9 games left, 4 wins needed

Post by Burnleyareback2 » Thu Mar 16, 2023 12:27 am

Reminds me of the commentary on the video when we won the 4th division and the game at York.

Just wish I could recall those words exactly- anyone got a better memory.

That was the 2nd most important Burnley game for me..

Go on, I'll bite.

Why 4 wins? What does that achieve?

Isn't it 3 wins for promotion? 5 to be champions?

Assuming the wins are not against either side.

Sorry not trying to get bites, genuine question- my maths (could be wrong) thought we needed 4.

Regardless - trying to remember the commentary ahead of York - without getting the vhs out of the loft!

I think the clip you are thinking of was filmed in the CFS prior to the Cardiff game.
The kids were asked to shout
"5 games left, 7 points needed, for the championship. Yeaaah".

8 more points and Middlesbrough can’t catch us even if they win every game

If Sheff Utd win every game we need 16 more to to be champions

Basically 3 more wins and we’re up, 5 and we’re guaranteed champions (if one of those 5 is against SU)

Correct. I had Boro game as the third game instead of the second

Edit: I’d also forgotten Luton could catch us😂

Luton & Middlesbrough still have to play each other, that’s in our favour. But that’s not till late April. Luton also have to play B4stards.

Win the next 2, we are up.

Yes, by my reckoning it's win the next 2 and we're certain to go up and that's because the second of those games is against Boro. If Boro lose both their games before they play us at The Riverside, a win against Sunderland would be enough for us, but we'd be relying on GD. I may be wrong here however.

Yes, it seems everyone is forgetting about them including me. They could still get to 90 points by winning all 9 games by my reckoning, so nothing a couple of scratchy draws won't cure.

So, if we win 4 more games we are up regardless of any other results but if we win the next two we are promoted anyway. If Boro lose their next two games and we beat Sunderland then we would be promoted after just one more win.

I think we will get it at Boro.

15 points I think. Sheffield Utd can get 97 points at most and we’re on 83. Five wins, but only four if one is against Sheffield Utd.

We’re only promoted if we win the next two if Luton drop points as well.

Burnley current 83pts

Sheffield utd max points 97
Boro max points. 91
Luton. “. “. 90
Blackburn “. “. 88
Millwall. “. “. 87
Norwich. “. “. 83

So it’s win 3 games for guaranteed promotion
And win 5 games for the championship

If that could be re-enacted, that would be great .... especially the bit where we take the lead after 14.5 seconds ( Robbie Painter ) !!

Think Robbie Painter will be in his early 50s now, I’m not sure he’ll even get from the halfway line to goal in 14.5 seconds.

Lets be honest, we're already up. I honestly think we'd still be ok if we lost every remaining game (not a theory I'd like to test out though!!).

If Boro and Luton continue at the average points per game they've had this season to date (1.73 Boro and 1.70 for Luton) then they'll end up on 80 and 78 points respectively. Even if they manage to pull in 2 points a game they'll only hit 82 and 81. It's highly unlikely either will achieve that given their run ins (Boro still have us, Luton, Norwich and Coventry. Luton still have Watford, Millwall, Boro and Rovers).

Promotion and the title are sewn up. It's simply a case of how many points we end up with. The rest are of no interest now, we're too far in front.

Record goals and record points should be the target. It would take some doing but with a fair wind and a bit of luck, it’s definitely not beyond this team.

For the goals, we’d need to give a couple of teams the sort of hiding that we all know we could, if we really went for it.

this is probably correct, but the bulk of the off-field fun is in speculating when it's a mathematical certainty rather than a probability. It's a bit of an anti-climax to have the benefit of hindsight and declare "we actually won promotion when we played WIgan/Hull/Sunderland"

Personally, I think we got promoted last night, but time will tell

Both of those targets would be a real challenge. We need to inflict one or two absolute hammerings to get near the goals target. We're going to need 3 goals per game to get to 100 which is a lot more than our average so far.

I'd be happy with 23 or more unbeaten or 100+ points. You've got to have something to play for, if we are promoted in 3 games time we need something to challenge the team for the last 6 games.

Luton still have to play boro, Watford, Millwall and b4stards, can't imagine they'll be taking maximum points from these 4, so I would say win next 2 and we're up. Although it may not be mathematically at that point.

Finally, somebody agrees with me at the top of this thread.

Why is this so difficult for us to work out?. 😕

I may be proved wrong because they're clearly a more than decent outfit, but Luton's next 2 are pretty tough. I can see them dropping some points tbh and maybe moving out of the equation should we get a couple more wins.
