The Times newspaper.

Post by RammyClaret61 » Thu Mar 16, 2023 9:21 am

Being back in the U.K. I’m sampling different newspapers each day. Today my choice was The Times. After the shock of paying £2.50, I thought, no worries, I’ll enjoy the report on last nights win while I drink my £3.55 coffee. NOT A SINGLE WORD! Reports on only Madrid v Liverpool, the 2 premier league games, Sunderland v Sheff U and Luton v Bristol City. What a poor show. :(

Yes sadly newspapers are on the way out, falling demand given 24 hours news available elsewhere. Local newspapers bit the dust years ago, use it or lose it!

If you bought it everyday for a year it would cost £780.00 that's if the Saturaday edition is the same price.

The Times, which I've read since age 16, has really scaled back the League coverage in the past couple of years, no doubt for budgetary reasons. It started during covid and hasn't gone back to where it was, which is a real shame as the sports coverage in the paper is generally great with some top class writing. In fairness our non 3pm Saturday televised games have generally merited a short report this season and last night we obviously suffered against the European coverage and the Sheff Utd and Luton games getting a short write up. Our win did get a brief bullet point mention at the end of the Sunderland Sheff Utd report.

The cost of papers though is getting staggering. I remember paying 10p a day for The Times 20 years ago, even on subscription now it is about 2 quid a weekday now. I'm ending mine next time and going entirely digital for 15 quid a month, though i will miss the feel of holding a paper in my hands!

I thought with having Kompany that there would be loads more coverage but doesn't seem to be the case apart from a few more general articles about how well he has done, and the obvious links to City

The Times, Telegraph and Daily Mail being selective in their reports. Who'd have thought it?

Very brief report tagged onto end of Sheff Utd match report in the Times on line edition.

Times has done some great features on Burnley, Vincent Kompany and certain players this season.

Saturday print edition and Sunday Times costs a lot more, as a one-off purchase than the 5 week day editions.

I miss newspapers but they can’t compete with the new media of the internet.

I used to spend half my weekend reading papers and was a daily ritual.

Daily Mail
Guardian
Telegraph
Independent

We’re all good reads. Not so much these days.

All the nationals agree there are only five teams in the English league and they get all the headlines and the articles are all about them. Oh and of course now the new media darlings Wrexham.

Family member reports for a national daily on football and boxing. He's approached bfc in the last week for interviews for a spread on the East Lancs derby, but the paper have told him to scrub this now and get into the scramble for anything he can find around the predictable "prodigal returns" hype for the city game.

He presumes the derby stuff will be quietly binned off.

I subscribe to the " Times " & " Telegraph " online and also read the " Guardian " online, which is free ... I only buy the " Sunday Times " as an actual newspaper now ..

There will be a tiny report when we secure promotion. A few token words across media. Then fewer if we get promoted as champions. Maybe a footnote if we beat records.

The basic issue is that nobody cares about the Championship and the PL, sadly, is the only place to be.

I don't think it really matters now, it's not how most people consume their sports news. It used to be a bit exciting back in the 80s/90s if Burnley made the nationals. But I've not read an actual newspaper for.. I imagine about 10 years or so now. Yet there's more stuff out there to read about Burnley than ever.

The only reason I subscribe to The Times (on line) is Mike Atherton's cricket writing. No expectations of coverage of anything else, but Atherton is worth the price. Brilliant.

I did a similar thing for the broadsheets in the early 90s. I found the Times much deteriorated after the year long strike of 1986 (the Wapping Dispute) and I felt uncomfortable about reading it and The Sunday Times (which I'd read for years) because of Murdoch. The Telegraph was too right for me, The Independent focused to much on the arts, and, whilst I found it challenging at times, I found I liked reading The Guardian, less so The observer.

I stopped reading newspapers once I got used to the internet and have no regrets. Now I read what I want when I want - sometimes still some articles from The Guardian - without getting dirty hands!

The Daily Telegraph has abandoned football below the PL altogether. Rugby League gets a quarter page occaisonally, women's football gets covered, and we had 7 pages of rugby union last weekend.

The rugby union bias is so appalling that when the rugby league world cup final was played last November, the next rugby union world cup (not starting for another 10 months) got more coverage.
