Pro's and con's of promotion

Post by tiger76 » Thu Mar 30, 2023 10:33 am

It seems bizarre but I know there is mixed emotions from some supporters regarding our almost certain return to the PL, so worth asking what folks think about it good and bad.

Pro's

Naturally a windfall of 100m+.
A chance to test ourselves against the best in the country.
Opportunity to bloody some big teams noses again.
Potential to attract better players due to the lure of the PL.
Perhaps more likely to retain VK for longer.
The possibility of outside investment increases.
We should be able to keep this exciting squad together for at least a season.
Season tickets sold out.

Con's

Less local derbies.
More playacting to enjoy.
The likes of Arteta, Klopp and Pep will no doubt whinge if or when we beat them.
VAR although that is likely to came into the Champ soon anyway.
Probably less Saturday 3PM kick-off's.
Less chance of being able to obtain walk-on tickets.
We'll win less games and could face the prospect of a relegation battle.
We'll feature last on MOTD most weeks.

The club needs the money to survive.

We will just have to put up with it.

The money is barely a positive as it is almost 100% funnelled out of the club via increased transfer fees, wages and agents costs.

The premier league is a new challenge to this season. Whilst the championship has been enjoyable I do not wish to see us repeat it by hypothetically foregoing promotion. The people who don't want to see us in the premier league because it will be harder lack a little ambition. We will be back as part of the 20 elite clubs in England and I hope to see us there for a long time to come.

Being in the premier league is so important, not just for the club but the whole town.

The bigger gates mean more fans spending money locally - the Sunday fixtures are frustrating for fans. But this is the xtra money that local businesses make that they wouldn’t make on a Sunday.

The exposure the club and the town get on a global scale.

And of course playing week in week out against the best. Yes we will lose more. But the chance to beat the big clubs. The chance to see World Cup winners and genuine superstars in the flesh. The chance to beat the big name managers. And test our exciting young squad in games like this.

Every week having something to play for.

For all its faults. I’d sooner be in the premier league than any other.

Pretty much how I feel, I just hope I don't lose my love for football again like I did last time. Being there to just survive isn't fun, its ok for the odd season but when you cant compete it starts becoming difficult to watch.
I wish I hadn't started thinking about it now

Pros
Money
Seeing Burnley play a different style in the PL

Cons
It's a bit of a list

Ultimately the club needs to be in the PL for the longer term, to allow it to grow/evolve

Also want to see Kompany evolve/grow as our manager and see if he can make the step up (I'm sure he can but it's going to be interesting to watch)

Pros - money, commercial opportunities, keeping Kompany, recruitment, easier to watch games on the telly.

Cons - more difficult to get to games in person, more difficult to avoid numpty pundits and glory hunter supporters.

I really enjoyed the Prem for most of it… last 2 years aside.

I’m excited to see this team and manager take it on and see us play a different brand of football this time around. I’m much more aligned with the new vision the club has. Plus we’ll attract and hopefully sign higher quality players, how good was it watching someone as good as Defour play for us.

Only major two cons for me are not winning as many games and VAR.

Pros
Promotion and Champions party
No need to play those selfish , narrow minded fools on the A666
PNE even more jealous
Good chance of trips to Europe again
The brass

Cons
Even more dodgy refs backed up by worse ones on VAR
Pompous fans of just about every team in league
Agent and player demands

I hate VAR with an absolute passion. I also can’t stand referees who fall for feather like touches appearing to have killed a player all over the pitch.

That said I’m a fan who wants to see my team playing at the highest possible level. Under VK you never know, maybe we’ll trouble the top 6-7 for a season and squeeze into Europe again, or threaten one of the cups?

We have had an enjoyable season, but one which has only been possible because we were in the Premier League for 6 seasons building the squad to sell. We are in the bottom third of clubs in the Championship from a natural income level perspective, and that’s where we’d end up after 3-4 seasons. I’d rather us be fighting to stay in the Premier League and an odd season at the top of the Championship than fighting to stay in the Championship.

I want to see my team come up against some of the best in the world week in week out.

I want to see my team aim for the stars.

I want to see the next Defour.

Said it before, those claiming it’s better in the Championship would soon change their tune after a few seasons. So many clubs in the football league would give anything to be in our position.

When I hear Kompany speak, I don’t hear a man that wants to merely survive. winning is all he knows. We could fail miserably and come straight back down, but I just have this feeling we could do something a bit special next season.

Good list, tiger. Good summary.

Personally I love to see us at the top table, taking on the big boys. I’m not one who minds seeing us lose games and would find winning at a canter without any real competition quite boring after a while too. I’d rather a mix of massively daunting fixtures interspersed by tough and winnable ones.

The extent to which we can all sustain excitement depends on how much ambition ALK show in developing the club on and off the field. I can handle losing games if we’re bringing in exciting players that are developing before us, investing in the ground, merchandising, match day experience, facilities, etc.

Despite being a massive proponent of VAR initially though, that’s the one area I’m not looking forward to. It’s become a farce.

Generally whenever you are promoted to PL one of the big misses for a lot of fans is getting to watch your team what feels a lot less than in the championship. I think that feeling has been amplified this season because of the compressed fixture list after the World Cup because it’s felt like we are playing at home nearly every week. Compare that to the Premier League where there’s been times (especially at the start of a season with international breaks) that you are lucky to see us play at home once a month.

The way we have played this season and beaten teams is something again that we will not be able to replicate in the PL. So watching us make dozens of great chances every game, dominate the ball and score lots of goals is not something we are likely to see much of if we go up.

Flip side is that it will be interesting and exciting to see how all these new players perform against some of the best teams and players in the world and how we hopefully improve and develop as a team. Victories playing the kind of football we do against big teams will feel better than some of the poor teams we have played this season many of which just cannot live with us.

Unfortunately you can’t have a season like we have had without probably getting promotion to the PL but it is going to be tough to enjoy a season as much as this one.

I'm looking forward to how Vincent approaches games in the Premier League.
We all know Sean Dyche used his players and resources in what he felt was the best possible way.
Will Vincent still play the easy on the eye possession game, or will it be a case of horses for courses?
The cons?
If there are to be any, let's worry about them if and when they arise.
Onwards and upwards.

We did a lot right last time we were in the prem, but we also did a lot wrong. The main issue for me was due to some high earners, we gave fat contracts to players who were nowhere near at that level. We stood still for too long and didn't invest in youth.

Last time:
Pro's
Upgrading the training ground
Getting into Europe
Competing on a relatively low budget
Beating the big six on occasions
Expanding our brand worldwide

Cons
Eventually reverting to type and standing still for too long
Game on game of watching the opposition with the ball
We could go months without seeing a win
Brand of football eventually gave us a tag of a boring team to watch
Paying average players 30-50k a week

What I would like to happen this time:

Pro's
Expand and invest on our scouting network
Find new investment
Unearth a few gems and continue with our brand of football
Evolve the model to be like a Brighton where we buy low and sell high and over time increase our standing at the top table.

Cons
As per above, it will be increasingly hard to compete due to the massive gap between certain clubs and us
More defeats
Less saturday games
VAR

This is a good point. This year has been a lot more fun with regular games twice weekly and barely a fortnight between home games. Although also one of the reasons I’m way behind with life stuff!

The infrequency of home games in the PL is one of the reasons I was surprised/disappointed with AP’s response to Fretters about the women’s team not being back in Burnley next season. When you‘ve got one, possibly two PL games per month, no reason the women couldn’t use it for the games on opposite weeks.

AP talked about “sweating the assets” when he arrived. Sure that wasn’t really what he was thinking of, but it’s definitely a way we could get better use out of the ground.

What’s the alternative? Stay in the championship treading water, like so many so called big clubs! I think promotion and maybe staying up, then eventually relegation,. Then go for promotion again is surely healthier for the club and town, than stagnating in the championship, like our neighbours down the M65!

Some personal pros for me - in addition to the beautiful football that our team is now playing.

Looking forward to away games at Brentford, Fulham, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham, West Ham, Crystal Palace and Brighton. £30 away ticket, less over 65 concession. Free public transport travel on my Freedom Pass to all, except Brighton. I'm assuming Southampton and Bournemouth are relegated this season, so will miss out on away travel to St Mary's and Vitality. Similarly, no promotion for Watford this season - that's another Freedom Pass trip. Be great if Millwall can sneak promotion through the play-offs, that's another Freedom Pass away trip for me.

With Vincent Kompany as our manager, I'll also look forward to some games in Europe. OK, I can only use my Freedom Pass to get to Heathrow, but savings on rest of my travel will help towards a flight or two.

I want to see Burnley against the very best of this country, not winning against minor league teams.

Hopefully, Vincent Kompany will remain at the club. Let’s see what he can achieve with our young, talented players.

Pros:
The money
VK will attract players of quality the likes of which most of us have never seen
Brings more money to the town

Cons
most things
The inevitable over the top Dyche love in should Everton survive
Watching Ben Mee play for someone else
Not being able to celebrate a goal because of VAR

IF VK attracts the players I think he will then it could be great fun

I often hear as a positive , "Exposure in the PL helps boost the whole town".
But in the 6 years previous occupation is there anything to actually prove this?

Ironically, it's the one year in the championship that's coinciding with some real, clearly visible improvements being done (re: ground approach area revitalisation).

This… as often Lancaster hits the nail on the head.
There’s plenty about the Prem that can be wearisome in and of itself, but seasons like this don’t happen without our regular participation in it.

No cons for me at all. You want your team to be the best it can be.
This.

I'm amazed anyone would want anything else. Just like I'd prefer to watch Clapton or Santana on guitar to watching Wandering Walter.

Roughly the type of responses I expected, most fans are looking forward to VK pitting his wits against the best in the land.

And fun as our Championship stint has been these lads deserve their opportunity to test their skills at the highest level.

Our previous 2 PL campaigns were a chore as it was apparent that squad had reached it's zenith and was desperately in need of a refresh.

However the squad we have now definitely has the potential to improve, and for that reason alone we should embrace the challenge promotion will bring.

The reality is we do need to visit the Prem on a regular basis otherwise we'll face the prospect of losing our better players and finding ourselves in a similar situation to what Cotterill inherited.

The championship is going to be wonderful when you're p1ssing it.

Ask Rovers how much they've enjoyed life outside the Prem... One season in the third tier possibly?

Helps attract younger fans too. I remember years ago taking my nephew to a friendly against Liverpool and seeing him so excited when he spotted some of their top players warming up in front of him before the game.

Did I enjoy getting stuffed by Man City again recently? Absolutely not, but I appreciated the opportunity to see players such as Kevin de Bruyne and Erling Haaland even though I wanted them to have off days.
