Silent in the first half when England were dominant, then out come the haters in the 2nd half because we're forced on the back foot defending away from home against a good side.

So predictable and pathetic, almost like some of you have never seen a game of football before, momentum swings, the home side wakes up and the leading side is on the ropes trying to hang on. 4x more shots on target from England and double the XG, hopefully hang on for a well deserved win.

I'd have taken you seriously but when you said A VERY GOOD ITALIAN SIDE!! They aren't, they're pretty average, They've just stepped up 10 yards and we've decided to take 10 back!
Ah yeah poor Italian side because England are winning, just like the Germans were a poor side when England beat them, Croatia were rubbish when we beat them too.

Absolutely superb result from Southgate and the lads. That will weirdly disappoint some who already had their posts readied. Never mind, eh? Well done, England.

Game of 2 halves, brilliant in the first half and contained them in the 2nd despite being pushed back. Great result that.

good first half poor second half, a bit like the ref tbh - both went from being in total control to a bit of chaos. Good win all the same considering Southgate continues to pick players that don't play for their clubs.

Who didn’t qualify for the subsequent World Cup and are in a situation where they don’t have enough young talent coming through to challenge the ageing players.

It’s a team on the decline, but it’s still a good result to start the campaign.

Yeah, and 12 months later failed to reach the WC. Got knocked out by NORTH MACEDONIA. God knows how they won the Euros with no striker for the previous few years, Immobile bangs em in for Lazio but was garbage for Italy. And they still beat us in the Final. They have decent ball players in Verratti, Jorgi and Barella. But absolutely no creativity. It showed tonight. They're pretty pants tbh.

A good first half with Italy appalling but we got lucky with a gift for what turned out to be the winner.

Second half became the usual try to defend an England lead, luckily this Italy side is now a 2nd tier nation, if that was France or Spain I suspect it would have been different. Too many players without enough minutes (Maguire, Phillips and recently Grealish).

Some bizarre comments on here. Outstanding first half, should have been at least 3, Italy came at us second half and got the crowd up, it was difficult… yet they still only created one chance from a gift. Proper solid win.

First half we were good but Italy were p!ss poor. Second half Italy upped their game and England didn’t. Can’t see why Southgate didn’t change Phillips because he was blowing from his arse. It was calling out for a second forward to push Italy back.

I don’t remember that and slightly odd that you do given I assume we’re talking about the summer of 2021, but I’m not alone in believing that Italy are on the slide for now. Mancini himself has been bemoaning the lack of quality at his disposal and I’m sure there’ll be no shortage of pundits who’ll be saying similar in the coming days.

Do you take notes?

A solid win in a difficult place to get one. Showed our quality first half and should have had another goal, second half we had to show a different side to us (a side we are not especially great with historically, under any manager) and managed to see it out. Box seat for winning the group already after that.

Grealish should've made it 3-0, there wasn't anything lucky about that.

Grealish has started 7 of the last 8 UCL matches for Man City (the one he didn't start, they were already qualified from the group). He's also started 9 PL games in a row for City.

Just admit you haven't got a scooby

As someone has already pointed out we haven’t won in Italy since 1961 so whatever you think of Italy now or Southgate as our manager it’s still an excellent result.

If Grealish didn’t miss when it was easier to score the game would have been over at half time. Luckily England defended resiliently enough to clinch a hard fought win and a great start to the Euro campaign.

To give a bit of substance to my concerns about tonight’s game the heatmap shows England were very rarely in the attacking parts of the pitch, and more tellingly the touchmap has us struggling not just for touches in their box but also worryingly in that 18-30 yard zone where we had very few touches in the entire match.

I put that down to not playing an attacker in that number 10 role. That’s team selection and tactics. Just makes for a dull watch even if we do grind out some results.

By then the players were, or at least should've been aware, that the referee wasn't tolerating time wasting - let's be honest, England had been wasting it since Rice scored, it was like watching Burnley s-t-r-e-t-c-h every throw and free kick in the Premiership - and had the sense to stop doing it; on the up-side, it presumably means that Tripps will play the next few games

This is getting a bit weird now, not least because I’m generally pretty positive about England. I think it’s ok to acknowledge that it was a good result, but that this is a poorer version of Italy than there’s been for a while.

Enjoy the rest of your evening.

Sorry Crosspool but England looked fantastic first half and should have been at least 3 up. Bellingham played more or less off Kane when attacking and it suits his skill set, dribbling with the ball in the final third. This wasn’t a set up to grind out the result at all.

I thought exactly the same... now glad Southgate didn't as Phillips was probably our best player after we went down to ten men, he seemed to be everywhere.

We won the XG 1.94 to 1.05
England had 4x as many shots on target.
Grealish missed that sitter off target too.

England better first half, Italy better second. Game decided on a bad refereeing decision. Good result for the winners but largely irrelevant given both will coast through the group.

You said Grealish has been struggling for game time recently at Man City and used it as a reason to have a go at Southgate.

Can you please give a bit of substance to that comment?

(I'll tell you a secret, Grealish has started the last 9 PL games in a row for City)

This is getting a bit weird now, not least because I’m generally pretty positive about England. I think it’s ok to acknowledge that it was a good result, but that this is a poorer version of Italy than there’s been for a while.

Enjoy the rest of your evening.
Let them sink their head in the sand. They'll be back out once we've been knocked out a quarter/semi-final again, coz nothing's changed.
If we'd have learnt anything over the last 5/6 years under Southgate, we'd have come out with a comfortable 3-0/3-1 win tonight, without any danger. Instead, we win 2-1 with 10 men. Admittedly, Italy didn't have many clear-cut chances, but with a one-goal advantage anything can happen and we could easily have drawn that 2-2. Oh how the reactions would have been different had that happened. Just about scraped through ain't good enough for me, and shouldn't be for the rest who genuinely want us to have a chance of winning something. You need to build a mentality. And I see just the same, old England under Southgate!
