If I've got this correct, aren't you a retired locksmith ?

If so, can I please ask you for some advice and maybe a recommendation ?

We need to replace a euro cylinder lock on a DG uPVC door as there are keys out
there for the existing lock that we don't to be able to be used. For ease, we've been
looking to fit a thumb screw type, which will make it simpler to open the door from
the inside without having to find the key everytime.

My question is, are there any thumb screw types out there that can prevent entry by the use of a key from the outside if it is required ?

At the moment we leave the key in the lock to prevent entry from outside.

Thanks in anticipation of your help. If I've got it wrong please accept my apologies.

I've just had to have a lock replaced on a uPVC door ( the lock had been a bit dodgy for a while and finally gave up the ghost in the locked position with the door open. Awesome!) The locksmith, Birros from Colne, replaced the lock and fitted a thumb screw on the inside. Can highly recommend the man.

We have thumb turns (Euro Cylinders) on our patio doors so keys are not needed to be sourced to go out too ... but as for your question about not being able to use a key on a thumbturn style lock from the outside no I don't think there is any on the market that do that ...

All I can suggest is fitting secondary internal bolts/locks that cannot be accessed from outside .. or continue to leave a key on the inside if external access is to be stopped.

Replacing the Cylinder with a quality thumbturn (and not giving keys out to undesirables) is probably your answer ... there are some good marques out there

Not been in yet ... the're only doing beer, no food yet ... been told Punch Taverns forced the lad to open up with minimum refurbishment, no Kitchen etc etc etc.

Now jog on with your incessant jibing at me yes it can be amusing ... but this thread was a serious question asked to me

Thanks for all the responses, much appreciated.

We have decided to opt for a thumbscrew type.

Boss, is there any particular make that you would recommend, apart
from the usual Yale or Union ? Any to stay clear of at all ? I have noticed
that 3* rating seems to be the best. Any in the Screwfix catalogue ?

I appreciate your advice

Yale and Union are OK ... but I would recommend something like the "Orion" Snap safe with the BS3621 standard ... its pick resistant etc

Or similar ... they are not cheap but as anyone will tell you "buy cheap buy twice" always look for the kitemark.

If I may, whilst this thread is fresh, ask a question Bosscat.
We have a Euro cylinder fitted to our house and on a couple of occasions have had a problem with a key being in the cylinder on the inside whilst another key is inserted to outside and turned.
Both times the lock has turned but the inside and outside go out of sync and I've had to remove the lock and spend ages to get it right again.
So could I ask, should this happen, or is the cylinder faulty?
TIA

Hi sorry for not getting back to you ... A Eurocylinder is designed to not work if a key is on the other side ... if it gets worn it does exactly what you have described ... I would recommend Cylinder replacement as the key sometimes cannot be removed after locking the door, which is a problem if its on the outside ...

So yes you assume right the cylinder is faulty ... also this usually happens with cheaper cylinders ...

Like I said earlier "by cheap buy twice" its always worth it buying a good quality BS3621 β˜†β˜†β˜† lock

(also insurance companies recommend them, and it has been known for a policy not to pay out if a burglary takes place, and the policy holder has said BS standard locks are fitted for the investigator only to find they are not)

I can be a "Bantersaurus Rex" but the problem is when a "Dicklodocus" keeps digging it gets boring day in day out 😁

Followed this thread with interest. Bosscat May I ask a favour please. I’ve made a note of the locks you recommend and found them on line, they have slightly different codes I.e. T35/35 AS- T40/40AS - T40/50AS. How do I work out which one I’ll require, they’re both for the French doors. Also is there anyone you’d recommend to fit them and is it best to leave it to the fitter to order them as long as I ensure they order the ones you mentioned. -I live nr Skipton. Thank you.

You need to know what length of Cylinder you require beddie ... the easiest way is to take out the cylinder ... (you will need the T length (as in T40-50) on the inside measurement)..

You may be best getting a Locksmith, if you are unsure how to do that.

I'm sorry but I don't know who does Locksmithing round Skipton anymore, I've been finished 7 years now (probably all agency guys these days) be wary of the yellow pages or any online "your local locksmith" adverts.

I passed on a lot of work to a lad in Ingleton but not sure if he's still trading.

The lock is easy to remove. There is a screw on the door edge in line with
the hole in the centre of the cylinder, as seen on the attached diagram. Remove
this screw and the cylinder simply slides out. You may need to use the key to manipulate it.

Take the measurements as shown above and order a new one accordingly. Replace the cylinder
in the reverse order. Easy peasy.

Good luck with it. :) :) :)

One of the problems people face is on french doors (upvc) there is a centre piece that covers the edge of the slave door that needs taking off to access the centre screw on that door ....
