Not a surprise, whenever he talks before or after a game he seems defeated. Was hard to imagine him having enough about him to turn things around

Overachieved last season and they're a weaker team this.

Baffled. He's done well there. He's not been backed in the transfer market. They just needed a sriker

Re: Patrick Viera
Taken five points from the last possible 33.
Not won in 2023.
No shots on target in the last three games. (so yes, seems a striker wouldn't go amiss)
Just three points above the relegation spots.
Wasn't exactly Sherlock Holmes stuff to deduce that this was coming.
Maybe Rodgers next?

Who will they go for now? Always seem to look a little left field since Hodgson.

I hope they get someone like Hassenhutl in on a 2-3 year deal - I don't want to see Allardyce in till the end of the season (I could see Parish going after Kompany in the summer if Sam kept them up then left).

Re: Patrick Viera
Jon Dahl Tomasson could do a job for them. He's doing well at a small tinpot club, so would be a massive step up.
Re: Patrick Viera
Their fixtures have been horible during the bad run, almost all against teams in the top half of the table.
I expect everyone will be talking about a new manager bounce in their upcoming games against teams in the bottom half.

Would they go for Lampard?
Re: Patrick Viera
He did a very good job last season but they’ve had a bit of a torrid time this season.

They can try but I doubt either Kompany or Carrick will leave what they have at the minute.

Re: Patrick Viera
Harsh sacking in my view. Like someone said above they haven't really backed him financially and they are about where you'd expect them to be. This idea that a poor run of form is solely down to the manager is ridiculous in football.

Re: Patrick Viera
Kompany and Carrick have possibly 2 of the safest jobs in football so I can't see either being in a rush to leave where they are. Both have family close by to their current locations and are young managers who could potentially be passing Palace in a few weeks time.Commy wrote: ↑Fri Mar 17, 2023 9:35 amhttps://www.hitc.com/en-gb/2023/03/16/w ... reer-wins/

Re: Patrick Viera
Might be harsh but Palace will have seen the dip in form and the relegation places closing by the week.
It's fair to say he hasn't been backed in the market, however CP did spend a good amount in the past 2 summer windows, and their form has fallen off a cliff since the World Cup.
Given they are sat 12th and have a favourable run-in it is a big gamble to pot him now especially if they don't have a replacement lined-up.
They have a trip to Arsenal next, but after that they play 6 sides involved in the relegation battle, so any incoming manager might will be appointed at a good time for him.
I make it 9 of the 20 PL clubs who have changed manager this season for whatever reason.

Re: Patrick Viera
The problem with saying he hasn't been backed in the market is that the majority of teams in the Prem have very wealthy owners and every club can't possibly be backed sufficiently to stop up.
If they go down it's simply because it's their turn to get relegated, nothing more, nothing less.

Re: Patrick Viera
Palace have backed Viera, he just couldn't get the team to fire on all cylinders since the world cup, that's on him and no one else.
They've got Strikers, but Ayew isn't very good and never really has been.
Mateta isn't getting much game time, so can't find any form
Edouard gets the mins but can't hit a barn door, but he wasn't much better last season tbh.
Maybe they just need to improve on their scouting system because they've signed some duffers, but they do spend if needs be

Re: Patrick Viera
They spend a fair amount. 40m net spend with transfer fees this season, 60m last season. 135m wage bill (over 100% of revenue). Likes of Zaha on 100k a week. I’m not having that as a reason for his downfall. He’s just not been good enough since the World Cup, stubborn with his choices and the football has gone awful (just broke a PL record for 3 games without a shot on target). Palace fans I follow said players the other night didn’t look like they cared, against their ‘rivals’ Brighton.

Re: Patrick Viera
In terms of the player and age profile, they remind me of the Burnley team of the last two years in the PL. They feature players I could not see playing in any other PL team at present, and all in their twilight years ie Ayew, Ward, Hughes, Schlupp, and several others. It makes the PL survival scrap even more interesting

What's happened to the likes of Eze & Olise?
Last season both looked brilliant yet this year neither have been as constantly good.

Re: Patrick Viera
Roy Hodgson is currently favourite to go back in, presumably if they are considering that it will be until the end of the season only.
Has to be said that Vieira has hardly improved them since replacing Hodgson.

I saw they are considering former player Paddy McCarthy from the u21s as an interim.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Fri Mar 17, 2023 10:51 amRoy Hodgson is currently favourite to go back in, presumably if they are considering that it will be until the end of the season only.

I think last season he definitely improved them, Palace fans loved the change in style from Hodgson ball and I was quite impressed overall.
From what I've read Viera did similar at Nice, started really well then results started to tail off after a bit and he was sacked.
Re: Patrick Viera
Eze 1 goal and 1 assist last season.
Olise 2 goals and 5 assists.
They just weren’t that good last year. Zaha is the one who has dropped off.

Just listened to VKs presser and he was asked about Vieras sacking. His response was very clear, analytical, fulsome and he didn't sit on the fence. Excellent as we've come to expect.

The Athletic with the 'inside story' on what went wrong at Palace for Viera. Always interesting.

Re: Patrick Viera
What's the average employment length of a PL manger of the last ten years? Can't be more than a season and a half, even with Dyche, Klopp, Pep and a couple of others boosting it.
Re: Patrick Viera
The PL is split in two at present. The top 11 clubs have 35 points or more, the bottom 9 have 27 or less. And Palace's last 11 games have all been against the top 11.
Palace's easiest (on paper) away games have been Chelsea and Aston Villa. Their easiest (on paper) home games have been Liverpool and Brighton. They won't have been favourites in a single one of those games.
They have got 5 points and 6 (mostly narrow) defeats.

Palace recently set a new PL record of playing 3 consecutive matches without registering a single shot on target. Home matches against Manchester City and Liverpool and Away at Villa.

Hodgson?
That will inspire the team.
Re: Hodgson?
75yr old, not saying a lot for the available management pool!
Re: Hodgson?
Uninspiring. Probably keeps them up, but so would Viera given their remaining fixtures.

Re: Hodgson?
I suppose in the circumstances it makes sense to appoint Hodgson in the short term, then assuming he keeps them up, which with their upcoming fixtures he should, they can properly assess for a long term manager in the summer.

Re: Hodgson?
If Crystal Palace were conceding loads of goals, this would make sense
As they can't score already, I'm not sure putting Roy back in charge helps that

Cost cutting, they still have the Roy Hodgson manager door sign and managers coat with RH on it.

Re: Hodgson?
He's free
Knows the PL
Has the experience of a relegation battle.
Probably happy enough to work until the summer with no further guarantees of work next summer
There's not many out there that will fit the criteria

Boost for the other teams in the relegation dog fight.
Bizarre appointment.

I quite like PV but there was most definitely an over achieving thing going on there last season . He has seemed incredibly downcast all season , perhaps there’s issues behind the scenes . Be amazed if they didn’t have enough to stop up .

Re: Patrick Viera
Palace over the last couple of years have made hey while the sun shone. They’ve always had bad runs, however this season the points haul against the teams where Palace should be competing have dried up, making the current run seem different. I think this is the end many saw coming from the start of his tenure, and for that reason PV has actually improved his reputation while at Palace with those (like me) that expected it to be a bad appointment in the first place.
Re: Patrick Viera
Could Vieira be a good succession plan for Kompany? Comes from the same City/Pep background and a similar philosophy

Re: Patrick Viera
If our board decided to appoint a ‘youngish manager’ and a change in style and direction, and 18months later re appoint the guy that they had initially sacked that employs a style they tried to move away from then I’d be asking serious questions.

Re: Patrick Viera
Freakishly, 8 of Crystal Palace’s last 10 fixtures are against sides currently sitting below them in the PL table. A couple of wins and Hodgson will be lauded for turning things around.
