Soccer AM finally cancelled
Soccer AM finally cancelled
It's been announced today that Soccer AM will be no more at the end of the season.
I personally do think it has run its course and time for something new as it hasn't been that good for quite a few years now. I just hope they replace it with something that has people who are very knowledgeable in football. I don't want anything like that Saturday Social, it's all about opinions but I think that programme is awful.
I am all for giving someone a chance but as a Sky Sports Sub payer, i don't want to pay to watch Youtubers who probably have as much knowledge of the game as myself.

Used to love it back in the Lovejoy/Chamberlain era. It’s been past it’s sell by date for a few years now though.

Re: Soccer AM finally cancelled
I'm afraid it had its day long ago, and those days are not coming back - Lad Culture and all that.
But I have enjoyed watching the back end of the recent episodes while eating my breakfast - You Know the Drill, the ProAm segments and Showboat. I think Jimmy Bullard is brilliant on it, but the show is a shell of its former self and seems to try too hard at times. They did a Jeff Stelling bit, although the impression was very good, with him shouting and going crossed-eyed... the skit seemed to go on forever and just wasn't funny - and they did it every week.
It's a shame, I won't miss it, but there is going to be a hole for a football-based entrainment show which doesn't take itself too seriously... but that's the way TV is now. Uninteresting. Have you watched Breakfast TV recently? It's depressing.
I know the Big Breakfast lost its way and has been off the air for a long time, but we need more shows like that, something a bit funny with some creativity. Not suits behind a desk telling us 'news'.

It was great in the days of Lovejoy & Helen, especially Lovejoy taking the p**s out of women's football. Wouldn't happen now unfortunately.

Re: Soccer AM finally cancelled
Was good in the early days and went downhill for a few years after Lovejoy and Helen left. Like me I think a lot of people stopped watching then.
I’ve actually got back into it in the last 2 or 3 years. It’s not bad. Some decent guests and the guy who hosts it is fine. The football challenges with Bullard are good and bits like showboat and showing the best goals of the week are still a good way of catching up on the weeks action.
Hopefully they replace it with another football review programme as always found this a good way of building up to the games. I hope they don’t put the likes of Clinton Morrison and Paul Merton on earlier for Soccer Saturday. It already starts 2 or 3 hours earlier than it should do !

Agree with all those on this thread who have pointed out it had had its day once Lovejoy and then Helen Chamberlain left.

Re: Soccer AM finally cancelled
Used to love watching in the sort of 1999-2003 era when it was Lovejoy and Chamberlain with all the extra skits on the side they used to do.
Not watched it in years but it stopped being a good show at least 10 years ago, always hoped Lovejoy would return and it would go back to it's best but some of the stuff that made the show good would never be allowed on TV these days.

Re: Soccer AM finally cancelled
Stopped watching it years ago.
Tried it for a while after Tim Lovejoy and Hells Bells left, but it all seemed rather forced than natural.
I hope they replace it with a new Saturday morning football show, but the format has to change.

Re: Soccer AM finally cancelled
As many are saying it was good fun 20 years ago. When Wimbledon moved to Milton Keynes Soccer AM steadfastly refused to refer to them as Wimbledon and just called them Milton Keynes, took the rest of football a while to catch up.
Re: Soccer AM finally cancelled
I thought it started to go downhill during the Lovejoy / Chamberlain era, it was too long. The reboot with Max Rushden was when it really went to the dogs. The more recent format, 90 minutes with lots of messing about with footballs in the car park with Bullard and Fendley was actually alright imho.
Re: Soccer AM finally cancelled
Used to love soccer am when Helen and Tim presented it. It's been on a slow decline for years really but still OK to watch. Will always have happy memories of being on soccer am when franked fryers away days came to Burnley and they came to my works (Moorhouses Brewery.) They were really nice people but kept having to tell me to speak clearer as my accent was too thick
Re: Soccer AM finally cancelled
GREAT AGE!
Re: Soccer AM finally cancelled
Disappointed in this. It went way off after Lovejoy and Chameberlain left but I do find Fenners a good watch. I liked the introduction of live bands this season also.
Re: Soccer AM finally cancelled
Been pretty poor for a while now, find Bullard annoying but just about put up with him, Fenners is OK bar his dress sense, but those 2 girls they've put on it now (sorry can't remember their names) are absolutely awful, talentless, loud and have me reaching for the off button in seconds

I’ve actually been watching it the last few weeks and thinks it’s pretty good.
And yes it was better when Tim and Helen presented it.

Re: Soccer AM finally cancelled
i had totally forgotten about the Soccerettes. Content of its time, i guess.
These days I mainly watch the youtube channel for ProAm, volleys versus and the kmitas challenge.
loved it back in the day. dont especially like the presenters now, but still sad to see it go.

It’s one of the few shows that promotes up and coming bands too. Had some great acts on over the last year or so.

I found Lovejoy both smug and arrogant. I heard he wasn't much bothered about life outside the EPL because his massive ego was too big to fit inside smaller grounds. Helen, on the other hand, was lovely and a good presenter who held the show together.

And didn't he change the team he 'supported?' From Luton possibly, maybe Watford - but definitely to Chelsea.Billy Balfour wrote: ↑Thu Mar 23, 2023 9:11 amI found Lovejoy both smug and arrogant. Re: Soccer AM finally cancelled
I have always associated Soccer AM with getting haircuts as a kid at Jazz Mans on a Saturday morning. All through the 90's and early 00's growing up I'd be in there for my do, Soccer AM on the TV, little French beers being handed out (not to me of course!), Baz et al running out to put bets on.
Good times.
Good times.

Re: Soccer AM finally cancelled
I forgot about that.
This is what WSC thought about his book.
First, it’s clear that being Tim Lovejoy requires a very special blend of arrogance and ignorance. When he’s not listing his media achievements with a breathtaking lack of guile, he’s sneering at those “sad” enough to take an interest in football history, revealing his utter cluelessness about life outside the Premier League (in a section called “Know Your Silverware”, he refers to “League Three”) and making sundry gaffes, major and minor.

Re: Soccer AM finally cancelled
It was a show very much anchored to the lad FHM culture of the time. When that started to dwindle the show seemed very out of step. I enjoyed it at points (the sketches) but it was also a mix of the geezer/lad stuff which I wasn't a fan of. Lovejoy was a good embodiment of this and the other elements of football.
If you've never read the review of his book it sums it up better than I could ever. If it doesn't work just search 'When Saturday Comes Lovejoy'.

Re: Soccer AM finally cancelled
I’m with Helm here.
In the last 2 or 3 years it’s been decent.
Good guests - enjoy seeing comedians, actors, singers etc talking about their work but also their football teams.
Good bands opening the show.
Good football clips from the week.
And much more packed into a shorter show.
Jimmy Bullard is not the best presenter but he is excellent at the football challenges and still strikes a ball better than most players !!
Of course the stuff from Lovejoy days is now dated and inappropriate but the current show bears very little resemblance.
I know it’s all about ratings but not sure sky will come up with anything better. The Saturday Social show that is on before Soccer AM is absolute drivel.

Re: Soccer AM finally cancelled
And I suppose if I was to reference a sketch or segment with actors dressed up in trackies and bad haircuts with shocking scouse and mancunian accents would make me a racist as well, would it?
Referencing a part of the show that was considered 20 years ago as acceptable viewing, but isn’t now, is not condoning it.
Get a grip.

If your unconscious bias training taught you that Scousers and Mancunians are distinct races or ethnic groups, such muddled thinking might in part explain why the Met is such a mess. Condescend all you like, but you'd do well to read the room. The appropriate response would have been something like, "it wasn't my intention to reinforce or reassert outdated objectify rhetoric, but you know what, you might have a point, perhaps as a police officer I should be more thoughtful about that kind of thing in public."
I don't want an apology or anything; at the very least I'd just expect you to be considerate whenever someone points out that optics matter.

Not that i agree or anything but i thought even Liverpool supporters class themselves as a different ethnicity? We are not English, we are scouse is what they sing?Spiral wrote: ↑Thu Mar 23, 2023 6:10 pmIf your unconscious bias training taught you that Scousers and Mancunians are distinct races or ethnic groups, such muddled thinking might in part explain why the Met is such a mess. Yes i know the word Scouser was a pejorative term to laugh at the poor ( I know this due to my Irish roots, family from Kimmage in Dublin)

I’ve made reference to the soccerettes, and you’ve come to the conclusion that I’ve objectified women, and then for some unknown reason brought my employment into it.
I’m fully aware that being Liverpudlian or Mancunian isn’t a protected characteristic. You haven’t read what I put.
And if you want to bring up being condescending, you’ve told me how I should’ve responded back to you, which is probably as condescending as it gets.
