Pies on the turf

Not had one in years. Mainly due to reading on here how bad they apparently are.

Well had one on Friday (steak and pepper) and was as good as any ‘football pie’.

Not quite up there with Hulls gyros and chips. But good nonetheless!

No excuse for the low standard of catering

I’ve heard that next season, it will be Haffners supplying the pies for the Turf. Not sure if true, but welcome news if so.

Not bought one in protest, after they stopped doing the mushy peas :o

This is the company that supplies Brighton, their Chicken, Gammon and Leek pie is superior to any pie I've had at a football ground.

for £3.50 why can’t they be same standard of a bakery?

I've said for a while that if we're only going to one real option for hot food on the turf (I don't include the hot dogs in that) we should be doing that option right.

Pie, chips, peas, gravy and red cabbage for a fiver would make it much more appealing.

I suppose they need to learn how to stop burning the pies before they can master chips and peas, however.

£4 for the steak and pepper one and mine was hotter than the sun on Friday.
Either they are cold or they’ve been nuked.
Never understood why someone at the club has not seen the opportunity to improve the quality of the food and variety of choices whilst we are getting such big crowds. They should also have more food kiosks - there’s plenty of room and lots of people just don’t bother eating because of the lengths of the queues. Our food and drink facilities for fans are still what you would expect in a bottom tier ground and we have had not that far off a billion pounds in revenue in the last decade or so to make improvements.

If it is Levy, and I believe the staff know they are being transferred to them, then it’s a company that have deals with seven current Premier League clubs.

Good news. I wonder if the current match day staff will be offered a chance to keep their positions?

Edit - Apologies, just re—read your post which suggests that the staff are being retained.

I’m told they will move and work for Levy. It will be through TUPE as it was when we outsourced the catering just over ten years ago before bringing it back in house.

The deal with Levy looks interesting. They’ve got some quite innovative systems at other clubs (albeit, admittedly, at newer grounds) but certainly anything that helps drive up quality of the offering and drive down the waiting times at HT would be very welcome!

It’s 90 minutes at the footy. It’s hardly going to be a gastronomic tour of the northwest.

Which will prompt more whining on here.

Fwiw spent £15 at hull on half time food. And was worth every penny. But the pie on Friday was spot on. With a drink and a twix. £6. Can’t argue with that.

But it’s not just 90 minutes at the footy.

Not for those travelling from far and wide and might be pushed for time. I’ve arrived late on many occasions down the years, and had no choice but to choose from the HT offerings at the Turf.

I’d much rather give £5-£10 to the club, as opposed to a service station.

The catering at Burnley has been substandard for years, some of the catering staff (not all) are downright rude and I know for a fact that any unused hotdogs have been re-heated for the next match. Glad to hear it's changing next year, I just hope the crappy attitude of some of the staff changes with it.

You are right, it’s not just 90 minutes at the footy.

It’s rare I buy anything but a few years ago I was in a rush and bought a pie. Never again, I burned my mouth and the base of the pie was black. I was offered a voucher for another pie which I declined. I wasn’t going to risk it again.

I did. actually buy a pie at Hull recently and it was as good a pie as I’ve ever had.

Some clubs have considerably improved their concourse catering over the years but ours has gone backwards. Fifty years ago you could get fish & chips on the Turf. What is it today? A pie, a rollover hotdog or an overpriced Twix?

Not bad at all but they are either lukewarm ( not acceptable) or scolding. Not often anything in between. The standard of hot drinks and the speed of service are abysmal. Didn’t know powdered milk was still a thing. Not Premier League standard that’s for sure. 5 star light shows 2 star catering.

I love the meat and potato pies ( Hollands).
The only issue is the variation in heat. I have returned cold ones, I have had outrageously hot ones , which have resulted in opening up the bongela for the roof of my mouth.

Can’t really disagree with any of that.

Two areas which I thought would be ripe for improvement under the new regime, namely ticketing and catering, have actually regressed, which is bizarre.

Oh my word, they do Spurs who sell beavertown beer. If that happens I’ll be a happy man!

Hoping these guys can get the catering sorted, get us served quicker.

A rollover and a lukewarm hollands pie is no offering. Do hope they switch to Haffners and keep a local feel.

The Gyros and chips at Hull shows what innovative offerings you can get at grounds.

Take a look at FootyScran on Twitter to see how far behind Burnley is when it comes to catering. Got faith that Pace is on it though with the improvements, same with ticketing and the shop. Would be nice to see us embrace local companies, especially in the fanzone.

If anyone follows ‘Footy Scran’ on Twitter they will know all too well how poor our ‘offering’ is. Clubs are putting out some superb stuff these days (Yorkshire Pudding wraps, Roasties and gravy, pork, stuffing and apple sauce baguettes, gyros/kebabs etc). The humble Holland’s Pie, instant coffee, PG Tips with powdered milk and Bovril that is half gritty granules is something most of the country has moved with the times on.

With all that is so good at the club currently, I really do feel this is one of the most pressing and obvious ‘fan’ improvements for the club to take seriously. The concourses too, for that matter, look basically the same as they did in 1996 with regards to the Jimmy Mac/James Hargreaves. They should spend some money on a total refit of the catering operations in both and hopefully the new supplier mentioned above will bring some innovation on the menu. It’s rare I eat at Turf Moor, but that’s just because of the offering - change it and I’ll turn down my Dad’s offer of a bacon butty at my parents house pre-game and get something at the Turf!

I like the Peppered Steak pies, but you need to buy them when you go in, to eat at half time, because they can take the skin off the top of your mouth.
City is the only ground where the catering has been spot on. Quick, quality and very reasonable.

I think there was a fan survey a while ago that asked 'would you be happy to pay slightly more to receive a better quality of product' or something along the lines of that. I'd like to think the majority would answer 'yes' but I'm aware not everyone is in a position to pay more than they already do for their match day experience.

I'm with you. I'd rather pay more to have improved quality and choice, like at Hull by all accounts. Though I do think the club could do more for the price points they currently offer.

Hollands have always been a decent-ish match day pie IMO. You’d need to go up to £5/6 for a quality pie and City’s ( though excellent ) was something like that ? Our culinary offering is pretty moderate to say the least , but space is our enemy , you’d need to join up 2 out of 3 kiosks which wouldn’t leave enough exit /“ safety “ space . Also the booze serving set up is attrociois , no or little pre pouring and horrific queues . They should set up mini kiosk /hot dog style stands at h/t doing just bottles that could rattle through those who just want fast beer only . Even that maybe impossible due to even plastic bottles needing pouring , I think ?

The supporter experience has needed an overhaul for years. The food offering is abysmal, the lager offering is bad (one up from abysmal now we have an alternative to carlsberg) and the service…..is there a word worse than abysmal? Slow is an understatement. With common sense and organisation it can improve, and it doesn’t take much at all.

This moves me on to the scores at half time. The PA is inaudible, and on the occasions I can hear it, they only ever read out the half time scores from the championship and no other English leagues! The mobile phone coverage is non-existent (although I don’t think that’s the clubs fault however they could offer decent WiFi.)

I think pace will sort it, and this news has to be positive as it can’t get any worse

If people like the current offering, fair enough, but please, please let us not tolerate low standards, that is guaranteed to block improvement.

Catering and drinks akin to an American stadium would be fantastic, ideally with redesigned concourse / eating areas but we can’t have everything. The Levy link is an interesting first step.

It isn’t just the Turf either, the town has a few good real ale pubs such as Bridge and New Brewm but no decent craft beer gastro eateries like are found in many other places here and abroad. When it comes to food it is slim pickings.

Spot on, completely agree on all points.

Carlsberg is awful. I never see anyone order it, despite it costing a £ less. I wouldn’t drink it over San Miguel if it was free

San Miguel I can go with as a lager, but if all levy do is put Beavertown on like at Spurs I’ll be overjoyed 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻 If they pre pour them so we can all get one in less than 20 minutes, even better!

Food wise - praying for some revolutionary changes to our hollands pie/rollover 🤮 offering.

I know we’re off on a tangent somewhat, but just a point on phone service. I cannot get any mobile data in Burnley Town Centre, never mind the Turf. It’s very odd - I tend to park Parker Lane area and on the walk from there, past the bus station, under the culvert, near the ground, didn’t get anything. I’m on the 3 network if anybody has similar issues.
