Interesting reading the comments ... Houseclaret (he is the same "Ian" Houseclaret as visits here) and RobH20 (an ex Giggleswick Grammar School boy from Colne) who used to frequent the Boars Head back in the day ... often wonder what happened to him or if he is still with us...LONDONCLARET23 wrote: βTue Mar 21, 2023 5:10 pmI have no clue how this article from yesteryear popped up on my Google stories but it provided a lovely bit of Tuesday afternoon nostalgia

Some great comments there. Strange that Burnley fans sing about the Longside and the club now flashes it out in the stadium before kick off.
But it no longer exists

Re: Shanks said no
Amazing how many songs we have compared with most teams. City might have some of the best players on the planet but they barely sing Blue Moon nowadays. After last week Iβm not sure if Hull have any songs!

Though the song was probably first sung about the Stretford Enders.

Interestingly, we've had this debate before. Why would the Stretford End sing a song about Bill Shankly and Bertie Mee.dougcollins wrote: βTue Mar 21, 2023 7:46 pmThough the song was probably first sung about the Stretford Enders.
It is like a number of Burnley songs originally sung by Scouses. As is the current. In my Lancashire home, which is obviously the old scouse song about 2 cathedrals and accents exceedingly rare.
In the early 70, Liverpool and Arsenal were the two big teams and Shanks and Bertie Mee the two managers. The song is basically alluding to the fact that Kopites had no knowledge of their counterparts in the North bank HIghbury.

Not quite, dougcollins.dougcollins wrote: βTue Mar 21, 2023 7:46 pmThough the song was probably first sung about the Stretford Enders.
Bertie Mee said to Bill Shankly "Have you heard of the North Bank, Highbury."
Shanks said no, I don't think so, but I've heard of the Longside, Burnley.

Re: Shanks said no
We definitely weren't the first to sing it. And it wasn't Liverpool, the Shankly reference doesn't fit with that (because of course Shankly would have heard of the Kop End).Royboyclaret wrote: βTue Mar 21, 2023 7:59 pmNot quite, dougcollins.

It was deffo United fans who started it.

I guess we'll never know but the song is:dougcollins wrote: βTue Mar 21, 2023 8:16 pmWe definitely weren't the first to sing it. And it wasn't Liverpool, the Shankly reference doesn't fit with that (because of course Shankly would have heard of the Kop End).

"Bertie Mee said to Bill Shankly "Have you heard of the North Bank, Highbury."
Shanks said no, I don't think so, but I've heard of the Longside, Burnley."
The song is the original I knew from the 70s and makes sense as far as I can see,
Burnley fans took the original and replaced 'Anny road aggro' or as I remember it 'Liverpool FC' with Longside Burnley.
Why would Burnley fans take a song about Matt Busby change it to Bill Shankly and rhyme that with Longside, Burnley?
The Man Utd song is:
Bertie Mee said to Matt Busby,
"Have you heard of the North Bank Highbury?!"
"No", said Matt, "You Cockney tw*t,
But I've heard of the Stretford, Enders."..
Which doesn't rhyme and is factually innacurate Bertie Mee was from the midlands.
I rest my case m'lud....!

Re: Shanks said no
Iβm not aware of anybody singing it before us. Highbury scans well to Burnley. If United or Liverpool sang it then they likely copied us. Like we copied βE for B and Georgie Bestβ and sang βE for B and Ralphie Coatesβ. It didnβt rhyme but it was our version.

Re: Shanks said no
Aye I seem to recall seeing a band called the Spinnners at Colne Muni singing a song that went 'In my Liverpool home, in my Liverpool home we speak with an accent exceedingly rare stand under a statue exceedingly bare if you want a cathedral we've got one to spare in my Liverpool home.
My parents and family were scouses. One half blue the other red and I was taken to both Goodison and Anfield before moving to East Lancashire with my parents then developing an odd accent and finally a passion for the Clarets because let's be honest wandering around Liverpool saying things like "cuk, buk and luk as opposed to coookk, loookk and boookkkkk" kind of marked me as somewhat of an object of ridicule.
As my mother used to bemoan: "ey lar, I can't even understand wot me own kidz are saying never mind dese woolly@rses wot have lived here der ole lives....! "
