Change of colours

Post by No Ney Never » Sun Mar 26, 2023 6:16 pm

As many of you who know your history of Burnley FC, we didn't start out in 1882 wearing claret and blue, it wasn't until 1910 that these became our club colours.
If we were to adopt new colours again, what would you like to see us in?

It is a bit like asking ‘if we weren’t Burnley Football Club, who would you want us to be…’ :)

I’ve always been very cocky about, but confused by, the fact that we are definitively ‘The Clarets’, even though there are several other clubs who play in claret, and we weren’t the originals. I know we’ve had other nicknames down the years, but was there ever a time when Villa/West Ham/Scunny were ‘The Clarets’?

It’s a bit like asking what airline would you like to be flying with when your plane has engine failure and crashes into the ocean killing everyone on board.

In all seriousness though, any colour would be fine as long as the shirt had the logo of an asian gambling firm printed onto it.

Not a colour but if we could become sort of camouflaged/blended into the surroundings like the creature in Predator, perhaps?

Can you imagine defenders trying to deal with Benson and Zaroury when they can't even see them?.

Okay, I'll give an answer which isn't claret and blue.

We played in green just before claret and blue, and amber and black stripes before that. So those would be good options. Pink and red too but less keen on those. And let's not dwell on the blue and white for too long...

We also used a darker blue early in our history and I think that, with claret, could be a good choice for home colours.

Slight tangent but have we ever been nicknamed The Bulls, after the Bull Hotel?

The clue is not in the answers, because the question is if we were to change colours, not would you like to change colours.

The 1889 is described as the memorial kit, what was it in memory of?

I think that 'come on you greens' might be a bit tame.

Must admit that I liked the all claret strip of circa 2005. But always prefer the claret and blue shirt, white shorts and and white socks.

We should have kept it for this season then!

Would have been known as our winning shirt

I can tolerate our away kit colours, but claret and blue really is the best coloured football kit in existence.

As Claret & Blue hasn’t really proved that popular only lasting 112 years and counting I’d say something along the lines of Claret & Blue for me would be good

Nice link

Found it interesting we had only been wearing claret and blue for 4 years when we won the FA cup, always thought we'd adopted claret around the turn of the century

Seem to recall that early in Barry Kilby's time as chairman he copyrighted "The Clarets" on behalf of the club as nobody else had. If I do remember rightly then other clubs, Villa, WHU etc would have to pay Burnley royalties if they used it.

Continue wearing claret and blue but add a trilby fedora with a feather, like this

Are you suggesting that adopting new colours next season makes little sense as we will get thrashed left right and centre and relegated?

That's a bit like buying a new car when you can't drive........

Of the ones in that link, if we had to revert to a previous colour scheme I think the pink and white stripes would be the most unique.

No other league team uses pink in their home shirt.

We are known as The Clarets and we supposedly play in claret and blue, but is claret actually a colour? Wouldn’t burgundy be a more accurate description of the principal colour we play in? I mean nowhere else is claret used to describe a colour. And anyway claret is the English name for Bordeaux wine.
Interesting that “claret” was the name chosen to describe the colour of a football kit. Was it then Aston Villa that coined the phrase “claret and blue” or was that us?
