Muric 7 - not much to do but did it all fine
Roberts 7 - tried to play the forward passes
THB 7 - good to have him back
Beyer 7 - one weird pass aside he was solid
Maatsen 6 - they stopped his threat really well
Cullen 6 - couldn’t really get the sharp passing going
Brownhill 7* - dynamic movement albeit bit slow on the ball at times
Benson 5 - that was a returning from 3 months out performance if I’ve ever seen one
Tella 5 - he was 9s and 10s before the break but I struggle with him out wide
Zaroury 6 - stuff didn’t really come off for him but still part of our best moves
Barnes 6 - lacked sharpness on several occasions in the box

JBG 6 - created our best chance of the second half and I thought he should have started

Typical post international break showing from us. Good minutes for those returning from injuries and we did have enough chances to score. Credit to Sunderland I thought their press was better than any at the Turf this season, they blocked some key passing lanes really well.

Muric 5 - ponderous and overly risky at times
Roberts 7 - marauded well
Harwood-Bellis 5 - thought he was v rusty and slowed play too much
Beyer 6 - some v good stuff, some v poor stuff
Maatsen 6
Cullen 7
Brownhill 6 - dynamic but backwards too much
Tella 5 - all the attacking lads showed all too brief glimpses
Benson 5
Zaroury 5
Barnes 6 - thought he did alright

Gudmundsson 7 - looked v sharp
Obafemi 6
Vitinho 5

Rusty performance against a well organised team. On another day we put one of those chances away. Ah well. Still enjoyed the game, decent tussle. I think JBG has to start.

Muric 6 lucky the lad was offside
Roberts 6 did nothing wrong but less attacking intent
Maatsen 6 not one of his better games and little forward threat
Thb 6 welcome back
Beyer 6 surprised he got man of the match, big fan of his but almost caught in possession a few times and lost concentration with an awful pass that almost led to a goal from the resulting corner
Cullen 6 not enough going forward tonight and reminiscent of the first month of the season
Brownhill 6 don't think he should be automatic first choice
Zaroury 6 becoming less and less involved recently. Beat his marker easily on occasion but nowhere near as impressive as earlier in the season
Benson 5 off the pace and too negative, went backwards nine times out of ten and played the simple ball.
Tella 6 very quiet first half, improved in second
Barnes 6 some decent hold up play but you wouldn't bank on him to get the winner in a game of few chances

Subs meh

Very reminiscent of the first month or so of the season when the first instinct is to pass backwards rather than look for a positive forward ball. You could argue this was due to the Sunderland press but we have to be better at breaking teams down. Beyer to Thb, back to beyer, over to Roberts, back to Muric, repeat.
If we don't score early we have struggled for a while and we either eventually break teams down late on or it ends up like tonight or Blackpool.
Of course it's hard and maybe stupid to criticise the team this season but we must demand perfection!!!

Muric 6 meh
Roberts 6 meh
Harwood-Bellis 6 v rusty
Beyer 7 made a difference when he came forward
Maatsen 5 poor
Cullen 6 quiet
Brownhill 5 so, so negative. Needed taking off at HT
Tella 6 looked lost
Benson 6 moments
Zaroury 5 needs dropped
Barnes 6 meh. Not a goal scorer

Gudmundsson 7 made a difference
Obafemi 6 looks lively
Vitinho 5 I just cannot explain that substitution, utterly bizarre

All about opinions. I thought Brownhill looked knackered by the hour. His first thought was to go backwards most of the evening. But - as I say - others will have a different opinion. I was staggered he played 90 to be honest

Too many who were playing way below their usual levels, tonight. Sunderland played us well and we just couldn’t adapt and work out how to counter them.

Very slow in possession, too much backwards passing and uncharacteristically poor passing.

Cullen was his usual neat and tidy self, rarely if ever giving the ball away. He didn’t have a great deal of help from Brownhill who seemed to be playing with blinkers on when it came to forward play. He did though play one superb ball for Benson, who fluffed his lines.

Not a great display by our high standard - hopefully we’ve got the poor display out of the way and normal service will resume over Easter.

From tv
Muric 7 a bit slow passing the ball, but did his job
Roberts 7 worked up and down the pitch
THB 6 steady away, good to see him back
Beyer 7 tried his best to get things moving, mom
Maatsen 6 not one of his best games tonight
Benson 6 looked rusty, should have been subbed earlier
Cullen 7 too much sideways passing, he always looks better with Cork alongside.
Brownhill 7 he was involved in all our best moves going forward.
Zaroury 6 he has been off the boil for a few weeks, needs to get back to basics
Tella 6 he is not a winger, get him inside
Barnes 6 some nice lay offs but nothing in the box apart from the miss

JBG 6 some nice touches but didn't get to grips
Sunderland did well and competed well in midfield: earlier in the season I thought we controlled games better with Cullen, Cork and Brownhill in midfield, getting through the lines much better. I can't understand why this midfield threesome isn't being used more.

Muric - 5

Roberts - 7*
THB - 5 - rusty at best
Beyer - 7
Maatsen - 6

Cullen - 6
Brownhill - 5 - staggered he played 90 mins. Looked out on his feet by the hour imo
Tella - 5

Zaroury - 5
Barnes - 7
Benson - 5

JBG - 7

We looked like a team that had racked a lot of miles up over the week. THB, Brownhill and Benson looked rusty. Sunderland did a job on us - had a plan and stuck to it. They could have nicked it last 15 to be fair. Helped by another shocking referee performance from Gillet. How we had two booked and they had none booked us staggering

Point gained - on to the next one

Tbh I think that was the worst home performance of the season, but what a season it’s been so I’m not going to give ratings as I think they’ve earned one off night given the performance of every home game up to tonight.
They pressed us well, I thought they’d tire come 2nd half, but they did well, we were too slow and not positive enough but it’s still a point off the worst home performance of a stunning season.

He was involved in our two biggest chances, won possession back numerous times which is more than the majority did. Should have been hauled off though as he looked knackered. Either way, given he's been out a while I thought he was more than decent.

Tired and rusty performance against hard working opposition. This was the first time we looked like we had run out of ideas under Kompany. Tella coming off a purple patch and the rest of our more creative players on a relative dip in form. Would like to have seen Cork involved but sometimes there's only a point there for you and we took it.

A pity he spent half of it playing on the right wing in that case.
He's no more a winger than Ben Mee is a left back.

The game was crying out for the composure of Cork.

A very poor performance overall. VK hasn't got much wrong this season but he got it wrong tonight.
I can't understand why Ekdal was dropped, unless he has a knock from International duty? JBG should have started for Benson as well. Again, did he have a knock?
We looked disjointed with Tella, Zaroury and Benson all in the starting 11. You need one of those three to be the playmaker and none of them really are.
The really disappointing thing was we didn't really look like stretching the game all night. Their GK had very little to do and we were fortunate to see the ball bounce back off the bar in the 2nd half.
Personally I thought THB was dreadful with the ball, far too slow and ponderous. It's his first game back so bound to be rusty though. However, it just invited Sunderland on all night and made it more difficult for us to get forward. Brownhill just played the percentage pass all night and Benson looked similar to THB in as much as he's clearly rusty. Too many unnecessary changes and it showed IMO.

I’d agree with the starting line up in hindsight that Benson would have been better coming off the bench.

Decent game that. We were way off it and they were at the top of their game. Some rusty performances from those returning from injury and some leggy performances from those who have been away. 13 players on international duty and we have to play on the Friday night?

Muric 6 fine but too ponderous toward the end

Roberts 7

Harwood-Bellis 5 rusty, but they did a good job and cut his long range passing options out

Beyer 6 lol at that pass out for the corner. Sounded like he'll be staying from his MOM interview afterwards.

Maatsen 5 targeted

Cullen 6 leggy and man marked but still a over the gaff

Brownhill 6 involved in a lot of good stuff but spent far too much time out on the right

Tella 5 should be through the middle

Zaroury 5 really not his day

Benson 4 awful. Also really needs to cut out the diving, mainly as he's not very good at it.

Barnes 6 odd one, he was pretty good until he got near the box

Gudmundsson 6 gave us a bit more guile in the middle and created a couple of decent chances

We needed that to play our way back in ahead of the two big uns next week. The way we play, everyone needs to have some game time. Having half the squad away with such little time to prepare isn't helpful.

Still, another point and it hardly matters given we're miles ahead.

Cullen, whilst not his usual self granted, was our best player by a mile. Still a solid performance from him and some of the 4 ratings are a joke.

It is normal not to win every week. Sunderland are a decent team and their plan worked. One of the best teams to play at the Turf this season. Constantly kept their shape and could almost have nicked it towards the end. We kept the home record and got a decent point. It will have no barring on the season as a whole and we move on.

THB 6 seemed to go more sideways with him in side
Beyer 7 mom only player who stood out for me
Maatsen 6
Cullen 6
Brownhill 6
Benson 5
Tella 6
Zaroury 5
Barnes 5. A 4 in the box though

Far too slow in possession and build up but Sunderland set up well against us and pressed us well. Think Obafemi should have had more time on pitch and Barnes taken off sooner.

Poor tonight. Too slow. Sunderland pressed high then backed off quickly. Nobody seemed to want to take a risk.
