Went many years ago , pleasant enough down by the souk/ ribat etc. a couple of trips el Djem and Dougga if your into roman ruins. Carthage is fragmented in a few places and not much to see. El Kantoui is nore lively, plenty to see in a week if that’s your thing. Remember it being a bit windy and warmer than here but not roasting given time of year

I went in 1962 to Sousse.
Never wanted to return!

Plagued by people wanting to sell you stuff, every yard of a walk.

EL Jem, Carthage, Dougga and the Star Wars tour.

Did a few nights in the Sahara and saw where Indiana Jones and some other film locations were filmed etc too which was good too.

I worked in Casablanca the odd week for around 5 years. Been about 20-25 times two big football clubs in Casablanca . Raja and Wydad they are football mad all the bars and cafes are full in the evenings when football is on, It gets exciting with people hanging out of cars with flags blowing horns when the national team is playing.
At club level its mainly Spanish games Barca or Real Madrid but I have watched Burnley a few times when we have been playing one of the big 6.
Ricks Bar is on the front near the harbour at the bottom of the Souk near the Medina wall, it's Ok the food is good, normally take customers there as you do. It's just a theme pub (well put together) playing the film Casablanca on repeat. The film wasn't made there, think it was at a UK studio and Malta

If you do go to Carthage, don't bother with the food. It's very over-salted.

I went to Sousse for New Year in 1982, with my girlfriend.

Pestered by locals continuously to sell my girlfriend for a couple of camels. Never thought of going to Tunisia again.

From Spike Milligan's "Monty: His Part In My Victory"...

"Approaching are Gunners Musselwhite, Roberts and Wilson, riding donkeys and stoned: days later they were found in Sousse with no recollection of anything. Up before Major Chater Jack, the answer to his question "What's your excuse?" was "P!ssed, Sir".

"Such honesty cannot go unrewarded," said Chater Jack, "case dismissed."

Went about 15 years ago with the kids. Didn't feel safe always looking over my shoulder, one guy on our flight was battered in front of his family on the street for being western. Wouldn't return.

On the beach in Sousse I saw this young lad looked about 11. He tried to rob a handbag while a woman was sunbathing and the security guard watching the hotels sunbeds really laid into him beating him up. Opened my eyes to the place.

Went there several times in the 90s teletext last minute holiday bargain days

All good fun,

Chanced upon a very Bohemian young couple shagging by the sunken pill box on the beach

She was on top

We were contemplating visiting a few years ago, but general enquiries of
friends and family indicated that we would probably not enjoy it.

So, we didn't bother going. We ignored similar advice about Luxor in Egypt
and regretted it every day we were there.

Just a bit of an update,
Hotels decent - Maharba Royal Salem , on the beach 3 swimming pools ( 1 inside )
Food is Good for an All Inclusive
Watched man city game in a local bar , taxi drove us around for half hour looking for a bar which had it on. (£5)
Had 10 bottles of becks Mrs had 3 vodka red bulls and we had food (£40)
Locals can be a pain in the arse ,most of them say they are the chef in hotel and 'know' us and will guide you around ( will then ask you for money) a polite fcuk off usually works

Basically so far so good 👍🏻

You will be pestered every step you take when out and about in town.all wanting to be your friend, but actually selling something,or willing to
be your guide, they are a bloody nuisance, and like midges,so annoying until you get angry when all you want to do is enjoy your holiday and a walk around town. There is a lot to like ,and i really hope you enjoy your stay.Sorry to be the bearer of this news, but i found the hustlers so annoying.
Tell them your a rovers supporter they will soon bugger off.

Yeah they can be annoying especially at the Medina (market) but we went with a guide and his helper ( a deaf and dumb lad ) who everyone seemed to know and also knew that we were with him . I can imagine what it would have been like without them !!!

Why do they do this? I’m guessing tourism is really important to the local economy but many people won’t go as they don’t want to be blagged for hours on end???
