The Middlesbrough math

Post by NRC » Sun Feb 26, 2023 4:32 pm

If they win all 12 they have 93 points. We need to win 6
If they win 11 from 12 they have 90 points. We need to win 5
If they win 10 from 12 they have 87 points. We need to win 4
If they win 9 from 12 they have 84 points. We need to win 3
If they win 8 from 12 they have 81 points. We need to win 2
If they win 7 from 12 they have 78 points. We need to win 1

Draws not included. Worst case, we need to win 50% of our remaining games. So far we have won 65%
Certainly puts some clarity onto it

The four more games from Robbo is to win in at Blackburn. Middlesbrough would have to lose in 3 of the next four for that to happen (I think)

I reckon two wins will be enough. If Boro average two points a game until the end of the season, which is normally considered promotion form, then they’re on 81 points. Two more wins takes us to 82.

Are we beating Fleetwood?

If the answer is yes then we aren't playing Blackburn on the 18th March.

Barring a Devon Loch style collapse, we must be more than a shoe in for promotion. We really need to finish as league winners to mark this wonderful season.

I don’t think they’ll maintain that, but even if they do it’s only an extra 2-3 points over 12 games, so three wins for us rather than two.

I normally fall on the pessimistic side, however even I have no doubt we are going up this year. Total focus for me is on the title and if / when we will win it. As someone who is away for the Sunderland home and boro away games, I can live with missing being officially promoted but I hope to high heaven I don’t miss us winning the title.

Only 8 more wins based on yesterdays performance? I do appreciate that Uddersield are gash, but if we play like we did yesterday, I reckon we win more than 8 regardless of the fact we have to play b******s and Boro away and Sheff U at home.

Does getting to the semifinal count as playing at Wembley in the traditional sense* because we've already played there just a few seasons ago against Spurs? ;)

It was a long time ago, but I believe the course was split into mechanics and statistics. However I distinctly remember a module in statistics where the tutor proved that a team with a 19 point gap to third position with just 12 games remaining were mathematically certain to win promotion. I’ll try and dig out my course notes.

I have a golden rule for these things which has never let me down - as soon as the word mathematically even enters the conversation, before it becomes factually true, it is in essence done.

Can anyone mathematically intelligent with 15 minutes to spare look at the fixtures and inform as to their best guess as to which match will be the most likely one that we win the title?

I was reading the other day that in the last 30 years the average points total for a 3rd place finish in the Championship was just under 83 and the highest 3rd place total was 90.

It’d be a surprise this season saw a 3rd placed team get the highest total in 30 years.

Last 10 years 3rd place points tally:

2021/22 = 82 (Huddersfield)
2020/21 = 87 (Brentford)
2019/20 = 81 (Brentford)
2018/19 = 83 (Leeds)
2017/18 = 88 (Fulham)
2016/17 = 85 (Reading)
2015/16 = 89 (Brighton)
2014/15 = 86 (Norwich)
2013/14 = 85 (Derby)
2012/13 = 77 (Watford)

Can’t see Boro getting a better tally than the best years from the above, so we’re looking at a maximum of 12 points required in my view.

If we beat Sheff U at home then we only need another 7 wins and a draw to guarantee being Champions. If we beat Middlesbrough then we only need 5 wins to be mathematically certain. However we only have 5 points spare if we are to beat Reading's point record
