Best fish and chips ?
Re: Best fish and chips ?
I’m a big fan of Banny’s fish and chips. Their flavoured fish are brilliant too, with Tikka fish being my favourite.

Re: Best fish and chips ?
It was still good as of last week,
You don't get fish as good as that from anywhere else.
Pity they don't wrap it paper though. Polystyrene is the killer of fish and chips.

Got a surprise for you fella.... if you ask the nice lady, she'll wrap in paper for you - I ask every week!!!Bin Ont Turf wrote: ↑Sat Mar 25, 2023 8:43 pmIt was still good as of last week,

Re: Best fish and chips ?
Used to go there when it was under the previous owners, maybe five years or so ago? Only been once since they left and it wasn't as good. Might give it another go if you rate it highly.
For me, good fish & chips is about quality than quantity.

Cemetery Chippy was as brilliant as ever last week.
Wouldn't waste any money on Belfields, place is terrible.
If in Accy, Church St Chippy is spot on apart from their peas, which are completely tasteless

I too loved just up the road from the Chemic - in 1994. That was one weird pub!TheFamilyCat wrote: ↑Sat Mar 25, 2023 8:01 pmI lived round the corner from The Chemic and went to the chippy once a week. It was always good but it's 20 years since I lived there so no idea now.
Edit: just seen jdrobbo's reply. Pleased to read it's still going. I don't go that way much these days but will call in when I'm next up there.

I was living there at the time. Back in 1993, but I've been to Bailey's many times since. When I was working near Southend, I went nearly every Friday after work. Superb place.

Re: Best fish and chips ?
Its sad to say, but the best fish and chips I have found, are in a village called Mandria,in Cyprus.I know Cyprus potatoes are legendery though, but they should rename it whale and chips instead, the portions are huge, 1 portion would surely feed two,I kid you not! Good value too, at 11 euros with bread and pot of tea included the last time we went and that was eat in!
Next time we are there,I,m going for the Childs portion!!!

My old favourite was Bellfields, but that was about 10-15 years ago. it changed owners and went downhill in my opinion.
Now its Banny's on Trafalgar or Padiham road Chippery used to be the old post office next to Oddies

Village chippy in Huncoat is very good. They have a choice of puddings, Hollands or Clayton park, which are the best IMO.
You also get a choice of curry sauce too. They do an Irish one, which is a bit hotter and slightly sweet.

I must give a shout to the fish n chip shop in Sutton in Craven, fried in beef dripping, as it should be, mind you I may be a bit biased as it’s owned by a family member.

It’s had one mention but here’s another for Worsthorne chippy. Dean and Margaret run a great little place, he seems to get the batter right every time. Not open match days, unless it’s a midweek game

Re: Best fish and chips ?
When I was a lad,me mam used to send me down to that chippy with 2 bowls. They would fill both, with whatever you wanted.
No polystyrene those days.It was owned and run by willie macinnis,ex pro goalkeeper for Stanley before they went into admin in the 60,s!
Used to work with Willie at Faircloughs, bottom of Bolton Ave.
Glad to hear its doing well!!

It was called Holloways back in the early 80’s when I lived up Briercliffe Road. It was the best chippy around for miles then and people used to queue out of the shop and a fair way down Briercliffe Road when it was Friday chippy tea time.

Re: Best fish and chips ?
Very suprised at the amount of love for Banny's as I thought it was rubbish 3 times out of 3 and I won't be going back.
Most chippy's aren't worth bothering with due to poor quality of product or process.
A mate was a fryer and reckoned the key to getting it right is good fish with any excess moisture dried off the surface, fresh batter mix, and replacing the oil often.
Gonna try one of these places on the strength of the recommendations whilst i'm down for the Sunderland game.
I know a few good ones in the North East but that's not likely to be much use to you lot.

I’m also not that impressed with the traditional fish & chips from Banny’s but do like the Indian fish & chips from therewhat_no_pies wrote: ↑Sun Mar 26, 2023 7:14 pmVery suprised at the amount of love for Banny's as I thought it was rubbish 3 times out of 3 and I won't be going back.

Re: Best fish and chips ?
Can’t think of anything worse than Indian Fish and Chips. I walk past the chippy on Lyndhurst Rd on a match day and it makes me gip. Whatever they use as oil is not good.

Re: Best fish and chips ?
It’s not fish & chips from an Indian, it’s what they’ve marinaded the fish in prior to cooking, along with the curry sauce served alongside it

Re: Best fish and chips ?
Pendle st was brilliant back in my gawthorpe day's 50 year's ago, remember it like it was yesterday, no better chippy than park view now though, you've only gotta look at the queues on match day's, fish to die for as the saying goes. But going further afield a great chippy over on the east coast in Hornsea.

Re: Best fish and chips ?
I'd suggest its more the location than the product that gets many going on match days, I wouldn't say they are fantastic but its OK.alwaysaclaret wrote: ↑Tue Mar 28, 2023 9:09 amno better chippy than park view now though, you've only gotta look at the queues on match day's, fish to die for as the saying goes.
Re: Best fish and chips ?
Banny's on Trafalgar Street is consistently first-rate.
Either the regular haddock and chips, or the splendid tikka fish & chips for a different twist.
Bird's in Rosegrove has always been very good, but cash only, and I rarely have any when I need it.
Slightly out of the area, The Bridge chippy, on the main road to Rochdale (technically Norden) is brilliant. They do Greek kebabs (so you'd expect it to be a second-rate chippy) but they do first-class fish and chips.

Personally think the Bannys in Colne has gone downhill since they started having to mess about with takeaway orders on JustEat.

Re: Best fish and chips ?
I agree, I'm a great believer in sticking to what people should know as their own cuisine & specialise in, I wouldn't go to a English place for a Chinese meal & I wouldn't go to a Chinese place for a English meal the same applies to the Indian which I'd only go to for a curry or something along them lines.
Re: Best fish and chips ?
Correct....doubt they are queuing out of the door any other day, average but edible I'd saybuzzclarets79 wrote: ↑Tue Mar 28, 2023 1:33 pmI'd suggest its more the location than the product that gets many going on match days, I wouldn't say they are fantastic but its OK.

It's known as Old Man Greenwood's now. Still a very good chippy.
