Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge Maatsen fan. I enjoy his speed to the ball and I'm a fan of his close control and how he progresses the ball.

However, although clearly improving, he still has much to learn on the defensive side of his game.

I'm amazed we've offered £15m for him - but then again I don't know the detail - so add ons could make up quite a bit. If the offer has gone in, then I assume the player's demands have been met, so I guess its just a matter of time. Hope so.

An unfortunate and tedious by-product of being back in the Prem is finding it harder to ignore the amount of brainless, glory hunting "fans" who don't actually watch football but get all their knowledge from FIFA cards and people on YouTube who can't string a sentence together. I call it the "Thogden-ification of football."

Maybe I'm getting old.

If the figures being quoted are remotely accurate, firstly for Beyer and now for Maatsen, it looks as though we are going to be spending some pretty significant sums, this summer, if this is what we are prepared to do with the defence.

We certainly need reinforcements in midfield, up front and out wide, areas that will, unless we have some more hidden gems to unearth, cost even bigger amounts.

I wonder how all of this is going to be funded. Key thing perhaps is that we can turn a significant profit on many of the signings from last year and this.

Anyone else feeling quite calm about the upcoming window?

If we don't get Maatsen it'll probably be because we aren't willing to pay what Chelsea want. And then Kompany and his team will move on to the next one and, you'd expect, a quick and forthright offer to be made.

Everything feels much more aligned, purposeful and determined.

No faffing around or panicking with an eggs in one basket approach.

We've seen and lauded Kompany's immense tactical nous, but the way the club operates in the market has been transformed to unrecognisable degrees with Kompany no doubt playing an enormous part in that.

With BPF off to Sheff Wed...looks like Verbruggen is on his way to the Turf, together with Tresor, Tella, Maatsen, Clarke are the most realistic ones only IMO.

Chelsea will be trying their hardest to get as much money back as possible early on in the window but ultimately they need to reduce that squad size massively, as the weeks pass in the window they may be forced to sell cheaper

Suggestion they want 15m so I’m struggling with that one.

Think getting Tresor for the same price, if not less, would be the better option.

Oh I dunno. But I said elsewhere that Tresor would be a great signing. A bit flummoxed how we seem to be front of the queue perhaps. Sort of player the YouTube and Twitter boys would like. Football Manager wonderkid type.

Ah…it may well be a PL thing. Rob Dickie has signed for Bristol City from QPR today which made me think the domestic market was reopened 1st June.

From today’s Athletic article:

“Burnley are open to bringing Maatsen back either permanently or on loan but would prefer the former.

Chelsea value the player above £20million but Burnley are reluctant to meet that asking price. Their most recent offer of £15million including add-ons has been turned down by Chelsea, rising up from their initial valuation of around £12million. There is a feeling that a compromise can be reached somewhere in the middle, but Chelsea have not ruled out keeping him.

There is plenty of business that Burnley want (and need) to do this summer. Therefore, it is unlikely they will go to £20million or above on any single player this summer unless they are viewed as a game changer.”

Plenty in The Athletic article about both Maatsen and Tella but a loan for either (said to be Maatsen’s preferred option if too many players are ahead of him) is useless for us - we won’t be fighting for 17th/18th next season and young players like that have to be an asset to sell higher later. This is about building not surviving. The two domestic loans need to be for experience and high quality combined.

I would go for Sergio Gomez instead if that becomes the option. Plenty of experience in La Liga and the Premier League at not much older and has spent a year under Kompany and plays a similar system at City.

Personally think 15m is a very fair offer for Maatsen and one I thought Chelsea might deal at, with some sort of buy back included. Obviously the 15m sounds like it includes add ons so maybe just need to re-work the structure of the deal.

Totally agree, it also disgusts me how Maatsen is a product of their secondary business of hovering up dozens of young kids send them out on loan with a view to selling them at big profits,do little to develop them themselves, ie leave it to VK,with only the odd one making a first team appearance. Totally scandalous that clubs allowed to do this although I understand they have since been fined and there is a reduction on the numbers of kids they can sign , but they are still the parasites of football.

15mil will probs be the most we will go to for any player this summer, 4 signings at 15mil would take spend to 60mil + Beyer then we have loan market to use and free agents

15mil wouldn’t seem so high for Maatsen if he had 2 years left on his desk at Chelsea

£20M sounds an awful lot for IM, though that'll depend on what the 'pay-now' figure is as opposed to the proportion which is deferred/achievement based; my understanding is that Maatsen is starting the final year of his contract, so if Chelsea don't sell him this summer they're unlikely to get any more for him going forward.

£15 Million for Maatsen is what is 100% wrong with buying players from English clubs, no top league experience, one decent season under his belt in a brilliant team with us and a year left on his contract, not a great defender but decent going forward yet they want around 20 Million 😂 😂, we need to look abroad

They are having our pants down if we pay anywhere near 15 million.
He might prove to be as good as we hope, BUT it's a big gamble. Clubs with Burnleys finances, cannot afford to make 15 mil gambles.
I'd rather take a 5 mil gamble on some unknown from Europe.

A few of the £5m or less unkowns we got from Europe last season didn't do too badly for us

Maatsen to stay at Chelski!
Article in today's London Standard:
According to the Evening Standard, the Blues are keen to raise at least £20m from the sale of Maatsen and that comes as no shock considering how talented he is.

But it remains to be seen whether the Premier League giants sanction an exit regardless of whether their valuation is met - because the future of Marc Cucurella is currently uncertain and that could force the Dutchman to stay at Stamford Bridge as a squad option.

Not a chance at 20 million, I'd rather go for this lad, Faitout Maouassa for way less than half the price of Maatsen

Maatsen is a good player but not worth £20m. Defensively he needs to improve but great going forward. Think there will be better value abroad and doubt we’ve pinned our hopes on one player as we’ve done previously.

Maatsen £20m vs Sergio Gomez £10m

If there's any truth in the Gomez rumours I know which I'd choose.

Don’t knock Chelsea for their business around young players, I was lucky enough to sit next to a Man City coach when I was flying over for a game & he said himself & most people in football totally agree with it. The players they sign get the best coaching, education & if they don’t meet the Chelsea grade they are sold or let go but Chelsea go to great lengths to make sure it’s the right club.

Trippier must have been crap then because he got relegated from the PL.

To suggest Maatsen didn't have a decent season at Coventry because they didn't finish higher is pure nonsense.

It's ********.
Chelsea are in a buyers market. They have surplus players to requirement. They also need to offload on top of that, so that Poch can bring in his own men. IM has only 1 year left on his contract, and can leave for FREE, in 12 months.
Chelsea can afford to right the loss off, but they aren't in a position to dictate terms.

I'd love to sign Maats, but we have to be realistic.

Not a chance at 20 million, I'd rather go for this lad, Faitout Maouassa for way less than half the price of Maatsen
Have concluded my YouTube scouting and have concur :D

Trippier must have been crap then because he got relegated from the PL.

To suggest Maatsen didn't have a decent season at Coventry because they didn't finish higher is pure nonsense.
Okay

So imagine we spend 40m on Tella and Maatsen... Doesn't feel like we'd have much left to spend. Maybe 20m?

Agree it would feel like a massive chunk of the budget gone with a number of positions still to fill

A lot of the stories come from the Burnley boys account....had to remove posts previously because they were wrong....pinch of salt unless linked to a proper report

It looks from the outside looking in that we're going to speculate to accumulate. I think we have a sound business plan with the right chairman and right manager. Let's say we spend £100 million. I think they will be confident of making a profit on that in future sales. It'll take more loans for sure, but they will be confident.
