Torquay v Burnley 4 Feb 1986

Post by sandy richardson » Thu Mar 30, 2023 2:13 pm

Attendance at this game: 1335.

Is this our lowest ever league attendance (home or away)?

This was amongst the first few games my Dad took me on, he said it would be better if I started on quiet games, can’t remember it being much smaller attendance than most of my early games to be honest!

Leighton James deep into injury time penalty for a draw.

My memory (which is false when you check the records) is that this was a turning point, this was the game were going out of the league became a reality.

I remember my dad got back to the local and started challenging people why they werent going on.

It was a very wet night.

I think the op is talking about an away game the season before the one you’re referring to. James signed in the summer of 86.

You’re right though. That game was huge, and a late James pen salvaged a point.

I might have been at this game or I might have been at the same fixture the following season.

I'd have been 4 and my Dad took the family down to make a weekend of it.

The corresponding game in 86/7 was the opening day fixture. It was played on the Saturday night and was a 1-1 draw.

Thanks - must've been the earlier one because he wouldn't have taken me to a night game. Waaaaay past bedtime. :)

This was a Tuesday night game. Looking at the results on here, we lost 2-0. The worst kind of 2-0 as well. One just before half-time to dampen hope, and one half way through the second half to kill it off. I remember being surprised at how many had actually come down from Burnley. I was living in the south-west at the time.

I thought we lost 2 0 on the one the OP mentioned. I was at the Saturday night one as well, first game of the season. Is that two Blackburn tickets?

Went to the saturday night game, the 1st of the 86/87 season .. Derrick Parker equalised in a 1-1 draw .. it chucked it down
on that open terrace ..

How come it was played on a Saturday night? Sounds unusual for back then!

Think there is a bit of confusion here.
The game in the thread title was indeed a Tuesday night game where we lost 0-2 in a desperate performance.

The following season saw us draw 1-1 on the opening day - or rather opening night as it was played on the Saturday evening. Derrick Parker did indeed score for us but it was the opening goal 10 minutes from time and Torquay equalised 6 minutes later.

I mentioned on another thread that Burnley played in Torquay's blue away shirt that night, not having realised that The Gulls had changed their shirt colour to yellow that season and we rolled up with our yellow away strip.

I mentioned this game on another thread yesterday. As far as I can see, not counting the pandemic, this was the lowest gate in a league fixture involving Burnley since WW1. It was a cold foggy night. In fact you couldn’t really see much of what was going on at the other end…although for Burnley fans it would have been better not to have seen anything at all. Mark Loram was the difference between two desperately poor sides.

I'd no idea on this but I've just checked up and it's the lowest I've ever seen us play a league game in front of. It was the night I made it to 92 with 91 of them watching Burnley, the exception being Darlington where we didn't play until two seasons later.

Torquay often played their home games on a Saturday night at 7:15. We were running the supporters club coaches then and being Bank Holiday and the M5 problems you used to get, we opted to leave at 11:30 the night before. Then the game was put back from 3 to 7:15. We got there around 5:30 on the Saturday morning.

Ah right presume this was to try and boost their attendance??I know we had a few who played on a Friday night like Stockport and Tranmere but never heard pre tv days of Saturday night kick offs! Late arrival time home for a lot of away fans from Torquay.

The older among you will recall that when the football results appeared at the end of Grandstand the Torquay home games would have an E against them denoting an evening kick off!

Stockport & Tranmere were regulars on Friday nights because of the two Manchester and Liverpool clubs playing on Saturdays with one each usually at home. Not sure of the benefits in playing Saturday night at Torquay. It was a bloody long day out. I think it was my last visit to Plainmoor.

We went to Torquay on a family holiday the summer after they beat us in the Play Offs. We had a walk up to the footy ground and my dad got chatting to the groundsman who must have felt sorry for us as he let us in to have a look round!

SJB - spot on in all accounts. Torquay played a lot of games on Saturday and Friday nights. Don't know why but it certainly wasn't TV dictating it with our line up.

This is a trip down memory lane. Don’t remember too much about the game apart from Leighton James showing a few flashes of skill.

We lived in Paignton at the time so I suspect this is one of the few games my dad would have gone to around then.
