Missing Foster today

Post by Uwe Noble » Sat Apr 22, 2023 6:14 pm

Wrong decision to start with Barnes. Got to give the likes of Foster, a rapidly improving player, as much game time as possible this season. He is the future.

Weird we aren't asking Obafemi to step in and play his position given his pace

Was quite disappointed he didn’t start, let alone didn’t make the bench, after his performance on Tuesday. Same for Twine.

We were missing a top striker today. Barnes has done a job for us this season but definitely the right call to release him.

Should have given Foster another game or start Obafemi. Barnes isnt offering anything. Bet Barnes starts against Blackburn though but not sure he should.

Not injured - he was out warming up and involved in drills before the game. It seems to be a regular thing for players not involved with the match day squad to still be part of the pre game activities.

Hits nail on head. The line-up today was correct. Tella would've obviously played had he been fit.

Tella is a huge loss, likely if he played today we win by 2 or 3 given all those chances we created 1st half.

Dunno if we’d have been any better, but I was just thinking that if Foster had put in the performance Barnes or Jay did today, there’d probably be yet another “Foster isn’t good enough” thread.

I'm sure this would've been the case. But Barnes and Jay have plenty of credit in the bank so to speak and have on multiple occasions performed very well after rough patches, whereas Foster is still an unknown quantity and has understandably got lots to do because it's early days.

An insightful alternative opinion to the posters view.

We’ve spent a good chunk of money of Foster, we need to give him every opportunity and there were some good signs the other night.

Love the way on this Board how the worth of a player rockets up when he is suddenly not playing, injured, dropped or suspended. From pelters one week to "how we missed him today, he would have been the difference".I suspect Foster today would not have made any difference-the guy we missed most tonight and the other two recent games was Tella.

VK has a real challenge on his hands-he needs to find a genuine goal scorer or two, as making numerous chances does not guarantee you goals or points. Three of the four sides with the lowest goals in the PL are Saints, Everton & Forest-no coincidence they are the bottom three tonight and fovourites to get relegated

We're a club still in transition with a lot more changes yet to come. Rather than be disappointed about losing the odd game, I'm excited about the level of anticipation of what's to come.

Hence why goal scorers cost a bloody fortune! We do play some lovely football but regardless of how you play, it still comes down to the basics of keeping the thing out your net whilst sticking it in theirs more often!

We were fine today and Bashley was unlucky on a couple of occasions. THBs miss was a bad one. We go again and a ball will drop in the right areas with someone there. 80% invariably wins you a game. Today was a freak and things will return to normal in the next three games

I think Jimmy Greaves had it right with his ‘it’s a funny old game’ comment. We had enough chances in the first half to win 3 games today but somehow lost?!?!

With the OP’s post in mind, I do not think Foster would have made any difference whatsoever; Tella on the other hand………..

I think that would be more effective then what we did Today. We need someone upfront alongside the main striker who has some pace

That is rather concerning if none of our present strikers are capable of making the step up to the PL.

Of that quartet I suspect Barnes and Jay won't be here next season, Foster is still raw and learning to adapt to the pace of the English game, Obafemi has shown signs to suggest he could be a useful bench option but possibly no better than that next season.

It does seem bizarre that we are hankering after a potent striker when we've netted 81 goals and are battling Boro to be the leagues top scorers.

However this season has been unique in many ways, notably the amount of players who have chipped in from all areas of the pitch, and with the best will in the world that is unlikely to be the case in the Prem.

Tella might be able to make the step up, however despite his success in the Championship he's also still unproven at the top level.

For me we need 2 strikers in the summer, Tella might be one if we can agree a deal with Saints, but who the 2nd might be I haven't a clue.

Those we've been linked with such as Gyokeres might be beyond our budget, and will likely have fellow PL clubs chasing them who can offer bigger wages.

We were missing Tella and nothing/nobody else.

Tella plays yesterday I suspect we are winning 3-0 before half time, and that’s no exaggeration. The football was superb in that period and QPR were hanging on for dear life (albeit with some superb last ditch blocks etc) but we had nobody with the killer instinct to stick it away. Benny should have scored, Barnes should have scored, THB missed an open goal, Benny hit the bar etc etc. Creation wasn’t the issue, sticking it in the net was.

No explanation from the huge drop off in intensity and urgency in the second half that I can give.

"Missing Foster today"
Which shows just how weak our striker options are
As for Obafemmi - has he ever started a game ?

I don't think Foster would have made a difference yesterday, but he needs to try and get some game time till the end of the season. I wouldn't mind seeing what Obafemi can do up top .
