Sunderland match will pause on 15 mins
News from the north east is that tomorrow’s game will pause on 15 mins to allow players to take on fluids those who observe Ramadan.

Nice one. Might have a beer before the game then...usually only takes 15 mins before I need a slash

Re: Sunderland match will pause on 15 mins
I thought it was after sunset they could drink and eat? Sunset tomorrow is at 19:42, not 20:15. Or is it half an hour after sunset?
Re: Sunderland match will pause on 15 mins
What a wonderful gesture.Has this happened before or is it a new initiative?

Re: Sunderland match will pause on 15 mins
There was a game stopped last season. I think it was against Southampton.
If I recall it wasn’t previously announced and there was some initial confusion from supporters as to why the game was stopped
Re: Sunderland match will pause on 15 mins
It was mentioned in the club's e mail this afternoon about the pause after 15 mins, the stadium info ahead of the game e mail.

Makes sense really. Must be tough trying to fast and combine their religion with professional sport.

Re: Sunderland match will pause on 15 mins
I find this situation quite strange insofar as picking a player that the club knows hasn't eaten or taken a drink since sunrise.
If a player was to be seriously injured or God forbid died due to hydration, I can't think of a more cut and dried case of negligence.
The club is fully 100 % knowingly picking a player that has not taken on any liquid before playing.
I know it's extreme but blindingly obvious.

I’m guessing you didn’t read the article put out yesterday by the club on how they support those players observing Ramadan.Nonayforever wrote: ↑Thu Mar 30, 2023 7:40 pmI find this situation quite strange insofar as picking a player that the club knows hasn't eaten or taken a drink since sunrise.

Ramadan has been around a long time ... I am sure professional sportsmen/women know how to observe Ramadan correctly and the sports clubs who they play for ...Nonayforever wrote: ↑Thu Mar 30, 2023 7:40 pmI find this situation quite strange insofar as picking a player that the club knows hasn't eaten or taken a drink since sunrise.

Re: Sunderland match will pause on 15 mins
I think it was Southampton and there hadn’t been any advance info on it thus the confusion.
We confirmed yesterday that we have several first team players who are observing Ramadan.

Re: Sunderland match will pause on 15 mins
It’s been like that, and rightly so, for a while but it’s good that the club are making it known so we know what’s going on when the game stops.Nonayforever wrote: ↑Thu Mar 30, 2023 8:07 pmCheers Tsar,
Very interesting article. The club obviously doing everything they can for any player observing Ramadan.

Re: Sunderland match will pause on 15 mins
Just had a thought.
The upcoming games being moved to evening kick offs could be to our advantage.
Would those observing Ramadan have played if they had been 3pm kick offs?

Are players in a fit state to play if they haven’t eaten ?

Not religious at all but sure I’ve read they can break the fast if it interferes with work safety.
Sunderland will be grateful for the breather.

Who are our players that observe it? We have ‘multiple players’
Zaroury?
Dervisoglu?
Anyone else?

Re: Sunderland match will pause on 15 mins
I’ve often wondered this. I know I certainly wouldn’t be up for running around, never mind at a high intensity for 90 minutes. I imagine they’ll compensate as best they can but still, you’d have to think they’re not going into these games at peak fitness.

Kosovo is a majority Muslim country and Muric's parents are from a Muslim area of what's now Montenegro so could also be him.

Do all players get a break or just those observing Ramadan

Re: Sunderland match will pause on 15 mins
How would that be? (Unless our opponents have a lot of Muslim players.)
I don't fully understand the Ramadan rules and protocols for professional footballers, but if they aren't eating in daylight hours, then 8pm is a lot longer to be fasting than 3pm. (Daylight hours in April are roughly 7am to 8pm)

I'd thought the only god these chaps worshipped was Mammon tbh.
Re: Sunderland match will pause on 15 mins
If you live far enough north for it to be a problem, then you can use Mecca time. For example, if you live in Tromso and Ramadan is at the end of May, the sun wouldn't go down until August - a bit too long to retain fitness!nil_desperandum wrote: ↑Thu Mar 30, 2023 10:11 pmHow would that be? Re: Sunderland match will pause on 15 mins
I hope they defer fast to another time and make a donation instead, especially for a night match. A very personal decision I appreciate and many wont like "cheating" but it is very much allowed in Ramadam. Can't see how they won't be shadows of players otherwise.
Re: Sunderland match will pause on 15 mins
Why does God have such a strict timetable? Surely he's understandable enough to allow fasting to take place in or around Ramadan.

Re: Sunderland match will pause on 15 mins
I don't think it's anything to do with God. It's to do with showing self-discipline, self -sacrifice and respect for a religious tradition.
(Just like not eating meat on a Friday was widely observed at one time in the UK).

No liquid other than water of course because when fasting you can still drink water, I assume you were unaware of that minor detail.Nonayforever wrote: ↑Thu Mar 30, 2023 7:40 pmI find this situation quite strange insofar as picking a player that the club knows hasn't eaten or taken a drink since sunrise.

As a general rule, no liquids allowed including water.HistoricalClaret wrote: ↑Fri Mar 31, 2023 12:27 pmNo liquid other than water of course because when fasting you can still drink water, I assume you were unaware of that minor detail.

Re: Sunderland match will pause on 15 mins
I went to a school with a hell of a lot of Muslim students and during exam periods which coincided with Ramadan their Imans allowed them to consume water due to exceptional circumstances I would expect the same applies to professional sports players.

Wonder if they uphold the Third pillar and stick to the true meaning of Zakat
Re: Sunderland match will pause on 15 mins
It's not a "rule" for children anyway, so far as I know. For children, it's optional as a means of showing support for others, but it's not a religious requirement.HistoricalClaret wrote: ↑Fri Mar 31, 2023 3:18 pmI went to a school with a hell of a lot of Muslim students and during exam periods which coincided with Ramadan their Imans allowed them to consume water due to exceptional circumstances I would expect the same applies to professional sports players.

Re: Sunderland match will pause on 15 mins
I lived in the Middle East for 10 years - my understanding is that Ramadan had concessions built into it for professional athletes actually conducting their profession at the time (that would ordinarily conflict)HistoricalClaret wrote: ↑Fri Mar 31, 2023 3:18 pmI went to a school with a hell of a lot of Muslim students and during exam periods which coincided with Ramadan their Imans allowed them to consume water due to exceptional circumstances I would expect the same applies to professional sports players.

Yeah, after the flare was thrown onto the pitch. 20 mins or so had gone by then though
