Today's Football 01/04

Post by claretburns » Sat Apr 01, 2023 10:48 am

A packed schedule today of football throughout the Premier League, EFL and Europe.

Early kicks at 12:30 are Man City v Liverpool in the Premier League on BT Sport. Preston v Blackpool live on Sky and Luton v Watford on the red button.

At 3pm a few good fixtures in the Championship, the South Wales Derby Cardiff v Swansea, Relegation v Promotion as Huddersfield face Middlesbrough, Norwich v Sheff Utd and a play off battle West Brom v Millwall.

In League One no game for relegation threatened Accrington Stanley today, I presume they were scheduled to play Bolton or Plymouth but it has been postponed for the FL Trophy Final tomorrow. In a promotion game Derby host Ipswich.

League Two's early game is play off chasing Bradford at home to Grimsby, at 3pm there is a decent Promotion clash between Leyton Orient and Carlisle.

Then once all that is done at 17:30 on Sky we have a Bundesliga title clash as Bayern host Dortmund, Thomas Tuchel's first game in charge of Bayern against his former club.

Bit of a dilemma for the 12.30 k.o. slot for viewing.
Citeh v Liverpool stands out, but i can see PNE/Lashers game being a bit tasty. Blackpool could really do with the points.

C'mon Norwich and Udders, could be a tricky day on the road for both our nearest challengers hopefully.

A couple of big Prem games in the relegation battle.

Crystal Palace-Leicester.
Notts Forest-Wolves

They are the ultimate 6 pointers particularly at this late stage of the season.

Also tomorrow West Ham v Southampton, you'd have the feeling anything but a West Ham win and Moyes could be gone.

If rumours are true he'll be potted at the end of the season anyway whether West Ham survive or not.

Strange season they are having doing really well in Europe again, yet struggling to pull clear of the bottom 3.

I have the same dilemma. I’m watching both so far from my lofty position in the digital stand. The lancahshire derby actually looks the better game so far, particularly as Blackpool are going to have to go for it now

Excellent example of playing out from the back from Liverpool. City suckered into the high press and Liverpool just broke

Grealish on fire at both ends of the pitch.

Firstly, runs all the way back to cut out a second goal for L'pool.

Then, immediately afterwards he gets the assist that creates tap in equalizer for City.

1-1

A positive to come out of the hammering we took at City, a lot of Spurs fans are pointing to that as a reason not to appoint Kompany. Think it’s quite apparent there are a lot of top level teams that could have suffered the same fate as us.

I honestly don’t understand the speculation. It’s just not a sensible move for VK. If he does NOT get the City job when Pep retires it will be because he’s not proven beyond Burnley. That risk is something that will be a conversation going on behind the scenes. If City’s management/owners say to him they want him to take an interim position, it will be with Everton or Leeds, possibly Wolves (assuming each are in the PL at the time). I can’t see him moving away from the Manchester area and would seek such an interim position that is commutable

It’s not that long ago quite a few posters on here were saying they wouldn’t want Jack Grealish at Burnley FC. I often wonder what they think now.

It's not often you see a player at a top club just constantly switch off but take a look at Alexander-Arnold for that Grealish goal, that would unacceptable at non league level

Even though he cost a fortune (not his fault) it just shows you what happens when you give a player time, he looked a shell of himself last season but today he's looked every bit a Man City player

Vincent Kompany needs to prove himself in the Premier League with Burnley before he considers any other roles. He's more than smart enough to know that.

Lampard and Gerrard made the mistake of moving to new roles with Premier League clubs when they weren't ready for that level. It could only end one way. VK knows that.

A season or two with Burnley in top ten, a decent run in Europa League, at least, plus one or two good cup runs will demonstrate he's ready for a "big" club. Who knows, by that time Burnley may be that big club.

Luton bang in the race for 2nd now, especially if Boro and Sheff Utd drop points today.

Watford facing the prospect of another season in the Championship.

Nobbers probably have left it too late to make the top 6, well Blackpool are heading back to League 1.

I bet Rob Edwards Luton’s manager, enjoyed a certain amount of schadenfreude via Luton’s win over his previous employer Watford as it puts them in possible contention for an automatic promotion place and an almost certain play off slot, whereas Roy’s Watford are well adrift of even a play off. Almost the definition of karma.

It sure would be fun to see what the Premier League make of Kenilworth Road.

Roy is now at Palace, Wilder is Watford's manager these days.

Kenilworth Road will be an almighty culture shock for the Prem players.

Luton are making a strong challenge to Sheff U and MBoro and they have Boro to play at home in a couple of weeks. Cant see them catching both though. 10 points ahead of 7th now though - so should be in the play-offs.
