Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Excellent article today in the Athletic summarising the summer window. Andy shares a few ‘inside’ details on a few things. Very interesting on Tella, Saints were initially ready to do a deal at 8-10m but then not long after the valuation changed to 18-20m. Burnley made a final offer of 14m which was turned down. Annoyance within the Burnley camp that Saints were charging on the value we had created for them.

It's only annoying as a Burnley fan, Saints fans must be delighted that we made that much for them, and if we were Saints fans we'd be happy too.RVclaret wrote: ↑Thu Sep 07, 2023 9:39 amExcellent article today in the Athletic summarising the summer window. Mind they might want him back if they repeat the SOL disaster.

I thought that this summed up our squad depth, or lack of itRVclaret wrote: ↑Thu Sep 07, 2023 9:39 amExcellent article today in the Athletic summarising the summer window. Players like Brunn Larsen on loan/Koleosho for cheap is a no brainer like as rotation / pushing to start on the wings.
Would have had two for each space out wide, with coverage from Guddy and additional coverage of one of Ramsey/Tresor if needs be.
When it’s depicted like that in front of you it really does show just how lopsided our squad is.
Hoping Massengo is a good one - we desperately need him to be!

If we're really annoyed that Southampton wanted us to pay extra for Tella due to value we created it's naive beyond belief.
The squad depth graphic looks to have been made to deliberately make it look shallow I think. Some (most) of the players can play more than one position on it.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Cullen as defensive midfield and Gudmondsson as central midfield would look better. And the distinction between left centre back and right centre back is a bit bogus, because most centre backs can do either with little drop-off.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
The Athletic article suggests bad blood between Burnley and Southampton hence the hashtag thing. We must have felt they were trying it on.
The Maatsen one sounds like an error, if we had gone above £20m initially we would have got him, before he changed his mind, we bid over that by the end so should have done it early.
The Korean is a surprise, I don’t recall that rumour coming out. Origi always sounded fanciful, probably the agent throwing our name in after our mild interest to keep Forest thinking big wage numbers.
I expect up to 6 sales in January.

Our reveals continue to attract positive attention...
"So what do the Teletubbies, the Inbetweeners and Back to the Future have in common?
Yep, they've all been used in these carefully crafted videos by Burnley - who are widely considered the GOATs in this space."

That's only if you see it with this set up. Obviously our management isn't planning on playing with upcoming fullbacks and they had a good reason not to focus on these positions.claretandy wrote: ↑Thu Sep 07, 2023 10:13 amI thought that this summed up our squad depth, or lack of it
Personally I think we had a great transfer window with Delcroix Berge and Tresor some established players from the Belgian league. Berge was once seen as the best midfielder, very complete player with an impressive physicality and vision of the game. Great passing, can score from a distance. Wins headers. Intelligent guy as well.
Tresor goes without saying. Technically flawless player basically. Top transfer for Burnley as is Amdouni. Also Trafford is a player a recently promoted Burnley shouldn't be able to get after his performance at the EC u21.
Delcroix for his price is a steal. Having had some injuries and Vertonghen playing on his position he hasn't had the best season last year, but he's actually a player for the national team. A top talent that under different circumstances wouldn't be coming to Burnley.
Koleosho was brought in for the future with no expectations. Proving himself to be a great transfer so far combining speed skill and work rate. He does his job and can easily pass a player. A steal.
Odobert seems to be a bright talent. French Youth international. Actually also a player that normally wouldn't come to Burnley if it wasn't for Vinnie.
O'Shea Redmond decent players, Redmond was free and worth about 10m on transfermarkt.
Ramsey a bright young talent ready to make his break through bought at just the right time probably. Massengo also very promising.
Bruun Larsen a good squad player that can be used on multiple positions.
Obafemi and Beyer bought also good transfers.
Not one name than we signed is a bad player. Even Vigouroux and Larsen are more than decent.
Up to the coaching staff to make a team out of it and play the set up they had in mind. No doubt these players will keep improving and they all are intelligent lads that pick up things easily. Most of them can be sold with a profit later on. Well done on that part.
Next games look doable for Burnley. On to the next.

We could have signed a top quality left back...but I can see why we didn't at £120k pw.

How come we weren't linked to this kid in the summer? I'm surprised.

Been naming him a few times before. I guess he's too expensive for us. Being on the list of all the top clubs as the next KDB prodigy. Besides a good technique this guy has an impeccable work rate, great vision of the game. He plays as if he's been there forever but he's only 18... He's playing as an 8 or a 6. Would be an amazing signing for Burnley the in the line of Tresor and Bakayoko. For me together with Romeo Lavia the biggest midfield talent from Belgium.burnley007 wrote: ↑Wed Sep 20, 2023 12:40 pmhttps://www.90min.com/posts/royal-antwe ... -successor

We did offer up to 5 million euros for Kristian Arnstad, don't think I've seen any mention of that. Anderlecht refused to sell him. Quoted by VK as the youngster who would have the biggest career out of the whole squad 2 years ago. Good player bit comparable to Berge but smaller and more technical. Also can play anywhere at midfield.

How are there so many top young talents in Belguim? Is there something going on, or is it just a good period?Anthonini wrote: ↑Wed Sep 20, 2023 12:57 pmBeen naming him a few times before. I think the perception is that other countries are overflowing with more talent than we are, but I don't think it's true. They're definitely cheaper and the foreign leagues have a more cultured approach to youth recruitment and development, but I don't think Belguim are churning out more talented players than anyone else. It's more likely that it's just a market that hasn't been overly shopped in yet.burnley007 wrote: ↑Wed Sep 20, 2023 1:13 pmHow are there so many top young talents in Belguim? The prices in Belgium are much more reasonable because clubs are smaller and need the money more.boyyanno wrote: ↑Wed Sep 20, 2023 1:21 pmI think the perception is that other countries are overflowing with more talent than we are, but I don't think it's true. The level is lower it's more like the Championship with a bit more physicality and European influences. Many clubs give playing time to homegrown talents and try to sell them with big profit.
The Belgian competition is like a display window for young talents. Players come and go and clubs have to let their best players go to bigger competitions. Similar to Portugal and the Dutch league.
Then there are the excellent youth academies of mostly Genk Anderlecht and Standard Liège. Recent years Club Brugge and Antwerp are doing more to get their academies to top level. Vermeeren being a product of Antwerp and also one of the first since their comeback at first league some 4 years ago. They've been mostly buying players up till now.

It's a good league to step over to the Premier League due to a pretty high tempo and physical high pressing teams. Players don't get as much time on the ball as let's say the Dutch League where they defend totally different. We often saw bang average strikers leave to the Dutch League to become highest scorers in the league. For example Tresor went to the Dutch league to break through because he wasn't strong enough for the Belgian league physically at that time. The Dutch League emphasizes more on technique and offensive tactics. More lightweight players get more opportunities. They play even more youth as well. They have even better academies.
Do think the Belgian lads in combination with the Congolese influence as a remainder of the colonial period are a bit more physical. Think of Kompany Lukaku Vandenborre Lukebakio Doku Lavia and I believe Moussa Dembele. Also the Moroccan invasion brought some pretty good ballers like Fellaini Chadli Zaroury etcetera.
Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
It's also just a good period yes. Last years weren't that great for Belgian talents. There was a gap after the good generation with hazard Kompany Witsel Fellaini etc...burnley007 wrote: ↑Wed Sep 20, 2023 1:13 pmHow are there so many top young talents in Belguim? Dendoncker Denayer Tielemans Faes and those guys never really reached top level same as the previous lads did who were captains at top teams and star players there.
Some wasted talents like Charlie Musonda Zakaria Bakkali Januzaj who should have done way more in their career.
Looks like the young ones the likes of Doku Lavia Bakayoko Debast and Vermeeren will get further but that's just speculation. There's also Tresor Lokonga Orel Mangala, Onana from Everton. Seems to be a more complete team with decent subtop players this generation whereas the one from 3 years ago had some star players but never had a good left back for example so there was always some shuffling around and making it work without or putting players like Vertonghen or Chadli or Thorgan hazard there. There's also a good young keeper at Genk on loan from RB Leipzig Maarten Vandevoordt. The only thing I think is lacking is a top striker. Openda is pretty good, Ramazani promising. Anyway enough decent players on the way at this moment.

Sacha Boey that we were extensively linked with in the Summer had a great game against United.
Wondering if we go down that avenue once again.

Need a better right back to push Roberts and for the love of god a starting holding midfielder or two.
