Peacock-Farrell 4
Roberts 6
Beyer 6
Al-Dakhil 6
Maatsen 5
Cullen 5
Gudmundsson 6
Tella 6
Zaroury 6
Vitinho 5
Foster 6

Cork 5
Barnes 5
Obafemi 6

For the record, I thought we were really good for 30 minutes, but then not great against a side that played pretty well first half and were simply unplayable in the second.

No real criticism in these ratings, they were just way too good.

Phenomenally hard to rate because City were really good and its almost unfair to criticise players who've been great this season for getting completely over run when City went through the gears

From the TV (and behind the sofa 2nd half)

BPF 5 - only the sixth was his fault but you can question his distribution a lot, especially 2nd half
Maatsen 4 - he was absolutely terrible 2nd half sadly, missed a chance for a simple pass and absolutely no idea where the man he was supposed to be marking was
Beyer 6* - that trademark run forward is still there against the best in the land, but struggled with the movement of City
Al 4 - it was always going to be a huge test for him and it was
Roberts 5 - I think he'll be seeing Phil Foden in his nightmares for a while
Vitinhio 4 - you've just got to do the simple stuff well, and well, he didn't
Cullen 6 - thought he was great 1st half, but another who was blown away by City 2nd
JBG 4 - just couldn't get near the ball, even in the 1st half
Tella 5 - another one who found the step up just too much
Zaurory 4 - completely anonymous
Foster 4 - some good bits, but under hit passes at 0-0 when on the break are not what is required at this level

Subs
Barnes 4 - City on fire and he's not going to dent that at 33
Cork 4 - as above
Obafemi 6 - probably our best player 2nd half

Look, at 0-0 we were playing well, and should have punished City on the break, but three or four times we were far too casual with the pass and messed it up

Once City got going, they blew us away and that was always the concern

Lessons to be learnt about the reality of the challenge next season but this shouldn't detract from the fact that we are still one of the best sides in the championship, and City took our threat seriously enough to turn in one of their best performances of the season 2nd half

Onwards and upwards!

BPF 4 - Made a mess of at least 1 goal, positioning wasn’t good for the first and felt his distribution was poor in the main
Roberts 5 - some good bits but got pulled all over
Al-Dakhil 6 - quite impressive first half, he’s quite quick so helped us defend the high line, lack of experience told in the 2nd
Beyer 6* - losing 6-0 and giving MOM to a defender seems daft but I thought he did quite well and didn’t look out of place
Maatsen 5 - did well at OT in December but pulled all over in this one
Cullen 6 - decent first half, good to see him still so composed in this arena
JBG 6 - was one of our best performers first half and I was surprised / disappointed he was subbed
Vitinho 5 - works hard, presses well but some really good play from us broke down when it reached him, this is quite common in the league too
Tella 6 - didn’t look out of place, understandably tired second half
Zaroury 6 - some iffy decision making but looked good in parts
Foster 6 - like JBG I thought he played well first half, pressed intelligently and his pace at least threatened in behind

Cork 5 - City obviously turned some screws but he looked way off the pace
Barnes 5 - wasn’t as good as Foster
Obafemi 6 - looks quicker than Tella to me

Overall, an expected result and scoreline. Gutted we couldn’t deliver the same first half performance in the second. Possible that our subs and change of shape contributed but also City are just ridiculously good. Like most of us said, it was a crap draw and that didn’t throw up any surprises.

Peacock-Farrell 3 he’s nowhere near good enough
Roberts 5 tried early on but struggled as it went on
Beyer 6 good with the ball, some way off it defensively
Al-Dakhil 4 made to look extremely weak
Maatsen 3 really taught a lesson and didn’t have any answers.
Cullen 6 tried his best but left exposed.
Gudmundsson 5 big ask to play an unnatural position against this lot. Did far better than his replacement though.
Tella 6 did ok when we got the ball to him.
Zaroury 5 didn’t see much of it.
Vitinho 4 not his natural position, can get away with it at our level, not this.
Foster 3 I thought he was awful

Cork 3 the sort of performance that meant he spent so much time on the bench in the premier league. Awful.
Barnes 4 didn’t offer much
Obafemi 4 felt for him as we were done by then.

We did alright for 20 mins, slightly panicked on occasions when we did get the ball but still created a few chances.

It just fell apart in the second half, City can do that to sides but it was worrying how the midfield fell apart.
I thought it was a good change at the time when we brought Cork on but he was so far off it that it was untrue.

Overall City were different class. For me we need to buy Beyerand Tella plus 2 midfielders and a goalkeeper and the striker from Coventry....that is a lot to ask ...but if VK does well again with our recruitment we should have a chance

For me Matsen is brilliant going forward but not a good defender ...I love watching him play in the Championship might be a tough watch in the Premier

I’ll be honest I’m not sure I can rate that. We were really good first half but then totally dry humped second by one of if not the best team in the world. I’d need to watch it back to be anywhere near accurate and fair.

What I would say is I thought Cork and Barnes made us worse.

Peacock Farrell 5

Tella 6
Zaroury 5

City were far too good for us in the second half when they were virtually unplayable and would have outplayed most teams in the Premier League and Europe

We played very well for about 30 minutes until
Haaland scored
He was too big strong and fast for our defence and at the other end Walker was too quick and strong for our top man of the moment Tella
No disgrace in this result.
Now we can concentrate on finishing Champions in the Championship

BPF - 3 Distribution was poor. Hopefully some Burnley fans realise how important Muric is to us.
Roberts - 4 - Foden had him
Beyer - 6 - Deffo PL quality
Al-Dakhil - 4 - Struggled but there is deffo a player in there.
Maatsen - 4 - Defensively poor
Zaroury- 4 - Tried too hard
JBG - 4. - not a cm
Cullen - 5-needed help
Vitinho - 3 - not good enough out wide in the championship, certainly not against city
Tella - 5 - pace will be an asset in the PL
Foster - 5 - did ok

Subs
Cork - 4 -days as a PL CM are gone. Desperately need someone in there to help Cullen come the summer
Barnes - 4- struggled
Obafemi-4- not sure on his best position

A royal trowncing which is best if quickly forgotten. Nobody really came out unscathed from this performance. We will have a great learning curve next year. Even though these are far better than most we will face I fear we will concede plenty when confidence ebbs.

No public hangings for being destroyed by such a good team Even Dyche teams who were as closed as any took beatings.

You have to laugh
I regularly spread bet on player performances, so carefully study the analysis of player touches i
Gudmunsson has 3 touches of the ball in the oppositionn Half tonight .One was a header he flicked on in the first minute

Don’t understand why we didn’t play our strongest side, especially with the keeper. Surely a perfect scenario for Muric.

Thought we were brilliant until the first goal, then awful for the entirety after it.

BPF 5 - passing ok but not at the level it needed to be, and didn’t make the crucial early saves when they came. Huge mistake to play him
Roberts 6 - started feisty which was impressive and tried to kick Foden but the kid is tough as old boots, world class for me so Roberts had no chance
Maatsen 5 - struggled at this level, had some good moments but was up against a very good player in Mahrez
Al-Dakhil 6 - very good initially but it was his mistake for the first goal by over committing and letting Haaland get a run on goal, then he lost him for the second too
Beyer 5 - I detected a lack of pace and a lack of physicality, he is a class act but I have a small concern about him in the PL
Cullen 7 - acquitted himself ok
Gudmundsson 6 - we got a lot worse after he went off
Zaroury 4 - sadly wasn’t in the game at all, marked by a top class fullback
Vitinho 6 - nearly created the best chance at 0-0 but Foster failed to give it straight back to him
Tella 5 - had a few glimpses but it did show against the very best why pace is not enough
Foster 5 - the way to play City away is with a false 9 and Barnes is doing that far better at present, a bit odd to play a weaker side in such a big game

Barnes 6 - dropped back well at times but heads were dropping by this point and City’s tails were up
Cork 5 - coming on at 2-0 down to City is the definition of a thankless task
Obafemi 6 - showed good energy

I have mixed feeling. I knew Pep would play Haaland because he couldn’t take the risk, we are too good to. I also worried given Foden was rested on Tuesday - he is as much a nightmare for sides like us, a top, top player who loves getting kicked, it just makes him play better. This was a stronger team than played Leipzig.

So in that context we did very well for 34 minutes and were the better team as BBC said. A defensive mistake we can accept, not just by Al-Dakhil for over committing when Beyer was already out of position. Also the fullbacks who didn’t sense the danger and push up to leave Haaland offside.

So my fear for next season is that lack of nous at the back. Too many youngsters and not the wise old heads to control a defence and coordinate them.

But it was very promising. Very promising indeed. Many teams have had a worse first half here than us.

BPF - 6 - Distribution let him down but saved a few decent efforts at 2-0 to give us half a chance.
Roberts - 6 - Steady enough, good battle with Foden first half
Bayer - 6
Al Dakhil - 6
Maatsen - 6
Cullen - 6
JBG - 5
Tella - 7 - MOM - seemed our only threat for the most parts
Zaroury - 6
Vitinho - 5
Foster - 4

Game plan worked for 30 mins, seemed to be man marking which I don’t think City expected. Pep soon realised and changed his tactics. Main attribute of City is that any of their players seem to be able to play any position, and once they’d pulled us all over the park, there were gaps appearing everywhere and the players they have can’t be afforded time and space.

Someone mentioned the other day about Tellas pace in the prem, and how stronger/faster defenders meant he may struggle. He’s lightning quick in the Championship but that break away where Walker got back and took the ball from him summed up what’s to come next year I feel.

Lastly, I think VK got a few of the selections wrong today. JBG can be sampled in a CM role at home to Wigan, not away at City. Cork should have started for me. Also feel a 60% fit Benson offers more than Vitinho on the right flank.

Today was a free hit for us, could have been a dream trip to Wembley. Let’s put it behind us and look to break the Reading record in the Championship!

A tough night and reality check.

BPF - 6- couple of decent saves but a bit suspect for a couple of goals and a little awkward with ball at feet.

Roberts- 6 - exposed for second goal but stuck at it well.

Maatsen- 4 - good first half other than one poor pass wh2n well placed, but disintegrated in the second.

Al Dakhil - 5 - game enough but inexperience exposed quite a few times.

Beyer - 6 - carried the ball well and our best defender but still caught a couple of times, most obviously (unfortunately) for the first goal.

Cullen - 5 - decent in the first half for 30 minutes but completely overwhelmed even before half time.

JBG - 5 - this central midfield role doesn't really feel right against top opponents, and he struggled.

Vitinho - 4 - worked hard enough but didn't add much in attack and if the idea is he'll help defensively, that didn't really pan out either.

Tella - 6 - used his pace to carry a threat to reasonable effect.

Zaroury - 6 - a bit inconsistent and inevitably on the margins as the game progressed, but picked out a couple of really smart passes to create chances in the first half and one splendid cross in the second.

Foster- 6 - bit surprised he was withdrawn because I thought he'd done quite well and caused City problems.

Cork - 5 - still think he should have started, and for a couple of minutes at the start of the second half he brought an extra composure to our passing out from deep, but the truth was he couldn't stem the tide and City passed around him as the half developed.

Barnes - 5 - won a few free kicks and worked hard but not any real threat.

Obafemi - 5 - not unlike Tella, used his pace to soke effect but the game had gone.

Even in the Premier League, we won't be playing a team this good every week, so best to park it fast. But even so, this was a little naive at times and highlighted the gulf between Championship and Premier League. For the most part we stuck at it well and for 30 minutes it was a credible football match but after that we were picked off a bit easily.

A good lesson to learn now though, and after the break we can get back to breaking that 100 point mark.

BFP 4
Roberts 6
Beyer 6
Al-Dakhil 6
Maatsen 5
Cullen 6
Gudmundsson 5
Tella 4
Zaroury 5
Vitinho 5
Foster 5

Cork 5
Barnes 5
Obafemi 6

I felt we should have gone with our strongest team especially in goal. Not about saving any of the shots but we never controlled the ball and Muric would have allowed us to do that better.

Fortunately VK doesn’t agree given he’s made him his skipper for most of this season.
Cork has made a massive contribution this season - it’s only recently he has been on the bench after his suspensions from the league and the cup. Even if he remains on the bench for the rest of the season he’s played a big big part in our success.

Peacock-Farrell 4 - very nervy with the ball at his feet. Needed to be mindful of keeping the ball when we could, so v surprised by his inclusion
Roberts 5 - tough night
Beyer 6 - pick of the bunch at the back and I will never tire of those surging runs
Al-Dakhil 5 - will be a hell of a learning experience for the lad
Maatsen 4 - thought he totally disintegrated in the 2nd half
Cullen 5 - did his best
Gudmundsson 5 - as above
Tella 6 - thought he was ok, dynamic as he could be
Zaroury 5 - some decent touches but overthought it and looked a little overawed
Vitinho 4 - I don’t know how he’s getting starts in this positions, let alone in a game like this
Foster 5 - put himself about a bit

Cork 5
Barnes 5
Obafemi 6 - lively in a tough situation

Went as expected - he is just a freak up top and they have class all over the park. While it maybe wouldn’t have affected the final result too much, you have to play your best players at City, and that includes Muric who, as we’ve discussed ad infinitum on here, is crucial to our possession play. Surely this is even more critical when we’re going to see less of the ball. BPF showed tonight he isn’t close.

Otherwise, it’s one to park, learn from and move on. Also, slightly harsh to be writing down the qualities / values of some of our players against City who are levels above a lot of the PL and who we’ve caught in a real hot streak, as they showed against the team third in the Bundesliga in midweek. Haaland obv scoring for fun but De Bruyne in that second half…sometimes you just have to admire it.

We had a very good 30 mins. They had an excellent hour.
Keeper very poor passing first half. Very good passing 2nd half. Also a couple of decent saves. Not sure why he is being scapegoats.

Impressed by Beyer, who looked like he belonged.

Peacock-Farrell 6 Poor distribution but not at fault for the goals
Roberts 4 Poor, weak in the tackle. slow and out of position, didn`t seem to care, a weak link
Al-Dakhil 5 Reality check, up against the best so difficult to be overcritical
Beyer 6 Struggled against the pace of city`s attack but at leaat tried to make something happen
Maatsen 4 missed a few good opportunities to release players in good positions in the 1st half, defensively woeful
Cullen 5 out muscled and needed to move the ball quicker
Guðmundsson 5 little/no meaningful contribution
Vitinho 4 not a winger at this level, would have been better at right back
Tella 7 Ran, chased, harried but got little support or service, his pace wasn`t quite as effective against quality defenders
Zaroury 4 didn`t receive the ball early enough to have a run at Walker and as a result Walker had him in his pocket
Foster 4 Long way to go to be good enough at this level poor team selection really

Barnes 5 improved the forward line but not to an effective level
Cork 4 Poor, looked tired after 20 minutes, showed his in effectiveness at this level
Obafemi 5 At least he brought some life to our attack but no service to feed off

Always going to be a big ask but I felt for once team selection could have been better and player positions weren`t the best option given the quality of the opposition but hopefully VK will have learnt a lot about his squad with a view to next season bearing in mind we won`t be playing against City every week thank God. I’ll be honest I’m not sure I can rate that. We were really good first half but then totally dry humped second by one of if not the best team in the world. I’d need to watch it back to be anywhere near accurate and fair.

What I would say is I thought Cork and Barnes made us worse.
I agree, except that even watching it back might not help me. And I don't say that with any annoyance. We competed with ambition for 30 minutes but ultimately were made to run out of steam and the wheels came off a bit. Nearly in the words of Steve Redgrave, if you see me entering the Etihad again, you have my permission to shoot me.

Don’t understand why we didn’t play our strongest side, especially with the keeper. Surely a perfect scenario for Muric.

Thought we were brilliant until the first goal, then awful for the entirety after it.
BPF is our cup goalkeeper, a decision made by our manager

Try understanding it

From tv
As others have said it is very difficult to rate our players given how special this City team is. On their day they are unstoppable: they did to us what we have done to other teams this year in the Championship, but better.
BPF 5 very average distribution and he looked shell shocked in the second half
Roberts 6 didnt get a chance to get forward, under too much pressure
AlDakil 6 I bet he wondered what hit us
Beyer 7 mom, tried so hard to get us moving out of defence, but City don't allow this.
Maatsen 5 I've said it several times on here, his defensive positional play is not great
Vitihno 5 huffed and puffed but nothing going forward, not great defensively
Cullen 6 he looked sooo alone in the centre of midfield. We will need extra athleticism and physicality alongside next season
JBG 6 spent most of the match chasing shadows
Zaroury 6 again I've said it several times, the last few games his crossing selection has been average, mind you he was playing against Walker
Tella 7 tried his heart out but not much end product
Foster 6 didn't get much service
Barnes 6 some of his lay offs were quite good but nothing upfront
Cork 6 struggled to get into the game against their multi-talented midfield
Taylor 6 I might have been tempted to start with him at lb, better defensively than Ian
It's a shame we couldn't come away with a galant 3-1 loss, but in that second half our young, inexperienced players could not handle a very, very good City side.
VK will have learnt we need more power and strength in midfield next season.
Let's enjoy the rest of the season and achieve promotion asap.

Important point this but one I disagree with.

If I marked to give extra based on the gap to the opponent they could play me and I’d get a 10 (well, I would if I were marking myself  )

The standard I think we are all marking against is against the standard needed in this particular game. If I rate a player ‘below average’ that may just mean he was dominated by his opponent. For some today that is no shame and that same level of quality may get a far higher score in our next match.

Might help if a couple of those sniping in this thread actually gave their own player ratings rather than just whinging.

The result we expected, especially when we saw their lineup, which showed us a lot of respect, but also was likely to run riot once they hit their stride. This was a lot like us in the championship this season; find the measure of our opponents, then go to town on them.

No qualms with our selection. If you're going to have a set of players who do the cup games you can't just ditch it when you draw someone decent. Wouldn't have made a difference against this lot anyway.

There's no reality check here because we all know how good City are and we won't be competing for the title next season. We did well for half an hour then disintegrated. Champions against Championship this certainly was.

6s all round. Everyone did OK at times and not OK at others.
