What’s your non clarets hobby?

Post by davideyresleftear » Mon Mar 27, 2023 3:38 pm

My pub going days have slowed down to the point where I’d rather be in bed for 10 than have a hangover, but I’d like to have a new hobby.

I quite fancy model painting, maybe dioramas or something like that. It seems meditative. Part of me thinks I shouldn’t and that it doesn’t have a productive result or a point, but does a hobby need to have a point? Can’t it be a thing in itself without needing an end result.

What’s your thing or your hobby?

LEGO, as sad as that sounds.

Never thought I'd be into LEGO at 36 but here we are. It feels very rewarding when you finish a big build, it's very calming as well (until you can't find a piece that is).

Suppose it's not too dissimilar to a 3D jigsaw in a way.

Mines Football Manager. It was as a kid (in a different guise back then) and a teen, then I discovered going out and doing what normal young lads do, now I have a family I hardly go out due to commitments, so I get a bottle of wine and return to FM on nights I’m not doing anything,

British beach walks
Keeping the West Yorkshire Clarets group running … if you can call that a hobby!?

I thought about Lego as well because like you said, it looks like it would be calming. And you also have something cool at the end of it. The only thing that put me off is the prices on some of the pieces I really like. The millennium falcon is over £700!

I wouldn't say it's a hobby but I recently finished this Titanic model. It's a Chinese copy and about 25% of the price of real Lego.

Yeah I dread to think how much I've spent on it now. It's oddly addictive as well, once you've finished one you need your next hit!

Favourite build to date is probably the Ghostbusters HQ, I fitted a light kit to it as well, looks fantastic!

Ahh and the Home Alone house, how could I forget that?

Looks incredible! Do you have a link at all? My wife is Titanic obsessed but we've both been put off by the price of the official one.

Go to www.aliexpress.com There's loads of different sellers, you should be looking to pay around £150/£160 versus £700+ for real Lego. Most do not include an official box, it just comes in a standard cardboard box. Seeing as the official box is not genuine either I figured it didn't matter

It's identical to Lego in every way expect it doesn't have the little "Lego" logo on the dimples.

The lights are £30 extra and the instructions are all in Cantonese, but you can use Google translate to figure it out

My hobby is flying historic aircraft.

I was halfway through getting my pilots licence then figured there was no real point continuing as I wouldn't be allowed to carry passengers due to having type 1 diabetes.

So now I just fly in other people's planes instead.

I won't bore you with a list of flights but this was me in my favourite one so far, a Mig15

Started learning guitar ..using You Tube videos and a beginner book..during lockdown and have kept this up. Surprising how quickly a couple of hours passes whenever I pick it up and start strumming away at dodgy versions of favourite songs.
Also enjoy walking every day and playing walking football, especially when it's genuinely competitive.

I write and when the commission gets a green light it's a bit of a job too! Currently working on a new drama for Radio Four. Went through a stage of running 5k and 10k during one of the lockdowns and really got into it, hoping to do a Parkrun this week or next to get back into it. I also like to play a few rounds of GeoGuessr to kill the time every now and again.

Something I do myself, mainly soul music, been to the States and found a few northern soul tunes, got into some dodgy areas, Baltimore, Philly, East coast. Met the Door Wop guys by chance in Philly and they took us on the radio station they have to talk about soul over the pond. So friendly they took us to the diner Sinatra used when he did the short drive from New York.
Burnley is a great place to hear northern and rare soul. Just yesterday a dj spun JD Bryant I wont be coming back. on the holy grail soul label Shrine, that's way over the 10 grand mark. Original I should say, that was at the Burnleys Lost Souls dayer, which I'm told had a massive national reputation. Mostly attended by those wanting to hear rare and underplayed, from Hull, Southport Manchester and dare I say Leeds/ Bradford which is handy for Manchester road station. Regular stays by travellers at Rosehill house and Holiday Express. Great to see them dancing to some big sounds. Shrine only made 20 releases and they sadly bombed, then the Washington studio burnt down during the King riots it seemed all was lost and who cared anyway. Well the Brits did and somehow the soul boys tracked down most of them and now they command huge money. Try the JD Bryant above or The Prophets "One gold piece" soul heaven.

Crown green bowls. Been doing it almost as long as watching Burnley. Gets difficult when the two seasons overlap but Burnley tends to get the nod especially when we're doing well. Should be in a final night on Friday but the Turf is far more of an attraction 😁

Shooting. Any discipline really, love the clays but I’ll shoot with anything.

And my motorbike. That was my main non BFC passion for years but I’m older now and that self preservation gene has taken over. Still get out now and then, but hardly ever at the weekends (roads crowded) and only in the sunshine.

I don’t think it needs an end result necessarily.

The main purpose, in my opinion, should be something that you enjoy doing and perhaps more importantly, don’t feel that you’ve wasted time by doing it.

If you ever think that there’s something that you could be doing that you’d prefer - move on to that. A hobby should be something that you can jump in and out of as your time and motivation allows.

I’ve started learning Ableton but it’s a while since I sat down with it due to other things getting in the way. That and I often feel a bit ignorant sat on that while the missus is in the room :D

If I had my way, the outcome would be the next big dance track but realistically I’ll have a thousand and one unfinished works (symphonies / sympothy might be pushing it way too far) that never see the light of day.

Key thing is, I enjoy it and there doesn’t have to be a finished article at the end of it.

I’m not going but I saw a book face post about ‘Retro at Townley’, a weekender in May.

Looked to have a half decent line up, in and amongst a few that I’d class as more on the commercial / cheesy side of the early nineties scene.

Aside from searching for additions to my Whitechapel Murders book collection I really enjoy making beer. There are some great beermaking kits around nowadays.

Is it a good way to really learn / understand the fundamentals, with beer kits? I’ve toyed with the idea of making beer and potentially, gin. I suspect, even at a basic level, gin making might be a pretty expensive thing to try, if done properly.

Great post pal. I never tire from listening to tracks like One Gold Piece.

At the age of 78 and without transport I like to get to matches at grounds I have not been to .
On Saturday I travelled on Lincoln Supporters Club coach to Fleetwood which just leaves me with Salford, Harrogate and Sutton as the only clubs Where I have not seen a game .

Also I walk every morning (weather permitting) around the Lincoln Area - Cathedral and Castle to Sincil Bank ( Football Ground) calling for a light brunch somewhere on route and completing aroun 8 to 10 kilometres before returning home .

DCW - I can’t speak for gin but I reckon that you could purchase a pretty decent beer making start up kit for around £40-50. Some suppliers do starter sets with a starter beer. Brew2Bottle of Burnley are a decent starting point (other suppliers are available). I have never brewed from base malt, only from kits. I have found through experience and experiment that I can adapt the kit beers as necessary through the use of different fermentables, dry-hopping etc.... to create beers that I really enjoy. The experimentation is a part of the fun. Cleanliness at every stage is the key to making a good brew.

Thanks eastanglian - I’ll definitely give it a whirl.

you aren't helping him much if you don't drop the link !! :D drop it so we can have a look :)
https://youtube.com/@sora5206

Mainly Overwatch stuff, he has some plans to do collaborations with some gamers in the USA who got in contact with him.

He's planning a Pokémon channel soon.

He's just switched jobs, to working nights, so hasn't put much up lately.
He had started increasing viewer numbers but he got a telling off over copyright stuff so YouTube stopped sharing his videos with others

Discovering ‘new to me’ punk music, listening to what music I do own, jigsaws, cryptic crosswords, reading and best of all, solitude.
