his country in the World Cup (you can’t get any higher than that) and he could not see himself getting that chance in the second tier of English football.

He came across as arrogant when he was with us, but there are many top, top successful footballers with a high self regard in their own ability that are far worse. It’s the nature of the beast and naturally he was upset when left out/subbed in a team scrapping for survival - he could see his ambitions fading away.

I personally would like to see him back playing for us in the Premier League under Vincent Kompany and I think that he would be content with that. That is of course provided that he can win back the support of the Clarets fans (like Granit Xhaka has done at Arsenal).

I do however believe that a (low fee) deal has already been struck for Weghorst to remain at ManU under the guidance of (fellow countryman) Erik ten Hag who is an admirer of his style of play.

I think he would be perfect for our style of play. I know it is unlikely but I’d love him to play for us next season.

I would be interested to know what you think Weghorst would add to the team and how he would enhance our "style of play".

100% agree in both that he would be perfect for us and that its unlikely to happen. The role Barnes is currently being asked to play is perfect for Weghorst in terms of coming deep to collect the ball with runners going past him.

His close control, awareness, vision and passing range is exactly what is required in the false number 9 role VK adopts and I think Weghorst would be far better then both Jay and Barnes in this role next season.

Everything Barnes does but significantly better.
Better technique
Better pressing
Better passing and link up play
Equal finishing ability, don't let his recent record fool you he has goals in him.
Couple of years younger.

He'd play the nine and a half role for us that Barnes and Jay have done this season, and would be ideal for it.
Wouldn't hesitate to have him back.

Presumably he'd do the same job that he is doing successfully at Man U.
Tella, Xaroury etc would all thrive ( as Rashford is doing) in the space he creates and service he provides.

Agree with most of this - the only concern for me is his ego, will he really want to go from United to Burnley? Does he ‘fit in’ with the group mentality VK has created? Suggestions were made by the Athletic he clashed with a few in the dressing room while here. It’s an interesting one.

Whilst I'm not disagreeing with your overall argument, I must stick up for Barnes's passing ability.

Did his best work for us in a deep role, on the half way line wriggling out of tackles somehow and laying the ball off with quality. Pressed from the front really well too.

Also he showed in the World Cup that he can scare the life out of top defenders at set pieces with his height - scoring those two last minute goals. I’m sure that he would be also very useful defending them at the other end, where we are still extremely vulnerable.

I wonder if Pace and co want him back, or whether they'd rather take a 31 year old (next season) off their books and bring in a couple of much younger players.

The idea that Weghorst would “lower” himself to play for us again having once played for Manchester United is a little far fetched. We weren’t good enough for him in the Championship and I doubt he considers us good enough even when we return to the EPL. Hopefully we can recover most of the few we paid and bring in a player or two who actually want to play for us.

The way he is playing for United coming deep for the ball, holding it up, leaving space for runners in behind him, and some of the quality touches and lay offs he is showing…..would actually suit our style perfectly.
He’s shown that he is a clever player with the positions he takes up on the pitch and how he can also take defenders with him leaving space for others.

But trust VK to decide whether he wants him back as he’s got to consider a whole range of factors including the wage he might have to pay him compared to the rest of our team…..for me I can’t see him playing for us again (mainly because I don’t think he wants to)

I'm sure he could come back and resume missing the chances he was missing for us, which he continues to miss for Man U.

Now if the PL drops to the standard of the Turkish pub league next season, he'd be in the team in an instant.

He's looked pretty crap so far for Man Utd. Quite a lot of people seem to be saying things like, "He brings a lot to the team other than goals" or, "He's a different type of player" or even, "He runs around a lot". Suspect there's a bit of silk purse/sow's ear here. He doesn't look like scoring; he's missed some easy chances; he flatters to deceive. Exactly how he looked for us, just because he's now doing it in a Man Utd shirt doesn't instantly make him any better.

Flog him to another team who will buy him for over the odds because he's been playing for Man Utd.

Get rid as soon as we can. He’s proved in 2 separate PL spells he’s not cut out as a PL striker. A good 20 minutes at a World Cup does not a great player make.

Sell him to a team in some farmers league where he can go back to bagging 1 in 2.

In my opinion, people seem to either vastly over- or under-rate Weghorst. I think he is 'quite good'. He can do a good job when it comes to linking up, holding up the ball, has good feet and can be a surprise package, as he was in the world cup.

However, it feels like too much has happened and repairing relationship with the fans will be a stretch. Some of his behaviour this season might be explained away as him thinking of his international career and being ambitious, rather than him being a fickle, back-stabbing, arrogant, Nicklas Bendtner of a man, but when it comes down to it, we will need togetherness and teamwork in the dogfight next year... Will he give us that?

Also, I have a feeling that being at Man United may open up some global offers for him, which might mean $$$. Would he even want to return to us?

According to Alan Pace we've already said "goodbye" to him, and the way written it wasn't a reference to his loan spell. It seems to me there is a new contract that none of us know about that has replaced the original contract.

I'm not convinced the do we keep him/how do we deploy him debate is one to be had tbh

Seems he’s divided the fan base. For me he’s a quality footballer and that’s now being realised at United.

Simply, if he’s not in that team, Rashford continues to struggle, Fred continues to be isolated and made to look stupid time and time again, and they get turned too quickly in transition and overloaded.

I think he will stay at United and as I originally predicted, will spell the end for Martial.

I think we can all agree that Marcus Rashford is the focal point for scoring in this post-World Cup Man Utd team. It makes sense then to understand player combinations with him. Weghorst only has 16 combined passes with him. Quite astonishing. Bruno has 144. However, he has far more playing minutes, so that needs to be evened at as the number of minutes that pass on average for a pass combo to occur

Shaw is 11 minutes
Martial is 12 minutes
Fred is 12 minutes
Bruno is 13 minutes
Weghorst is 27 minutes
Antony is 38 minutes

if Weghorst's function as a false 9 is to link play, ought he not have better stats than that with Rashford? It would be interesting to see them with United's wide men (to counter the argument that his function would be to feed them in order for them to feed Rashford)

I don't think he will want to come back, so that will probably decide it.
I do agree he would do much better in this side though, he's a clever footballer who finds space and links up well.

I cannot believe people think so little of him given his goalscoring record when at Wolfsburg. He came at the wrong time to us.

Of course he's a Burnley player.

From United's website:

'Manchester United is pleased to confirm that Wout Weghorst has joined the club on loan from Burnley until June 2023.'

Is Maatsen not a Chelsea player because he's on loan at us?

Much prefer Gyokeres from Coventry. Watched him yesterday against Wonderland and he looked sharp and scored.
McNally looked sound defensively but his distribution was a little off.

At 10 million he is chump change to Utd. They have several areas to improve and one is a centre forward, now if firing on all cylinders the striker can't play all the games, Ten Haag would trust Wout to come in and do a job, plus has the work ethic he wants. They aren't gonna splash out massive money on 2 strikers so Wout and a big marquee signing like Kane would suit Haag fine I feel. Doesnt matter what the media or fans think, its what Haag thinks, and him starting almost every game shows Haag wants him

Comments on here do make me laugh.

He may never kick a ball for us. He may not be in VK’s plans.

…but if you hold the two moves he’s engineered this season against him, you’re not thinking rationally. Those moves took him to the World Cup, a title challenge and now a major final at Wembley. Fair play to him.

Interesting, I’ve personally thought the opposite and they try and play off him when possible, as it generally leads to some good patterns of play.

Can’t blame Weghorst for the moves but are Man United seriously challenging for the title?
