Re: UK emergency-alert system…
I switched off my phone and the alerts. Switched my phone back on at 3.30 and it went off then. So much for a safe system for those who have a ‘hidden phone’ because of domestic violence etc. Which does not apply to me, in case anyone is worried

Re: UK emergency-alert system…
I forgot about it. Was in Townley talking on the phone using my hearing aids when it went off...bloody near deafened me. To be fair it was pretty much dead on 3pm.
Re: UK emergency-alert system…
Not worried about it but I can’t help wonder why they’ve spent the money on it when we get weather alerts and other alerts through news channels. I’d rather they give the money to low earners who are struggling to get by. I also don’t trust this lot to get it right first time. Already talk of how easy it is to hack and send false alerts. I wonder if the person who runs it was a local barman and friend of an MP?

I got my alert through at 1513..
Which is probably a bit late had it been a genuine emergency.
Heard on the news today too that some people, since receiving the alert, have not been able to text/ring on their phones.

I was in the keirby hotel with an amorous milf I met down the circ some years ago. Bumped into her whilst walking the dog on the canal. Anyway that stupid alert went off just as I was on the vinegar stroke. She thought it was the cops raiding the place and I thought the missus must have put a tracker on my phone and was watching my every move like some filthy porter type person. Anyway , job done I got the dog out of the wardrobe and hurriedly made my exit. I’ve learned my lesson and hope I never hear that sound again.

I'd like to take this opportunity, therefore, to mention that photo ID is required in the next elections on May 4th. It is mentioned on your polling card.Claretmisterg wrote: ↑Sun Apr 23, 2023 1:59 pmYes, really. This is the first time I have been made aware of it. I listen to the radio and watch tv regularly and have not heard or seen anything about this. I also check thevBBC news app most days and have seen nothing on there until just now.

Sounds exciting. Maybe you should arrange for a timely alert on similar occasions in the future.karatekid wrote: ↑Mon Apr 24, 2023 8:27 amI was in the keirby hotel with an amorous milf I met down the circ some years ago. It cost 5.7m for this event and 10k a day to maintain the system.

Ridiculous.
Re: UK emergency-alert system…
So...sat in garden...alert tells me gun man on loose nearby....take family inside house, lock all doors etc.......more chance of survival than sunning myself in garden oblivious to what's going on
Re: UK emergency-alert system…
Yeah but at least you got an alert from our caring sharing government

I'm with you, I first heard about it yesterday just before 3pm. I have been away and haven't been watching the news nor do I buy newspapers.Claretmisterg wrote: ↑Sun Apr 23, 2023 1:59 pmYes, really. Nothing on my Social stuff either.
Re: UK emergency-alert system…
Do you think you'll hear the government alert before you hear the gunfire and screams?
Re: UK emergency-alert system…
Don't know, depends how close they are when the alert went off......the more information the better..unles you risk your life just to be anti government, good luck in that case

Re: UK emergency-alert system…
Coincidentally I was hiding from a gunman when the test alarm sounded. In all the panic I lost track of time and had forgotten to switch my phone to silent. I’m now dead.

Re: UK emergency-alert system…
Thank you. My luck has held so far in that I have never been shot by a mad gunman but I don't know if luck like that can possibly hold. I wonder if any other board member has been as lucky? Live life on the edge, that's me. Sitting in my own garden without an emergency alert - the risks are unimaginable. They don't call me "devil-may-care dsr" for nothing.

American company who've set up other systems are the ones in charge of it, they've done similar for other countries.AmbleClaret wrote: ↑Tue Apr 25, 2023 8:59 amAnd the company responsible for managing the system is linked to ????? Quelle surprise, none other than the Prime Minister's wife.
No connection to Infosys, which is the company linked to PM's wife and I've yet to see anyone provide a credible link to it either.
Feel free to provide one though

Cartoon in today's Daily Telegraph - two unicorns watching the ark sail away. "I didn't get an alert - did you?"

Re: UK emergency-alert system…
I know your scenario is far fetched but how big an area do you think you will get notified?
I think armed police respond to around 10 incidents a day in Manchester and Liverpool similar. Are you expecting an alert everytime?
Could it have helped the incident in Marks and Spencer the other year?

Re: UK emergency-alert system…
If John Cleese were ever to decide to give Monty Python another go, he would get rich inspiration from this board!
It's mainly to alert of storms, flooding etc that they can predict with a bit of notice. They were testing the system and some stuff didn't work as expected. That's why they test, so they can fix issues before the system is actually needed.

Re: UK emergency-alert system…
Very rarely I guess.....it is used in other countries where the instances are more frequent, I don't think it would get used much anyway in this country, and would need much more work on it to get down to local warningsQuickenthetempo wrote: ↑Tue Apr 25, 2023 10:18 amI know your scenario is far fetched but how big an area do you think you will get notified?

Yes it's very far fetched, but it was in response to the silly comment made that someone turned off the alert because they don't trust the government

Re: UK emergency-alert system…
I suspect the system will be used more for terrorist attacks than normal day to day criminals (maybe also for extreme weather events )Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Tue Apr 25, 2023 10:18 amI know your scenario is far fetched but how big an area do you think you will get notified?

The mancs and scousers both have less than 900 operations a year involving Armed Officers.
