I think it's safe to say Maatsen is not coming

At least we got another excellent player in our squad. Tresor and Maatsen on loan... Still waiting for the big fish to bite and see who we manage to buy in the end.
Have we actually completed the Tresor deal yet?

Think we should have sorted the LB position early in pre season as with CM. These were the two clear positions that needed strengthening. We shouldn’t be left to be held to ransom on deadline day.

Daily Mail now saying Maatsen fee is £13.5 million.

A bit of sanity at last.
So Chelsea now want less money for maatsen when they said he wouldn't move for less than 20m

Well if its £13.5m and not £31.5m then that is sensible for us to get personal terms agreed sharpish and shouldn't be a problem unless its something else that is the problem.

I hoped Maatsen would return, but if he doesn;t want to be here then I'd just rather we moved on quickly. A real shame it's been dragged out this long.

He wants to prove himself at Chelsea, it a football decision for him, but that said, when clubs agree a fee, it usually means that your club is happy for you to move on which is both football decision and a business decision.

What ever the price is I can't see a season long loan, he's refused a contract extension at Chelsea so at the end of this season (after a loan) he becomes a free agent

There will be add-ons, the deal will be no where near the reported £31.5 million
Initial fee could be around £13m - £18m with the potential to rise with performance based add-ons. £2/3 million avoiding relegation.. future £5 million if we got into Europe, maybe £1 million if Maatsen was part of a team that kept X amount of cleansheets or got X amount of assists.

All hypothetical, but I'd imagine it would be a deal set out something along those lines.

what if the breakdown is 5 million loan fee, 20 million over 4 years plus the rest in add ons based on PL appearances, avoiding relegation and qualifying for Europe with 4 years - that makes it much more affordable. Just need to persuade him
It’s like shopping with littlewoods catalogue,I’m still paying £2.52 a week for some trainers I bought ten year ago! The interest is incredible!

Just bizarre all round really. Ready to break our transfer record on him, after spending a year working with him/building trust, for him to not be interested in a move. Whatever his reasons are I think it’s a bit of a poor do from him.

See what the day brings, but I can't see him joining today either.
He will probably stay and see how he gets on at Chelsea, then if he doesn't break into the side regularly enough in the next few months.. MAYBE we will get him in January, hopefully for cheaper ;)

You don't pay £31 million for an inexperienced full back either. I'm sure the fee will be a lot nearer £13.5 mil than £31mil.

Either way, we'll probably never know as it will be "An undisclosed fee " if it happens at all.

Unless Maatsen has only today decided he’s not keen on the move, it’s on the club this one and not the player.

There's a few people need to read Dandeclaret's post a page or two back. Don't get suckered into the media narrative.

As Roman Roy says about the US election, this is just about making a day long entertainment programme to the journos. There's a kernel of truth in the stories, but there's a lot of spin and gilding the lily.

Standard suggesting Maatsen was more open to a move to West Ham. Reading between the lines he thinks he’s above us now after these Chelsea appearances.

£31m is a hell of a lot of money, but there seems to be a real lack of really good LB around. Look at Man Utd, they've been looking for a replacement for Shaw and not really un earthed any real talent. If Man Utd can't get a good LB in that says something. So while 31M is one real outlay could certainly see it paying off in the long run.

We've had many a long transfer deadline days, especially in recent years under Dyche and no budget.

Give Taylor a crack at it for 6 months. If Maatsen was preferring a move to West Ham (if true) and wants to remain at Chelsea, everything is pointing towards him not wanting to be here. I think Taylor would be fine dropping into a back three and at left back, especially as we can use his experience.

Maatsen probably thinks someone else will come in for him in January and he will get more money and play for a "bigger" team. He should understand Chelsea DO NOT WANT HIM and he is not considered a LB and his potential midfield position puts him in competition with a lot of players who are rated far more highly than him. Hopefully common sense will prevail and a combination of VK and Poch telling him that will make him come to us. Where would Maatsen have been in his career if he hadn't been with us last season, I bet he will have been sold off cheap or out as a free agent next year and not with the reputation he has now aquired.

Definitely time to move on, his heart is clearly not on the move (seem Chelsea want it more than him)
We don't want a player here regretting the decision to come, and wondering what could have been.

Let him stay at Chelsea, see what happens and if it doesn't work out go back in for him in January.. bring him in with a clear mind.

The premier league isn't really the place to "give someone a crack". VK clearly isn't keen on Taylor, even if he was having no back up there is a bit daft.

It's suprising that Maatsen's preferences would be news to us by now, hopefully we're already trying other left backs. We've signed some exciting players this summer, but we've potentially dropped a big boll*k here

I think Taylor would be fine dropping into a back three and at left back, especially as we can use his experience.
I wouldn't mind seeing Taylor at left back, he's proven at left back in the Premier League.. did a very decent job for us there.
He would have alot of rust to shake off though, not played in that position (or any position really regularly the past season) so would take time to get back up to speed of the PL.. but he's still only 29 iirc.

Some people spend far too much time listening to media reports and worrying about them
